In Daggerfall, how on bloody earth does that system work?

I was a Dibella apprentice, and was doing a quest to fetch some snake venom. So I get it and return to the quest giver. She promotes me to Adept, but next thing she says is that she despises my kind. Then she refuses to talk to me, which means I can't complete the quest.

I also have all kinds of people telling me to shove off for no reason.
