Do you ever use grenades?

In my opinion grenades are useless unles your fighting large crouds or use plasma grenades on robots, is there anyone who uses grenades on everything and if so do you carry a normal weapon just in case??

Yes, they go boom with a high explosives skill. 170 dm in fo3.

However, only in vats. Throwing stuff, especially explosives, outside of vats is near impossible and suks.

They're also great with just 1 or 2 to get a wonderful effect of targets with crippled limbs. Then I take me leisure with them.

I use grenades indoors a lot since they bounce around corners and do a lot of damage to enemies that are confined in rooms or hallways. Other than that I'll occasionally use them in VATS if the enemy I'm attacking is far enough away so that I don't take damage from the blast.

Yeah, imo, grenades aren't very useful for general gameplay unless you're really focusing on them as a tactic. They are good for an initial damage blow tho.

It's also fun to give them to your human companion (they'll use them a lot if they don't have a more powerful ranged weapon) for the laughs....and if you stay out of their way, they're actually fairly effective with them. Outdoors, at least. Never give companions grenades indoors, haha.

I think grenades are great for cripleing I just dont see the point of them when you can carry a grenade launcher with 200 more grenades if you think about it it also weighs less to carry one because ammo weighs nothing plus you can also use high explosive and other grenades. I think grenades are great and all but there's no point in them.

Lol don't tell me you haven't had a companion waste an expensive and rare plasma grenade on a Radroach.

If I put them into their inventory....of course. :D But that's why I said for the laughs. It's not something you do for serious gameplaying.

This... They are actually quite usefull if you have a sneaky pt... want to clear a room with a lot of enemies...
Tactic: While being hidden quickly lob two grenades... (vats) at the entrance of the room... run back and mob up the rest with a machine gun...
Does this happen a lot.... Nope... Is this tactic very usefull no.

I will occasionally also use the "let's lob a grenade blindly in a room and watch if anyone reacts.." tactic... However... Outside and without Vats and not using corners... grenades imho are indeed pretty useless..

I use flash and frag grenades so much i got them hot keyed. There great for surprise attacks on small groups of enemy's, after witch i finish the survivors off with automatic weapons. There is almost nothing as awesome in FNV combat as pulling one off these of good. It was loud and they where dead before they knew what hit them.

Why does everyone have trouble with throwing grenades outside of VATS? Are you all on consoles or something? Anyway, I like using them to stick inside pockets. I love watching their pants explode! Throw grenades over hills and around corners and at the floor (if you have the perk or high DT) and everything will be alright.

Grenade rifles tend to break and not have much range.

Yep. Dynamite, an obviously not super powerful explosive like grenades is awesome to kill a high level enemy with by placing it in their inventory. So is c4.

Console here.

No I don't... but that doesn't stop me from carrying them around for no reason because I have some sort of weird OCD complex about always lugging around 6 frag grenades and 1 incendiary on me.

I find grenades in VATS unreliable. They can do one bar of damage to an enemy, or half their entirely. Way too often, I see it land too far away to do maximum or reasonable damage.

I don't use them, because I never find them strong enough, compared to simply giving a stealth-attacked enemy a headshot, instead.
In regular combat, by the time the thing goes off the enemy in question is usually too close to throw another one, and I have to spend time switching over to a weapon when I could of just shot them two or three times already, anyway.

I like consistency. Results with grenades for me are too random.

Then, there's the factor that those things cost a boatload, and I can sell them for a huge chunk of caps instead and sit on a big pile of money. It's so much more tempting to sell extra frag grenades than use them in combat.

Now pulse grenades on the other hand, I always carry two of them with me because those things are beasts against robot enemies. Robots don't tend to run directly up to you when they fight, they stay off and fire. So pulse grenades are great for them.

I usually use a heavy amount of Dynamite at the beginning of the game, but after a while I just sell it. I quite honestly have never thrown a single grenade in New Vegas. That is most likely because I have never played an Explosives centric character. Though they are my favourite things to sell.

Yeah, the only way I've really used grenades are to explode unsuspecting pants. As others have said, it's too inconsistent.

I do use mines sometimes to deal with tough enemies indoors - like the Nightkin at REPCONN, but not often.

Yeah. I use grenades a fair bit before I get my first grenade launcher, but after that, not so much. They still are fun to use in random situations, though. Definitely a VATS-only thing for me, though. They bounce so randomly and stupidly outside of VATS, it's just frustrating and unproductive to even throw them.

I usually forget about them, so by the time I do use them I'm fighting a couple super mutants and I have about 20 stocked up. I'll usually use them all and still not kill them :x

You Bastard! WHAT DID THOSE PANTS EVER DO TO YOU! :stare:

I never use them. In other games they can be useful on clusters of enemies, throw them into pillboxes, et cetera. But given the way New Vegas is built combat wise, grenades are more of an item used because you like them, not because you need them.

I generally prefer projectile explosives to grenades, but as I've mentioned in another thread, grenades are hands down THE most effective weapon in Dead Money because they cripple limbs very reliably and you can bounce them around the corner to destroy that hidden speaker or hologram emitter.

You can collect quite a few frag grenades from traps, but with Mad Bomber you can convert all those MFCs into MFC grenades, and take apart some of that .357 ammo for Tin Grenades, and you have enough ammunition to last you the entire DLC and then some. It's a more efficient use of these ammo types than firing it through Holorifle or a Police Pistol.

That reminds me, don't know why but it does, that I also don't like using them because it scatters the good loot lord knows where sometimes.

Grenades, useless? -shocked face-

Use them all the time actually. They are great for indoors, & out doors. Once you learn how to properly throw them off the walls outside of vats, it opens up a large possibility of what you can do. Besides, who does not want to see someone's legs be blown off?

Only when I'm overlooking a large amount of enemies without them noticing me and their grouped together (such as Forlorn Hope on my Legion playthrough, I used up all twenty grenades I had for my grenade launcher and all ten frag grenades I had too).

Otherwise no.
