When December 2012 finally rolls round, it will be the end of all the 2012 nonsense.
Every year the Gregorian calendar ends, does the world implode?
Just because the Mayan calendar ends the cycle on that day does not mean the world ends. No, the Maya were not tired of working that particular day. See, the Mayans had a numerical system based on twenty. (We have one based on ten) The benefit of this was that the Maya were able to make complex calculations that allowed them to develop astronomical sciences. As they became more and more proficent, they ordered their measurement of time by particular astronomical cycles. They were able to guesstimate with a great deal of reliablity, changes in seasons, due to superb record keeping and uberleet mathematical skills.
The calenders end because the culture went into decline, and it's people eventually merged with other mesoamerican cultures.
You can believe what some uneducated hollywood self help guru says, or you can actually go research meso american civilizations for yourself.
