Stormcloaks. Except Ulfric gets assassinated before the moot and Balgruuf takes the throne.

Thats just my personal wish though. I severely doubt that will happen.

Who will have won in the lore?

I think if it comes down to a future Elder Scrolls Game; they'll gloss over the details of the Civil War; and paticularly, who won. I think if we look at Skyrim in the future, it will not be an Imperial Provence, But it will not be ruled by Ulfric's line, but rather that decended from the old King's wife.
This satisfies both conditions; Ulfric is defeated and the old kings wife is proclaimed High Queen. However due to the death of the Emperor, the Empire disintegrates and Skyrim gains self rule
or
Ulfric declares his inderpendence and is named High King. Alas! he is assassinated by vile Thalmar agents, and the mootl votes a new High Queen in her place.

It could also be seen the other way, that Skyrim remains in the empire.
Ulfric is defeated and the old kings wife is proclaimed High Queen, and remains part of the Empire.
or
Ulfric declares his inderpendence and is named high King. Alas! he is assassinated by vile Thalmar agents, and the moot votes in a new High Queen, who decides that the best interest of Skyrim is to be part of the Empire

Ether way, future games can solve the matter by not going into much detail over the events and the victors of the Civil War. Or they can be cheap and proclaim Dragon Break (though I must admit, things don't turn out well for Ulfric, as much as I like his character)

I'm for the Empire. I'm very hopeful that they will have won the battle for Skyrim in the lore.

That would set up a "Great War, round 2" rather nicely.

This question presupposes that the protagonist's involvement determines what side wins.
That's probably the case, but just thought I'd point it out.

With the Emperor's fate I think they have done something clever. I feel that even if you side with the Empire, it is going to crumble in the lore, and Skyrim will end up either indipendant with a High King or the rallying cry for the forming of a new Empire. That way they don't have to tell you who won ingame.

Frankly, i'm more bewildered how they are going to handle the Dragonborn. They are going to have to do something like with the Shivering Isles, because its one thing to messily resolve a historical event, but quite another to gloss over the life and fate of first Dragonborn since Tiber Septim, who much of what can be done in Skyrim, and has the Blades reform around them.

I actually see them making the Dragonborn the first Emperor of a new Empire... but on the other hand I don't know how they could swing it. At least not by moving to the 5th Era and making the details of 'that' Empire's founding lost to time.

Some cataclysm will befall Skyrim and make the decisions and events a moot point, save some of the more important ones.

I say this because it's been the Standard Operating Procedure for all the Elder Scrolls games.

Arena: Events involving the Chaos Staff are murky already. The Champion is credited with saving the Emperor, nothing more.

Daggerfall: The Warp in the West. Everyone and No One wins.

Morrowind: Vvardenfell literally exploded.

Oblivion: The Great War burned the majority of Cryodill to ash.

Having not finished Skyrim, I can't say for certain what will happen. However, with the return of Dragons I suspect there will be a resurgence in the Dragon Cult, and Skyrim will potentially become a "lost" Province. Especially if they decide to bring in any one from Ak'ivir.

It's just going to be all vague. You never hear anything from the previous heros in the next games, except for maybe vague references.

Nobody will know what happened to the Dragonborn after Skyrim, perhaps he will leave for Akavir or some lame excuse like that... As for the Empire, I have this feeling the Empire is falling apart anyway, and we will see or hear a few lines in the next game something like

"When the civil war ended, Emperor Titus Mede II was assassinated and the Elder Council was unable to quickly repair the situation. With the Empire falling apart entirely, following the assassination the moot in Skyrim became even more important, when Thalmor agents then killed the pretty much guaranteed winner tensions rose and a second civil war looked likely to start. In a compromise The Jarl of Falkreath was elected High King, because he was an idiot and nobody liked him, but nobody really loved him either."

Okay that last part may be over the top, but that's about all the information that you can expect.

It will be vague and rarely spoken of, like whether Vivec was killed or not. The fact is, Ulfric dies and someone else takes his job whether it's because you were in the legion, or because time passed and jarls die. We don't even know how far into the future we'll jump next time.

It would be funny if they went Imperial and said that the widow became high Jarl...and then some politics happened and she peacefully left the Empire, preferring not to be ruled by imperials or elves or to send nords into battle.

Like I said in the other thread about this, there has only been one main quest that gave you real multiple endings, and only one catastrophe to account for it. In that case, the difference between endings had a big effect on how the world turned out, so they had to come up with something special to cover it. (Apparently the endings included "Orsinium is founded" and "guy becomes god".) Otherwise, the consequences of major questlines have always been carried through to future games. So we can't draw conclusions based on a series of disasters, other than that the devs prefer to set new events in places we care about. The things most similar to the Stormcloak/Imperial problem so far are where Vivec got off to post-Morrowind, and which great house the Nerevarine joined. They're not all that relevant to the other games (Vivec's power going away is relevant, but it doesn't matter if he died, or was depowered and left) and so there isn't a problem with just ignoring them. Therefore they are most likely to downplay and be vague about this, as well.

Everyone seems to forget about the man who ordered the hit. He was in the Elder Council... Bethesda has already planned all this out. They're always 3 steps ahead.

Elder Council steps up and takes command, and having surmised that the Thalmor are still in a weakened position they overturn the White-Gold Concordat, ending the ban on Talos worship. This in turn starts the 2nd Great War, and Skyrim unites to support the Empire in the war, possibly along with Hammerfell rejoining in alliance with the Empire too.

Not only does that cover both endings, it also leads excellently into the next game; the PC is being held as a prisoner at a legion camp in Elsweyr/Valenwood/Hammerfell/Summerset Isles, where they are offered the chance to operate as an agent of the Empire in the war in order to avoid their execution.

As for Dovahkiin, he'll probably be highly involved in the uniting of Skyrim, and then fade away, possibly along with the Blades, going off to help in the war. Again, it covers both the player involvement in the civil war, and also what happens to him.

Or, of course, something completely nonsensical could happen. We shall see what we shall see, when Bethesda want us to see it.

I'd like the Stormcloaks. Not because I think it's the best outcome, honestly, a unified empire still is probably the best thing that can happen, but because having an independant Skyrim is much, much more interesting. We've already had a unified Empire. I want to see something new.

Well the guy who planned it, is dead in my game. But yeah some of the other people in the Elder Council could have taken over the Empire, but that's assuming any of them are even semi-competent which I seriously doubt. In times like these, changes of leadership hardly ever work out great especially when it happens through assassinations. The few things that held the Empire together might just fall apart, afterall Titus was at the very least an accomplished General and a reasonably skilled diplomat, what can we tell about the next?

Well, considering that you BREAK A DRAGON at the end of Skyrim, I think the answer lies in there.

Did Titus II have any kids? Are there any heirs to the throne? That might end up becoming a deciding factor UN the Empire's future.
