You know there's something wrong with the .50 when...

Post » Sun Dec 06, 2015 12:37 am

A .50 sniper rifle falls behind by over 25 points of damage to a vanilla .308 combat rifle.

Oh, and by the way, said .50 sniper rifle that falls by over 25 points of damage is also a violent legendary .50 (+25% damage).

The .50 caliber needs such a massive buff it isn't even funny... :sadvaultboy: :sadvaultboy: :sadvaultboy:

This game has no dedicated sniper rifle other than the gauss rifle (which doesn't feel the same). :sadvaultboy: :sadvaultboy: :sadvaultboy:

I recently made a sniper rifle out of a laser rifle. Give that a try, it's pretty decent.

.50 does indeed more damage. At least per shot. :o
And violent doesn't do +25% damage, thats only crit damage and not shown by the regular damage value.

For comparison:

I'll have to check, but I'm fairly certain my .50 sniper rifle does a considerable amount more damage than my .308 combat rifle..

That's what I did after realizing how pathetic .50 cal is.

My .50 cal only does 14 more damage than my combat rifle http://i.imgur.com/vNfTeRi.png,but the fire rate of the combat rifle is so much faster it easily makes it much more powerful.

I just found that mod here... the guy who created it obviously invested alot time.

I like the rebalancing alot.

Even though i'll end up deinstalling it again, since i like the harsh difficulty, and there wasn't anything that my hunting/sniper rifles and my knife couldn't "fix". :D

Yeah, he needs the Mighty Legendary Mod for +25% damage. I have a Mighty 10mm Pistol and it's very useful for CQC.

As for .50, I never saw the point. Refused to use it even in New Vegas due to the initial lack of a Silencer. GRA added one, but it seemed weird by that point. Same reason why I don't use a silencer on my Combat Shotgun in FO4.

I have no Ammo+ Perks, so finding .50 is bad enough. Unless I see something amazing, I doubt I'll ever use it for anything.

If it is meant to be a .50 AE cartridge then the damage figures make sense. That's a pistol cartridge and those seem awfully common in the commonwealth overall.

Although I do think he went on a little bit of a buffing spree, this looks rather promising. And melee weapons don't svck total ass in there too!

I think I'll try it out.

It's not meant to be .50 AE, simple logic can sort this out.

We know the .308 is a rifle round because there is no .308 pistol cartridge (at least not one that I'm aware of). With this in mind, we also know that the .50 modification gives a pathetically small damage boost, but a damage boost nonetheless. This most likely translates (in real life terms) to more kinetic energy.

Therefore, we can reasonably conclude that the .50 refers to the .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun). The .308 is a very powerful round as it is, if the .50 is going to pack a bigger punch, it can't be a pistol round .50 AE.

I found the .50 cal was excellent for ghoul hunting. So much so that I renamed my rifle "Ghoul Reaper" lol! Takes down most ghouls in one shot to the torso or head.

Anyone else think it's weird there are no autos that use .50?

Where's the HMG?

Ghouls are vulnerable to pretty much everything...

That's like saying "Look! my 10 (hyperbole) damage .50 cal took down a 1 HP ghoul! It's fine!"

It's not. It's underpowered. You'll find out soon enough (assuming that you are a newcomer to fallout 4).

Allow me to clarify once again. The .50 round in fallout 4 = the 12.7mm round from old fallout lore. It's way too common, far too early, to be seriously considered the mighty .50 BMG round.

That kind of svcks for those who want to stick with the traditional ammo types. My first playthroughs of both FO3 and NV were traditional scout snipers. The more I play, the less faith I have in the sniper rifles in this game.

I remember in FO3 and NV there were a couple perks really meant for snipers, and it essentially returned AP for successful shots and recharged faster. Doing it right you could VATS a swarm of cazadors. Took a little mix of sneak and regular aiming but it wasn't hard.

I was psyched to make my first .50 cal, but it only puts out 70 points of damage... By comparison my .44 handgun does 130 and just made a laser Rigel that is waaay, better a sniper rifle and even way better than my completely moded out laser sniper rifle.

I never liked VATS since the 85% DR in FO3. Only used it when absolutely necessary in NV. In FO4, it's used for Crits, so it becomes integral. My issue though, is how it won't even charge Crits when killing things outside of VATS (not that I've noticed at least).

If VATS is necessary for triggering crits, fine, but if I can't even charge the damn meter outside of VATS, that's a bad design choice imo. :/

While there are a number of .30 pistol calibers (.30 Carbine, 7.63x25 Mauser for examples), the .308 pistols are shooting .308 rifle rounds.....the way they made weapon mods to serve as a mechanism for leveling player firepower had the side affect of making rifle caliber pistols and cut down rifles popular in the Commonwealth. The only people who use weapons like that IRL are highly specialized hunters and competitive target shooters, and casual shooters in it for the lulz. Whatever gamesas intended ".50" in FO4 is ridiculously UP compared to .50 BMG, which is actually a light cannon round. The .50 Hunting Rifle would be a lot heavier than a .308 (most production rifles weigh in around 30lbs and require a huge muzzle brake to tame the recoil) and far more powerful.

Perhaps this an example of one of the paltry few things gamesas adopted from NV....in NV .308 was deemed OP and nerfed three separate times by Obsidian to try to force players to migrate to the AMR. Before the nerfs I could take Lanius down with 2 .308 JSPs to the head. Now in FO4 .308 is better than .50. lol

"The .50 round in fallout 4 = the 12.7mm round from old fallout lore"

And this was confirmed where? Who is to say that it isn't the .50 MG (basically the BMG in real life)?
