If you could bring back one feature from a previous game

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:14 pm

I always wished some of the features from the previous games could have been used in Oblivion (I mean come on, no spears?).

What are your Ideas on some of the things that should be brought back from earlier games?
Things that you miss?

Throwing stuff, like darts and stars, i like stuff like that, however like bows it never was very effective imo, if they could make it more effective they should defintally bring it back :P also crossbows :) basically all the weapons they took out between tes 3 and tes 4

I want Daggerfall's leveling system, minus the 4-6 points part. I want that part replaced with just one number. I hate the system they introduced in Morrowind.

Absolutly agree. I also thought that Cyrodil would be a great place for crossbows.

I'll try to think of as many as I can: Spears, Potato, Axe(As a separate skill), Medium Armour, short/long blade skills, items that allow you to cast spells and have a charge, mark and recall spell, potato, throwing knives/shuriken, unique creatures(you ever see a kwama in real life or another fantasy?), deadric ruins, dwemer ruins, old style travel system, CHEESE! For everyone!, dialogue records, Longer questlines(MW mq for example), Main quest not being forced on the player, Unique landscapes and towns, and I'll add more tomorrow.
Edit: Being able to use Candles and other things like a torch. Long list of dialgue options, the creepy appearence of Sixth house members, Kagranecs Tools, Pauldrons being separate from armour, gloves being separate from eachother, wearing armour over clothes and robes over armour. Lycanthropy(thankz to Hircine). TWO Expansion sets. Free DLC. Culture. Levitation
Edit: I've had a change of heart, All characters killable, no key-locked doors, and large array of weapons to choose from(halberd, spear, broadsword, longsword, katana, dai-katana, tanto, etc).

Climbing narrowly beats out a return to a Daggerfallian level system.

I would bring back FREEDOM.

As in, no unkillable NPCs, no restricted areas, no unsleepable beds, no untakable/unsellable items, etc. etc. etc.

Freedom and openness are what I miss most from the older TES games.

Climbing was great in Daggerfall. I loved being a cat burglar who could climb onto roofs and jump from rooftop to rooftop, then pick locks on second stories, and steal lots of loot! Morrowind had the static content and great loot, but not the climbing. Oblivion had neither. Another reason it's inferior, but that's another thread.

Essential NPCs was a GOOD idea.
When was there a restricted area?
You could sleep in any bed under certain circumstances (as long as you weren't trespassing).
Not being able to sell quest items was a GOOD idea.
There weren't any items yoou couldn't take.
You should actually play Oblivion before judging it.

  • No they weren't.
  • Arcane university, the Orrey, Everything in White Gold Tower, the various quest related areas where I "need a key". I'm fine with them being restricted, but my thief should be able to break in.
  • Trespassing shouldn't matter. What is the guy I just killed going to do? I could understand being interrupted while I sleep by guards, or the owner if he's still alive.
  • Nope. I had far too much crap in my inventory in Oblivion. I didn't want any of it.
  • I think you're right on this one.
  • You should actually play Oblivion before accusing us of not playing Oblivion. (Unless you're just another obnoxious "Oblivion has no faults" kinda person. In which case, I'm not even going to bother with you)

Like the other guy said. Bring back freedom... I want to be able to do those things that you mention you can't do in Oblivion.

In Morrowind you could kill any NPC and sell any item to anyone who would barter you. You actually had to be careful about what you were doing. This can be both a good and a bad thing... it's a matter of taste.
In Morrowind you could kill an NPC and take his/her house for yours to keep, and sleep in any bed as long as nobody owned it or NPCs were not looking. Killing an NPC in Oblivion will not let you use his/her house like in Morrowind.
There was a lot of restricted areas in Oblivion, in some cases you would need a key to enter places or open containers. In Morrowind you could open anything if your lockpicking skill was high enough, or you had a spell or scroll that would let you unlock level 100.

Morrowind also had more weapons and weapon types, more armor, more spells (like teleport and levitation to mention a few)... this enhances freedom.

So... bring back freedom, like that other guy said. That's my opinion.

Edit: Partially ninja'd by Hircine. :P

-Yes they were(considering Radiant ai and anytime someone essential follows you), I'm always being randomly told that So-and-so was knocked unconsious.
-It would ruin the quests for you, We can assume that the Archane university was magically locked.
-There is always the infinate chance you'll get caught while sleeping.
-There aren't that many quest items.
-Maybe.
-I do actually play Oblivion. All the time. I actually played Morrowind, too. And from what I get, you sound like one of those "Morrowind has no faults" type people.

-No. If I want to kill Martin and ruin the main quest, then god damnit, I have a right to!
-So what? The point of an open sandbox world is that I can do anything and go anywhere. If I want to ruin the quests, that's my own fault.
-Yes, that would be what I just said...
-I don't want a single item to clutter up my inventory, if I don't want it. So what if I end up selling it? Again, that's my own bloody fault.
-No I'm not. there's just never any debates about Morrowind's problems, because we can admit to them. Some of those problems include:
  • Lack of AI
  • Many things cut from Daggerfall
  • Not enough quests and random encounters
  • Certain queslines where very anti-climatic (e.g. the two temples)
  • Lack of Dodge animations
  • Bad Animations
  • Bugs
  • Bad journal system pre-Tribunal
  • Lack of Lycanthropy pre-Bloodmoon
  • Perhaps some other's I've forgot

The thing is, I'm fine with Morrowind having problems. No one ever debates these things, so the arguments never come up. Oblivion, whether you people like to admit it or not, just like any other game, has flaws.

In Morrowind you couldn't take the puzzle box 'till you got the quest.

I'd say every game in the series has something worth continuing or reviving in TES V.

Arena: The stupid riddles.

Daggerfall: The custom class creation as well as the gratuitous amount of skills. I'd really like to see skills divided into primary/major/minor again in the next Elder Scrolls game.

Morrowind: The ability to take virtually everything. I hated how most of the clutter in Oblivion was either bolted down or totally stupid (like a paintbrush jar).

Oblivion: The dungeon traps were really nice compared to Morrowind's generic exploding locks. With improved physics, you could get some really neat stuff done.
