"You have been waylaid by enemies and must defend yourse

Post » Tue Apr 05, 2011 1:01 am

I want there to be random encounters with both carriages and the magic map. but i want it to be as follows:

In order of the most likely to have random encounters:
1.Map-Travel on foot, to a destination that is far off a main road.
2.Map-Travel on foot, to a destination that is near a main road.
3.Map-Travel on horseback, to a destination that is far off a main road.
4.Map-Travel on horseback, to a destination that is near a main road.
5.Carriage Travel. These will likely only go on main roads. Still a chance for random encounter though.

^I don't want there to be TOO much variance between those (especially 3-5) but i think there should be something like that.

I want Friendly, Enemy encounters as well as Non-crucial encounters.

I feel like encounters would be amazing if the carriage was in real-time. Just sitting in your carriage not expecting anything and BANG! your chauffeur has an arrow through his head and you're surrounded by bandits.

Yes for real time carriages, and I hope they include boats that work that way too!

there should be some like a tree has fallen over and if you have a high enough wood cutting skill you can chop it up out of the way, or there has been an avelanch and you need to continue on foot. it would also be cool if you stopped at places to let the horses rest and eat and drink, while their doing thst you can look around the village for shps and quests. you can then continue in the carriage or stay in the town when it leaves.

Good idea.

Daggerfall did this well, where you had an option to travel safely, using inns etc.
Or you could travel cheaply and dangerously, camping on the road.

I could dig it for map travel. I think it would make map travel seem more like actual travel than teleportation.

I don't like the idea of fast travel being interrupted, however I do like the idea of random encounters when traveling on foot.

Yes, but only for carriages, which I'd prefer to be real-time with the option to skip, and if I skip, then no random encounters. If there are encounters, then I'd prefer enemies only. I can stop to see friendly things like merchants whenever I want, don't waste my time. If it's going to happen, have it be exciting.

What he said. The random encounters in Dragon Age were really annoying.

Random encounters would be nice but at a realistic level. If an arrow is shooting through the side of your carriage drivers head every other trip then you will fast be running out of drivers. Furthermore the probability of encounters should lower as your rank increases because no bandit in their right mind would decide to pick a brawl with someone who just so happens to be the leader of every guild and also wearing the champion of skyrim armour.

Except that in dragon age they were not really random.
The time you got em may have been, but you got each one exactly only once. (with the exception of the trader.)

Dragon age had almost been an RPG, but the non respawning enemies in a static world and non random encounters ruined it at the last moment.

This was being told a lot of times, but I don't remember ever being attacked during fast travel in Daggerfall, and I tend to use reckless travel a lot...

And I really don't like the idea of random enemies appearing during fast travel. When you go trough a possibly dangerous zone, it should drop you out of fast travel, so you can deal with the enemies. Especially if you can meet non-hostile encounters as well.

I would think only for Fast Travel.... the added security of avoiding these things would be the only reason I'd ever bother paying a fee to take a carriage.

Yeah, I agree to an extent. I'm surprised how many people said "only for carriage". That doesn't make much sense to me. but hey, i put the option up there cause i knew people were gonna choose it.

I'm also surprised how many people picked "Morrowind-style" for the third question. RDR is the same, but with an option to ride real time.

I thnk you should be able to use different types of caravan ( at different prices obviously); highly defended ornate caravan (goes slowly due to protection but very low chance of encounter) shabby undefended caravan ( the opposite fast with high encounter chance) and in-between so you can role play being rich or poor and have scenarios based upon it ( seriously what kind of bandit would attack a heavily defended caravan while an undefended one much more likely)

I think fast travel should only be interupted by ennemies. All the other cool encounters such as a merchant in need of help, a group of nords hunting, a bosmer mage falling from the sky, etc. should be there only for those who take the time to walk from point A to B.

I love this idea, and would be happy if it were implemented. :D

Bandits not attacking the leader of all the guilds and champion of Skyrim doesn't make sense to me. It would stand to reason that yes, this person is a highly skilled individual. It would also stand to reason that with surprise, superior numbers, superior positions, and a bit of luck, this (assuredly) very rich individual could very well fall to an ambush. I would find it odd if bandits were not trying to rob rich, high-profile people. Sure, maybe not the King or Duke or whatever-- they would likely be the targets of assassins or very skilled thieves, not bandits, after all. But a well-organized bandit ring would have spotters in nearby towns. Hear an adventurer bragging about his haul in a local tavern? Let the bandit leader know and watch his travel plans! Hear from a loose-lipped fence about someone selling a load of stolen goods? Follow her and set up an ambush! Hear about a guild leader traveling between towns? Choose the time and place where you will strike to relieve them of their immense revenues!

As far as gameplay goes, I don't want people to stop attacking me just because I'm strong. Of course I'm going to win every battle (reloading as necessary)-- otherwise I'd have to restart! But that doesn't mean I want to live in some godlike state where everyone knows who I am and don't dare to cross me. That would be a boring game indeed. Challenging bandits are just what the doctor ordered! :D

I want Night to be an "encounter" that happens.

If you are using any form of Fast Travel (except for "Express" Carriage service that costs a lot), you should be interrupted whenever night sets in as it is "too dangerous" to proceed. You can then choose to hoof it on your own, or camp/stay at inn until morning.

That would mean that they are magic carriages then. It'd be much harder to avoid ambushes in a carriage then it would be by walking.
