If You Could Only Play 1...

Post » Sun Dec 06, 2009 5:34 am

If you could only play either Fallout 1, 2, or 3 for, saaay, 2 months straight, which would you choose and why?

I'd have to go with Fallout 2. Too many good random encounters, too many ways to do everything, too much stuff to do.

Oh, and no saying Oblivion, Morrowind, etc. Keep it Fallout please :D

My vote is a bit biased as I've never played 1 or 2. But in my experience if you play the most recent game in a series and like it, the others before it aren't up to snuff. Like they have less sufficient gameplay mechanics that are similar but not alike, or in some cases totally different.

Well for a Fallout game it would naturally have to be Fallout 2 everytime, as amazing as 1 is, being a pioneering effort, and did nothing wrong in my eyes, 2 is just so much more of a game, with god knows how many extra weapons, armours, quests, and far more interesting NPCs. Everything was just improved ten-fold ^_^

I'm afraid to say that'll mostly be the case, on this forum at least, but anyone is entitled to an opinion, biased or not :P

But you might be pleasantly surprised if you decided to play its predecesors. Ok the engine is completely outdated, and the interface and gameplay is completely different. But the game mechanics in 1 and 2 are unmatched. Honestly I don't know why Bethesda stripped them down, they were amazing :) I just hope it was because they were so busy building the game they there was no time to tweak the mechs, because they would have really enhanced the game, and the fusion of that system in a 3D environment, would have probably made me cry like a little girl :P

I would put it to anyone to play the previous games, before they judge and try to silence the purists :)

Fallout 3. There is enough of FO2 that I dislike, so that is out. Fallout 1 would be possible, but right now, it would be FO3

Well, I've played Fallout 1 and 2 quite a bit, so for the next two months I guess it would be Fallout 3.

In reality, though, I got frustrated with the lack of solid gameplay mechanics in Fallout 3 compared to 1 and 2 (the RPG mechanics anyway...IMO the RPG system in Fallout 3 doesn't measure up to that of 1 and 2), so now I've moved on to other games. I'll probably come back to Fallout 3 after a while and play with more mods, but for now I'm done.

I'd go with Fallout 2, myself. Fallout 3 was sort of a learning experience for Bethesda, and there's some wrinkles they've introduced into the game mechanics that I'd like to see ironed out - some things that I don't think work so well for the type of game they're trying to make. A few years from now and I think I might choose Fallout 4 instead, we'll have to wait and see.

I liked Fallout 1 just fine, but there's a number of improvements I enjoyed with Fallout 2. The pacing (of character advancement and especially equipment progression) felt much more compelling to me. Starting out as a Tribal and really struggling to even get a Pipe Gun and a couple over-priced Stimpaks was a lot of fun to me. Actually gave you a use for things like Sharpened Spears, etc. And it made me really appreciate it once I finally got to the Power Armor/ Plasma Rifle combo. If felt like much more of an accomplishment due to the steeper curve. Plus, a larger scope to the game, more fleshed-out interactions, and more ways to impact the world with your actions. And of course the various polishing additions, as well - slightly improved interface and cleaner graphics, being able to "push" NPCs out of doorways, etc.

I actually like all 3 just fine, but #2 is always going to be a special memory for me.

Having played all 3, 1& 2 a lot more than 3, I would still have to say 3. There's faults to be sure but I never got as immersed IN the game as I have with 3. Maybe its the change from isometric to 1st person. The feeling that I am really there.

I have heard heaps about fallout 1 & 2 but... I think I would still choose fallout 3. It just has so much you can do, so much to find, so much to kill!!!! Lol.

Fallout 1 and 2 are better than Fallout 3 in many and many aspects, but I think they get boring too fast.
You can't play a single save in Fallout 2 for 200 hours.

Fallout 1. There are just so many conversations, things happening, locations, quests, special encounters, interesting reads and so on that are still, after all these years, fresh in my memory. Though Fallout 2 has some significant improvements, Fallout 1 was a truly unique experience for me at the time. I definitely put more hours into Fallout 2, but the impact came from Fallout 1.

Fallout 3. I didn't really enjoy 1 and 2 as games, though I liked the setting etc. and thought they had a lot of good ideas.

Very tough choice...
Fallout 1 has the best story, best heads, most heads, and best voice work, Fallout 2 has all the fixes you wish were in Fallout 1 ~and its bigger. Fallout 3 has the best wasteland to explore.

From a pure combat "stance", I'd pick Fallout 2 hands down. If Fallout 3 includes the whole package [game plus GECK] then the Fallout 3 might be a good pick for the 2 months; because I've played the others to death and they hold only a few surprises.

But if F3 has the GECK then F2 can have the editor eh? My best choice would be Fallout 2 running Fallout 1's campaign. :woot:

~If all three were to be only the base [patched] games, then despite preferring Fallout 1, I'd choose Fallout 2. Its not the best in each category, but I think its the best overall.

+ 1
hard to chose between FO1 and 2.... like gizmo sad fo2 had all the fixes....

IMO fo3 is not fallout... so doesn't count... its missing too many important things to be falloutish enough... for me fallout is about story, substance, to be able to develop a "relationship" with your character... and why not the fact you can play tactical with mouse only... i'm lazy :)

I know there are some old people around here who will spit up their blood pressure medicine after reading this, but the previous Fallout games before 3 are just painfully terrible. I'm an old gamer too, and I fondly remember playing everything from Might and Magic 1 forward, including the first Fallout game, which, for its time, wasn't THAT bad I guess. So anyway, I never played the second one, probably because I never thought the first one was that great. So I picked up a copy of it three days ago and I've been trying to give it a fair and square chance since I've heard how awesome it was/is. Hahaha, I have to say it's truly, truly, terrible. I've played several hours each day wondering how could so many people praise this thing's value so high.

So yeah you start off in Fallout 2 with no armor and a stick (spear) then you get thrown into this dungeon with radscorpions and get poisoned a hundred times so you're pretty much hosed if you didn't take some melee or unarmed strength and endurance character. The first character I made was a science type and it took me the entire first day just to get out of the dungeon and win the fistfight with the guy guarding the door. So I decided to make a melee heavy character and figured I could get some science and other stuff later on. Well the rest of the game isn't much better I'm finding out. I just spent an hour fighting this Mr Handy robot who is guarding a wrecked vertibird with two dead enclave soldiers on the ground. I finally beat the robot and tried to loot the wreck and bodies only to find out there was nothing on them. No items whatsoever. Hahaha. Nice. So then I decided to be a bad guy in Fallout 2 and at level 3 go on a killing spree with the guns and spiked knuckles I found in the first town only to be killed easily by two unarmed women in a bathhouse. Uh yeahh awesome!

I blew it off my computer and took the disc into the back yard and shot it with my 12 guage.

Thank God for modern computer hardware and developers like Bethesda. I cherish my Fallout 3. May we never have to return to the dark ages of computer gaming again. Amen.

I have to go with 3. Luckily, having all 3 at my fingertips, I'm not limited to just one.

Having gone back to 1 & 2, all these years later, I've learned that my taste in games has changed. While I'm having a blast playing the original Fallout, I'm cramped by its limitations. Controls are cumbersome, the story is fairly limited all things considered, game crashing bugs are prevalent (just try and save over an old save game and you'll see what I mean), and alas the gameplay is so slow as to be distracting. I didn't even mention the eye strain caused by squinting at the tiny pixels.

Fallout 3 just feels more open and fun. There's just much more replay value in this third installment in my opinion. You could just spend all day wandering around or finally seek out every Spork you can find. Plan and execute a raid on Megaton; go for a swim down the Potomac; go sight seeing on the Mall; find some Deathclaws to spar with; make a new character that only uses a baseball bat and name him "Sluggo". With the first 2, outside of trying a unique character build, or just looking for some massive turn based battles, there just seems less to do after finishing the main quest.

While 1 & 2 are arguably better games, 3 has more of that sandbox feeling and overall sense of freedom. I'd probably be done with 1 and 2 by the first month, but I can see myself going back to 3 over and over.
