You feelin' lucky punk?

Post » Wed Dec 23, 2009 10:08 am

MY luck is at 7. I chose the Intense training perk when I leveled up to two and I placed the extra point into Luck. Out of all the characters I have made I never really used luck and I am really curious to see how it affects my character. My SPECIAL is pretty much 6's all teh way with a 5 Per. and 7 Luck. I am wondering if luck affects stats or skills as I chose Weird Wasteland for one of my Traits and I figured luck would bring about more frequent Weird encounters! I also chose the Loose Cannon Trait as I like to use Grenades and now Dynamite. My problem with that was I really wanted the character to throw those explosives faster. This trait is great and I don't mind the range set back I figure all the boom boom will compensate for the range and Luck would help with that.

Are critical hits the only aspect affected by Luck in the game? I have noticed I get more sneak attack one shot kills now that I have more luck.

Luck adds to all skills at .5 per point of luck. So at 10 Luck all your skills go up 5. Each point of luck is also +1% chance to crit. I'm pretty sure it has no bearing on the Wild Wasteland perk. Wild Wasteland is simply an on or off switch for quirky easter eggs.

Getting a hit while Hidden is a guaranteed crit. Whether it kills them or not is based on the damage and crit multiplier of your weapon. Which factors in any skills or perks related to that weapon or crits. Luck has no bearing on the damage done once you crit.

Aww rats I wasted the SPECIAL point then. Now I think i'd rather have the extra point in Charisma for the story... oh well I can always make yet another character....

it doesn't just effect crits, it comes into play with all kinds of things, repairing, cracking locks and terminals

so i wouldn't consider it a waste of points

I have a luck of 10. It seems to help a lot. Didn't help me much when I ran up on a deathclaw the first time though.

7 in luck.
I get a lot of crits, which is helpful because I'm not focusing on combat with this character. Haven't made it to New Vegas yet I've heard luck factors in when you gamble.

I did better than when I ran up on a deathclaw the first time on FO3. In FO3 it killed me in one hit. In F:NV it took it two.
I even tried to run when I saw it (freaking thing is a sprinter).

haha! Agreed, i have two playthrough accounts and one has 10 luck and fairly high charisma, tag skills are speech, barter and sneak

I don't know if its true, but when im on the strip gambleing i win A LOT more than i do on my run and gun type character.

I've even won the jackpot twice on the speech character. So that character is swimming in caps, but it's hard to play without high guns skill :sadvaultboy:

So this weekend im making a new character, 10 luck and tag skills are gunna be speech guns and barter :hubbahubba:

That way ill be able to defend myself in the wasteland but ill still get the speech aspect of the game.

hah yea had'nt even thought about gambling! i hav'nt made it to the strip yet, hopefully my 9 luck will make me a fortune :foodndrink:

i went out on a limb and make a really lop sided kinda go for broke character, and so far it's working out really really well

i did like 9 str, 10 int, 9 luck and left perc, agil, and charis at 1, can't remember what i put end at

but 10 int gives you so many skill points per level any skills that were lagging got caught up real quick

i'm using barter, guns, melee, med, repair, science, and lockpick at at only level 5 i have them all about to hit 50

so far generally kicking @$$ and taking names on normal diff!

i like how anytime there's a speech challenge, there's usually an alternative way to win it based on one of your other skills or intelligence

I have lucky 7 of course.

Luck plays a huge roll in blackjack. I won like 8/10 or 9/10 hands in that game. It kept giving me the "your feeling lucky" signal.

I play with 10 luck, the +3 crit perk and bonus criticals perks, etc. I find critting does about 60% of my overall damage, I might shoot 8 times with 0 damage, and then 1-shot him with a crit to the head. I definately enjoy it.

Seperately to the .5 skill, and the crit rate, and the gambling, I think luck also gets rolled into defense checks. I autosave a lot, and if I step on a landmine and die instantly, I reload. Sometimes I dont take virtually any damage however, even from the same exact landmine. I assume thats luck based as well.

I find luck to be the BEST offensive combat stat. A few extra skill points from agility/etc dont even compare (melee dmg is a diff. story of course) and I dont use VATS that much, with my 75 AP I can VATS plenty, I'd rather have super crits than some more AP.

Wow I didnt put any points into Luck as I think luck doesn't actually help you that much.

4 luck I think I have does this mean that the deathclaws are going to get me?

It doesn't matter what you put at the start of that sentence. The answer is always yes.

Unless they are those powerful yet harmless FLYING deathclaws.

Although I must say if New Vegas had a lottery system that was linked to luck I'd put all my points into it.

and yes luck has quite an impact, back in the morrowind days there was a glitch spell you could make to perm increase attributes

you could put your luck to up to like 1000 and basically own the game as a level 1 character if you were so inclined

In FO3, I never put in less then 6 points, and preferably 7 or 8. I went with 6 at the start of NV and I might go back and change that on a 2nd play through.

Went with: S4 P8 E4 C7 I4 A7 L6

Next time around I might squeeze two points out of STR/END and put them into Luck or AGI. I tend towards a very sneaky / stealthy / subtle / finesse play style, and the high CHA along with Speech and Barter is enjoyable to me.
