You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hands!

Greetings wastelanders,

I've had a hell of a good time in Fallout 4 so far. I like pretty much everything with the exception of the horrible PC interface, but I've adapted and learned to live with it.

Now after almost 100 hours something struck me, having recently played Fallout- New Vegas.

Where are the guns?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the gun modification implementation. I love to nerd and twink with the guns, but it struck me. Did everybody seeing the nuclear detonations of 2077, run to the sea and throw all the firepower away into the abyss?

I realized that there is only ONE (1) "assault rifle" in the game and the ONLY weapon to boot that used the 5.56 mm ammo. And to be honest it's not an assault rifle, it's a WW1'ish Vickers machinegun. We have ONE (1) "Combat rifle" based loosely on the B.A.R, and TWO (2) shotguns?!? A single hunting rifle with the possibility of rechambering it. Don't even get me started on the two handguns and the one single SMG in the game. Somehow the tommygun got preserved for 300+ years but not a single UZI, Mac-10, UMP 45, MP5 or anything did?

Where are the guns?

A bit disappointed playing for so long and having to look it up on the instawebz if any more guns would come along and realizing I've found almost everything there is to shoot with very early in the game :/

I realize that Bethesda will enjoy the lucrative inevitable DLC, but seeing how much detail that has gone into this game it's a bit disappointing to be honest.

/rant over

To be fair, you can modify the guns to look like a completely different gun entirely. You can make a combat rifle or hunting rifle into an AMR for example.

Hmmm, I think its either because of licensing or Beth will add more in patches or DLC.

I think the variety of base weapons was traded for a variety of incredibly modular weapons. I think it was a good trade off, to be honest. :)

Since none of the those guns are canon to the Fallout universe I'm not surprised by their absence.......I'm more surprised by the lack of the chinese assault rifle or the american assault rifle, or indeed by the lack of many other fallout 3 weapons.

But in the end I'd much rather have the ability to mod a rifle up a sniper rifle or an assault rifle as my personal choice.

Meh I prefer quality over quantity, fewer guns, but each feel more distinct and serve a more distinct role.

Retconing, they obviously wanted to give the franchise more original gun designs, so for example the assault rifle in this game IS the American assault rifle.

Hehe. Yeah, part of this is J.E. Sawyer's sort of OCD obsession with guns and ammo type and damage modifiers. And part of it is Obsidian chose certain things that the original games focused on and determined that they'd focus on those things as well. Bethesda obviously have (and have had) different priorities.

Agree with OP. The least I would've expected was a reunion with the old FO1, 2, and 3 weapons that are canon to the series. Much disappoint =/

Speaking of "canon", Fallout 2 had 223 pistol, .44 magnum, Desert Eagle, 9mm Mauser, 10mm pistol, 14mm Pistol, Needler pistol, Gauss Pistol and the Zip gun, just in conventional Handguns!!

I do understand where you're coming from, Modding is absolutely fantastic as I also mentioned in my post. But 2-3, hell maybe even 10 different bases for assault rifles with parts like the grip being universally interchangeable could have been a middle of the road solution? I don't know. It was a rant :)

Well its original in the sense that nobody ever made an assault rifle like it........actually I think if it was more like the other weapons and you could replace the barrel (that looks like a WW1 water cooled barrel) with an assortment of air cooled types then I wouldn't dislike it so much and who makes an assault rifle that doesn't take a bayonet. That for me was the last straw and I ditched it in favor of a maxed out automatic combat rifle when I have a need for an assault rifle (which is a all round better weapon as well).

+1

Small base variety with large crafting variety makes me very happy, indeed.

I'm very sure that most of the FO 3 and FO:NV weapons will be modded into the game shortly after the modding tools are introduced.

And of course, they'll be fully moddable.

I'd have liked the option to mod the chinese assault rifle, or the american assault rifle, or the sniper rifle, or the SMG, or the etc..........

I'd certainly like more options, but then who wouldn't like more base options and I wish they had used those existing designs in F4, but I can live with what we got, at least until the add more in DLCs and of course the fan mods.

They could still let you have the ability to mod weapons while at the same time having a little more diverse range of weapons, I gotta agree with the op, it seems like I don't even wanna check dead bodies for weapons because I know it's just gonna be one that I already have

There are fewer guns because modifications to weapons make having many different guns redundant. If they allowed a mod to put a stock on the 10mm, it would either convert to a "rifle" or more accurately represent an UZI. Mind... I think having a base gun that can go rifle/pistol/automatic for each ammo type is a good thing, and certainly, the only thing that uses 10mm rounds is a pistol. I was certainly disappointed I couldn't convert it into a rifle anyway.

However weapons like the UZI, Mp5, etc? They never existed. You have to remember... the Fallout universe was stuck in the 1930's-1940's for over 100 years. The universe sports helicopters, laser guns, pre-war robots with ridiculously sophisticated A.I. and the most recent addition before the end of the world, power armor. Meanwhile, our characters have a black and white 13" TV in their living room and computers run on a vaguely recognizable version of DOS. Bethesda is REALLY stretching the reality of the Fallout universe here on technological advancement alone. Maybe if it were the 1960's when the bombs fell...

Judging from everything I've seen, they've gone with a few "base models" and left everything else up to modding. I think it's fine for the most part, though I wish there were unique mods you could only find by scouring the wastes along with unique weapons. For example, a mod like "incendiary rounds" that you could use to give any of your guns, pistol or rifle, extra burning damage, but you'd have to choose which weapon to use it on and it would replace another mod.

I'd also like to see a better variety of non-magnifying scopes for pistols and energy weapons. All the higher levels sights are scopes that basically turn your pistol into a sniper rifle, so I find myself using basic reflex sights for the most part, so I'm not constantly having to hold my breath to fire a basic pistol because they have so much sway. Just seems like a waste of potential for higher level mods.

I don't mind the decision to trade weapon types for more modification, but damn they could have tossed in more visual variety for the AR and other weapons.

I don't like the look of the assault rifle and I agree there could be a few more base weapon types. However, over all I feel that the highly modifiable weapons we have now are far superior to anything we had before.

I'm missing the Chinese Assault Rifle, and the (previous) regular Assault Rifle, for that matter.

I understand that the more guns that are put in, the more shapes they have and the more difficult it becomes to make modifications work. But I do wish they had included more of the canonic weapons.

Legendaries drop stuff like this. I just picked up a fully automatic 10mm that does frost damage and a low %chance to freeze enemies. I then pulled the mods off of my other auto 10mm and put them on this one, then scrapped the old one. And life is good.

that's because it IS a hunting rifle w/ .50 cal reciever. open it up in the weapon workbench and see for yourself.

I love the gun system btw and besides more base weapons will be added through dlc so no worries.

The R91 from Fallout 3 is a 5.56x45mm MP5 (HK33). Both are roller-delayed blowback firearms, made in reality by H&K and certain licensed public and private-owned arms firms. I've actually got a semi-auto version of the R91 in my safe at home. It's kind of a stretch to say that the MP5 couldn't exist in Fallout canon given it's relation was all over the Capital Wasteland.

Played some more, read through the posts here and decided my rant has come up with some things for me to think about.

I love the tinkering and wouldn't wish Fallout 4 without it, but I think I've found out why I had to rant. AllTrickNoTreats said it earlier; You come to a point early in the game where you simple won't get surprised anymore. "Woow, that was a tough fight, I wonder what version of the single assault rifle THIS supermutant had?!".

You get to a point way too early in the game, where the surprises and wonderment seizes. I'm annoyed by it because I love the new system. Love/hate relationship I guess :/

(PLEASE modders/Bethesda; All I want' for Christmas is a lever action gun and a revolver of some kind :D)

Thanks for all your constructive replies, all posted in good manner and no trolling!
