You dont need to sleep to level up?

Post » Fri Aug 26, 2011 3:30 pm

Slow down there, for a minute. We don't need beds to level, fine. But what's this about instant levelling? Maybe we have to go on our skills menu and level up, like in DAO? It's a possibility. (Unless someone confirmed that there is no such thing ;))

I am very happy with this change. I always thought the sleep to level up mechanic was very strange and contrived.

In fact I use the nGCD leveling mod in Oblivion, which among other things does not require sleep to level up. That concept of needing to sleep in a bed to level up just seems strange to me.

This is another step forward in improving immersion. Great job Bethesda :thanks:

I used Galsiah's Character Development, really handy in Morrowind!
However, it can be unstable so I switched to MADD leveler.

The problem with this system in Oblivion was that you wouldn't get bonuses for the things you levelled up if you waited with sleeping, since they scrapped the attributes though I don't see why they removed the Sleep to level mechanic.

It's too early to pass judgement. OP, your fears are not really based on leveling alone, but what comes with leveling, like scaled enemies and loot and whatnot. Until we see how the leveling system has been changed in relation to scaling, there's no way to tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing mechanics-wise (I'm not going into the immersion argument at all). For all we know, the actual scaling might not even happen until you've spent either a point on perks or a point on your health/magicka/stamina bars or both. For all we know, your level number might not even go up UNTIL those points are spent. In other words, it's possible that leveling skills only contributes to how many points you get for perks and the three bars, and that those are what affect what level you actually are. If this was the case, you could still be level 1 and have 100 in every skill, but have a mass amount of perk points and stat points unspent.

Of course that's just speculation. The point is, we don't know how the effects of such a system will play out. It's too early to go bashing it with only the current information we have on it.

So beds in Skyrim are now going to be useless placeholders to make the world look more realistic?

I'm really hoping for a hardcoe mode to make use of them.

You speak a lot of sense for a crazy cultist.

[Edit] No eelwrolyat! You can still get a bonus for sleeping, so not useless.

Oh noes! You can't roleplay and make the game seem hyper realistic!

I'm fine with it. Who cares? I don't "like" it or "dislike" it. The only reason it was really needed before was that the horrible level scaling made the game more difficult at higher levels.

This can be the sort of comment that frustrates a lot of people.

It has been said several times (including in this very thread i think) that resting in beds will give you the same 'well rested' boost that was in Fallout. That is to say you earn XP quicker when you are bright and alert. Therefore beds will not be useless placeholders, but instead will be much more useful than the 'Sleep once avery 2 weeks' of the previous games.

The more important question, I think, is if we 're gonna be able to postpone leveling and choose how many perks or points we distribute instead of being forced to level and spend our points.

I actually think I agree with Do'tirath, the game is becoming a little bit minimalistic in many aspects.

There's more level-ups now. So a need for sleep is still a good stuff, but I think there just some new ways to make player sleep. Like in FNV for example.
And I think "well rested" boost is now in Skyrim right because of it.

I am pretty sure that you will not be forced to spend your perks when you level up. Since they are in a tree format, you will still have to pick the low level ones to get the higher level ones.

It's already been confirmed that you can wait to get a perk after leveling, but I'm not so sure about having to raise health/magicka/stamina.

In oblivion... I often chose to stay at low levels.. simply because the role I was playing as a humble herb gathering woodsman didnt need to be tackling high level beasts in my adventures.

Does anybody else do this? No? Everybody wants to play as an awesome hero? Well, that's strange.

You really need an option saying "Don't know until I see it in action".

The only reason it would bother me is if you still get 5 training options per level, and if you level up without taking those then you lose them. However, I trust Beth to make the right decision on this. I doubt it's going to be a case of HURR DURR CHANGE FOR NO REASON LOL

Oh Talos! We don't have to sleep in order to level up anymore! This is the worst possible thing that could have happened to Skyrim! The game is just simply RUINED!!

But seriously, do people just TRY to find ways to complain about a game that isn't even released yet?

If he wants to stay low level, that's his choice. He's not the only one. No need to be a smartarse about it. ;)

..to ruin the game? ... Seriously this news is TERRIBLE!

In oblivion... I often chose to stay at low levels.. simply because the role I was playing as a humble herb gathering woodsman didnt need to be tackling high level beasts in my adventures.

Also why ever bother sleeping in a bed? why waste money paying for a bed at an inn? with regenerating health and instant levelling... why not just wait for an hour in a town?

I am really unhappy with the news :( It removes the value of coming across a bed after a long, heavy jaunt in the wild... equipment broke, low supplies.. but atleast can sleep and level up now.

This game has become way too arcady for my liking.

Honestly I am more than glad that they changed it to instant lvling

I like it. I use the nGCD mod for Oblivion that makes leveling up happen completely in the background. I don't know my level unless i check it from the menu. So Skyrim's leveling system sounds like a step up to me :goodjob:

However getting rid of the stupid attribute multipliers by removing attributes altogether seems pretty excessive (obviously not the only reason, i know ;)), but we'll see how it works after it's released.

Oh, and i still use beds, mostly because i've added the hunger/thirst/sleep needs like New Vegas' hardcoe mode has.

I'm happy because I don't have to worry about turning into a vampire when I want to level up, because I haven't noticed I have the disease (whatever it's called). But apart from that it's all together more convenient. Plus level scaling isn't as bad as Oblivion so it shouldn't be too much of a problem in that perspective.

Off topic: Duuude I always got PISSED when I went to sleep and got turned into a vampire when leveling up because I though a vampire was coming in and biting me.

I was a noob

On topic: I'm okay with this. But sleep bonuses? Sounds pretty cool, what kind of bonuses are we talking about here?
