Do you believe in 2012?

Post » Sat Dec 25, 2010 5:59 pm

I was watching a program last night about the "end of the world" and I'm interested in knowing what you think.
Now I don't know if there another thread like this but I couldn't find one.

I myself don't really believe it.

I'm old enough to have heard "the end of the world is nigh" more times than I care to remember. Every one of those predictions was wrong (unless I just didn't notice) so I see no reason to think this latest one will be any different.

No. The world will eventually end no doubt but why must it be on the 21st December of 2012?! Prophecies also said the world would end in 2000 and we're still here...unless this is the Matrix :ninja:

No... and I doubt the Mayans, from whom this so-called prophecy supposedly originated, did, either.

There's nothing to believe. It's all fear-mongering spawned from a misunderstanding.

I really think some Mayan sculptors were just part way through etching their calendar into stone, decided to quit work and go home early one day, and woke up to see some weird guys in armor riding horses in the morning.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Yes, I believe that it will occur next year, at the end of 2011.

I personally haven't seen any evidence at all to support a predicted 2012 apocalypse that hasn't been debunked by science or proven to be a misrepresentation or "enthusiastic reinterpretation" (read: twisting into bold-faced lies) of the source material. I see it as an opportunity for some unscrupulous people to capitalize on book and TV deals at the expense of others. Remember the "Y2K Disaster?" No? Yeah...

You know what I think? I think either:

A. The Mayans ran out of room on the rock the calendar was on, and it just so happened to end on 2012. Or...

B. They eventually said "whats wrong with a yearly calendar?" and gave up the project on 2012.

No. There is no 2012. Count the numbers up, they go as 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, 2013, 2014, and so on. There is no 2012.

No, I don't believe the world will end in 2012.

That being said, it will be interesting living during the months/weeks/days up to the 21st, because whether you believe it you have to acknowledge its the next "big" doomsday theory, like y2k and possibly more so the 2012 theory is mainstream and in the minds of a lot of people around the world. With the latest disasters happening around the world being blown up by the media, the height of awareness/uneasiness is growing.

Massive supply sales boom in the future?

When December 2012 finally rolls round, it will be the end of all the 2012 nonsense.
Every year the Gregorian calendar ends, does the world implode?
Just because the Mayan calendar ends the cycle on that day does not mean the world ends. No, the Maya were not tired of working that particular day. See, the Mayans had a numerical system based on twenty. (We have one based on ten) The benefit of this was that the Maya were able to make complex calculations that allowed them to develop astronomical sciences. As they became more and more proficent, they ordered their measurement of time by particular astronomical cycles. They were able to guesstimate with a great deal of reliablity, changes in seasons, due to superb record keeping and uberleet mathematical skills.
The calenders end because the culture went into decline, and it's people eventually merged with other mesoamerican cultures.

You can believe what some uneducated hollywood self help guru says, or you can actually go research meso american civilizations for yourself.

Oh yes. I believe in it.

And my neighbor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nhgfjrKi0o

In other words,

Hell no, That crap is bull. They said it would end every year during the cold war. Last time I checked, the Soviet Union is gone. So, unless Mars collides with Chuck Norris, I doubt the world will end.

Look at it this way, if thee world did end in 2012, would we really be at a disadvantage for not believing it?

The whole Mayan calendar thing is total BS. However if the world does happen to end in a cataclysmic event in the year 2012, I'm man enough to admit I was wrong.
