If you can't block while being a spell/sword....

Can you block while dual wielding? I certainly hope so!

EDIT: According to this information you can't

* Players will be unable to block attacks if they are wielding a weapon in one hand and a spell in the other. Only players who wield two handed weapons or a sword and shield can perform blocks.

- You cannot block if you have a sword in one hand, and a spell in another. Only players wielding two-handed blades or sword and shield can use block.

Perhaps they'll have some combat dodge/roll for the weapon set ups you can't block with.

I can see what you're saying but I would imagine it's not just right trigger = attack and left = block. Therefore if you have a spell equipped it would just be used instraad of blocking.

They'll probably incorporate left bumper as spell for example so you can still use left trigger to block with your weapon

Not sure about blocking with dual 1h weapons, but for 1h weapon/spell I'm sure there will be a "shield" spell. It may or may not act like it did in previous games. Maybe it'll be like previous games and just be like a magical armor(where you can sit and be a tank) or maybe it'll be a more dynamic spell that you cast that places a wall, that once it takes enough damage will break(to buy time to get a safe distance, or trap an enemy to barrage him/her with spells) Or even something better. I hope something new and cool is done with the spell, to add character to mage battles.

Perhaps it means while in the process of casting a spell you cannot block, which is exactly how it currently is in Oblivion.

You cannot hit the block button while casting...

I don't see how a hand can be permanently occupied by a spell, when spells are pretty much cast instantly.

I believe Todd Howard said specifically in the magazine that you cannot block at all while magic is in one hand, and a weapon in the other.

Thank you! That's what I've been saying since this whole blocking debacle started. You should be able to block while dual wielding by simply crossing your swords.

Although, I hope this doesn't exclude blocking when only wielding a one-handed weapon and nothing else. I'm sure you can.

Perhaps the terminology used by the magazine editors is incorrect.

It would not make sense for a spell, which is cast instantly, to make constant use of a hand. Maybe they are referring to enchantments, ie while you are maintaining some sort of enchantment such as a magical barrier you cannot block.

I think they are going with the idea that spells have to be primed and ready to go for it to be cast, instead of just 'oh hey, I will just cast this instantly at any given moment without any planning for forethought

and why block when you could just paralyze, mind control, pacify, go invisible, or conjure a meat shield (minion) to avoid being hit

Very interesting question. I would think that if you had at least one weapon equipped you could block. And if you're dual-wielding, it makes sense that you would be able to block with one weapon and strike with the other at the same time. However, if you are a pure-mage and have two spells equipped I don't think you would be able to block with your arms. That'd hurt. A lot. But that makes sense because mages like that shouldn't really be fighting in close combat anyways.

That makes even less sense than not blocking while holding a weapon and a spell.

Surely dual wielding will make blocking even easier than blocking with one weapon.

Not being able to block with just one sword and magic/emptyhand seems just weird.

Doesn't worry me too much if you can't block with sword/magic or dual swords, someone will no doubt make a mod to fix it.

Don't fix what's not broken. Seriously we have no clue and we have not played the game give it a chance before bashing it.

...maybe we can parry by swinging at the oponent's sword?

thw would be cool.

edit: if there are directionnal attacks, meybe even swinging egainst the oponen'ts blow would create a block.

makes more sense that stopping a two handed mace by putting your katana in front of it...
