What? The Mage's Guild is an imperial guild. They have the same politics wherever they are. Be it Morrowind, Cyrodiil, High Rock, Skyrim, whatever.

Apperently not. The imperial city was the Centre of Law, Commerce, and Education, and that was where the Archane University was.

Edit: There are rumors that Archmage Traven is abusing his position as Head of the Mages guild.
That was nowhere near enough. Apart from the fact that there was only one corrupt leader in the whole game (Cheydinal Mages Guild), these guys were just lowly members doing what was best for them. I mean, Morrowind had far worse things than this, and even that was lacking in the corruption department.

I meant the Fighters Guild, and Cheydinhal guild was full of thugs, and Leyawin guild trashed a bar because they weren't getting paid.
Again, that was nowhere near enough. And, it wasn't bribery, it was a method to make the Mage's complain, and get more guards at the university.

You win this one. I agree.

Pff, that's a requirement to be Archmage. :P

That's a bad thing? I'd do the same.

I'm not just bashing Oblivion here, by the way, I'm bashing Morrowind and Oblivion.

That'd be the waterfront district, Poor, those annoying guards that keep causing trouble, and pirates.

Isn't it the Politics of the mages Guild you wanted. He was a relatively good guy who used his position of influence to ban Necromancy.

That's a bad thing? I'd do the same.

When you said that the fighters guild was supposed to be a group of mercenarys without morals, I thought you meant Oblivions Fighters Guild had to much morals.

No way. the way the waterfront was represented was how I expected the middle lass areas to be reresented. (Market District, Talos District, etc.). Everything was far too happy in Oblivion.

He was a relatively good guy who used his position of influence to ban Necromancy.

Exactly. The Mage's guild aren't supposed to be "good guys". the thing as a whole was just one big good guy convention.

And it's not politics I want, it's beureocracy. The Mage's guild is supposed to be about profit. It's an Imperial Faction.

When you said that the fighters guild was supposed to be a group of mercenarys without morals, I thought you meant Oblivions Fighters Guild had to much morals.

What? My point is the fighter's guild are supposed to have NO morals. They're neither good or evil. They're just in it for the profit. The only way they can be seen as "good", is that they follow the law, because it's the best way to profit.

Mages Guild fought with Necromancers because Traven was an idiot and banned it. Very bad move, considering the fact that Empire was weak even before Oblivion Crisis started. Just think how much help the necromancers could offer against the Daedra. Also, guild's resources could be fully used against the Daedra (including research), too. Because of Traven they chased necromancers in Cyrodiil, wasting resources.

And yeah, slums were virtually non-existent in Oblivion. A shame, really.

I will ignore the main quest as long as I can. I want to explore, find a good house to set up base (if there isn't one... make one) and then, explore sommore. I will do as many of the side quests as possible and join up with any guilds that strike my fancy. I will join the Dark Brotherhood (or the equivalent) with my first character, and the mages guild with my second. Yes the Dark Brotherhood was cliche, but the quests amused me. And the characters amused me. I love that orc.......

But mostly avoid what it is I am actually supposed to be doing if favor of running around and exploring. In Oblivion I made it to level 30 without so much as going to the Priory.....

First explore the surrounding area and then get to the nearest town to sell off any loot, and then explore the city and gather infomation on the countryside and the game setting in general from the citizens and bookstores and do some quests. After that do the main quest with some random exploring mixed in.

Track down Mai'q the Liar, find out what he's been up to since he left Cyrodiil, and do some scooma with him... and if I'm not too wasted go off into the nearest dungeon and kill everything within.

Do the main quest until there's a natural break in it, then guilds and sidequests. Maybe some night classes at the Bard's College in Solitude? :D

Search the land, and eventually find daedric shrines :celebration:

for the whole assassin kills people for money thing, assassin kills someone for some purpose (dislike of political views ect.)
assassin that kills for money then becomes a mercenary if im not mistaken. Which is kinda what the fighters guild is theoretically supposed to be, and what the blackwood company became. DB was supposed to be evil. That was there thing. Which if it wasn't so damn cliche wouldnt have been so bad IMO.

Aim to do the main quest (as it's a good intro to the game), but I know I'll get horribly distracted and will end up taking very long walks up to very high places in order to get a good view of the place :)

Voted 'other'.

I save the hard work for real life, so bring up the console so i can use cheats (good items) so I can relax when exploring the land / entering a dark cavern full of Badies.
