If You Could Only Play 1...

I don't condone extremists from either side of the fence. The folks at the RPG Codex are crass and unreasonable, I don't even bother trying to argue Fallout 3's case there. Some select folks at NMA who are very vocal are no better. Still, we're not at NMA or the RPG Codex... Bethesda's forums are essentially the official forums for the entire series now, so there should be respect shown from both sides.

I'll admit that it's taken me a while, but I think I've reached the point where I can agree with the statement that respect should be shown from both sides. It's just that you were just lecturing on how FO1/FO2 fans ought to have their opinions respected and that they shouldn't be marginalized or insulted for their opinion about the Fallout series. And while I totally agree with the sentiment, I ask you - how many times have you made similar statements about people denigrating FO3 fans? And secondly, are you going to claim that "that number so low because no one denigrates FO3 fans for their opinions"?

EDIT: I specifically mean - here on Bethesda's official forums. Not Codex or NMA or any other site but this one.

I've defended Fallout 3 on many occasions, not its fan base in particular but I have no beef with them. To be honest, this is the first time I've defended either side of the fence because the debate is getting tiresome. Would I defend Fallout 3 fans if I saw the FO1/2 > All crowd ganging up on them? Probably. I'm sure my reputation of being harsh towards Fallout 3 precedes me making this statement seem shallow and untrue, but what can I say to that?

My problem here is not the debate itself, however; it's the method in which sheltom insults both the original games, and fans of the original games while stating that he's right and if you disagree you're wrong. I haven't seen any Fallout 1/2 extremist, or Fallout 3 extremist behave quite like that up until now on this forum. Although to be honest, I haven't gone out of my way to try and find them. If sheltom felt the opposite, he'd fit in at the RPG Codex, though.

I voted Fallout 3.
Isometric 3rd person point and click navigation has always bothered me. I tried Fallout 1 and 2. Sorry, it's really hard for me to get immersed in those types of games. Any of them. For that reason and that reason only. That's why I like Bethesda games exclusively.
My two bottlecaps.

I'd probably go with 2. 1 was great and it started it all, and 3 is a great game, but 2 was amazing. Fallout 2 was a HUGE game. There was so much to do.

Voted for Fallout 2, seeing how much time I spent on it during my first play through.

This would have more force if it was more apparent that it applied to Fallout 3 as well. There have been numerous comments about brain-dead console kiddies who are intellectual under-stimulated and are only interested in PHAT LEWTS that go by with nary a peep. There certainly is a LOT of condescension from folks who think FO3 >> FO1/FO2, but it is by no means any greater than that shown by those who think FO1/FO2 >> FO3.

Well, those comments aren't entirely false. Ever read this forum ? Heh.

FO2. FO2?. Hahaaa FO2! (Think Gary).
I've played a lot of games. Some of them - RPGs.
And I've started like what, ~20 chars in FO2 over the years?
How many finished? None. Even though the game let's you play on after you finish it. They all ended up chasing enclave random encounters near Navarro. I just didn't have the heart to finish the game...

Does this mean that you've never set out to sea in the Oil tanker?

Fallout 3 because I didn't even know the Fallout series existed before this, and I'm not really interested in what has come before.

I'll probably be speaking some blasphemy by saying this...

I could NOT get into any games in the 90's. The style of graphics and gameplay just bugged me... a LOT. With the way games are now, how advanced the graphics are and the immersive quality of first-person, I don't think I'd every be satisfied going backwards.

However, the stories of previous Fallouts is incredibly interesting to me... I WISH Bethesda would remake them utilizing today's technology.

Wow, I actually got de ja vu and I don't know why xD

Well that's a very close minded response, you like Fallout 3 but you're not interested in it's predecesors? I suppose most kids with an attention deficit would agree >_<

What has the gaming community become :P

Fallout 3, because it is the only Fallout I have ever played. I don't want to take a chance playing a game for 2 moths that I might not like.

Well I didn't want to hijack this thread - but I wonder if Talonfire has anything to say about this post?

FalloutChris, here's the line that I'm hoping he'll say to you:

Well, usually I get to the point where the tanker is considered up and running with the FOB etc.
Got to the oil rig once. Cowardly reloaded and stepped off the Valdez ;)

I've had the luxury of witnesing the end though - a friend of mine taking mr. Prez out with a Super Stimpack frenzy... and then big-blue-and-ugly with a single critical to the eyes with the YK.

Closed minded? Perhaps, but don't you think you're being a little closed minded yourself? He doesn't have to be interested in them. As long as he isn't blatantly insulting them or their fans I don't see how it hurts you. Not everyone who likes Fallout 3 is going to care about its predecessors, that's just something old school fans like us have to accept.

However, the stories of previous Fallouts is incredibly interesting to me... I WISH Bethesda would remake them utilizing today's technology.

You could always get a synopsis of both of them on the Fallout wiki.

The only thing that really gets my goat is when people come here and can do nothing but fault Bethesda for a myriad of reasons while "enjoying" their games and using this forum. It's like going to somebody's house for dinner and saying "Thanks, I'll eat your food...and drink your wine, but it's crap....why, I've been eating over at so and so's house for years....and their food is much better".

It would be like me going to a NWN forum, and slamming the Isometric 3rd person point and click navigation and constantly comparing it to Morrowind.....then expecting everybody to 'respect my opinion'. That would be fairly lame.

Well, I think it's okay to point out what you think Bethesda did wrong. Being harsh is often the best way to get Bethesda to recognize any mistakes they made; that's the only way they can grow as a company. As long as it's constructive criticism (emphasis on constructive) I don't see the problem with pointing out Bethesda's faults. If you're just insulting them for no real reason, that's another story entirely.

This is true if looked at it that way, but for a moment, consider it not as barging into someone's house, eating their food and insulting them on it... but perhaps instead that its like visiting Graceland [now under new ownership], and remarking that something about the new Goth decor just doesn't seem right, and that the cerulean spiked loafers on display are just soooo sooo wrong that its not funny. Then you notice that the 'King' suddenly has an F in his name instead of a V ~that can't be right, it wasn't 'spelled' like that before... Huh, hey what's going on here!? :biglaugh:
