I swear. I have a case of Elder Scrolls Stupidity.

Last night, I was playing Oblivion, riding my horse in the dark. Then I suddenly got the bright idea "Oh hey, guards hold torches while on horseback, maybe I can do that! " Sure enough, I find out you can.

I have been riding my horse in the dark, with either nighteye (only when playing as a khajiit) or nothing at all. WHY DID I NOT SEE THIS EARLIER?

Also, when I first played Morrowind, I didn't realize you could change your character's gender, face, and hair. (This was quite a while ago)

I think I need to retrain my brain. :read:

.....I guess I'm not such an idiot after all. :celebration: I had no idea that no one else knew about this. (Or almost no one. XD) Everyone who hasn't tried it, try it out, it really is useful! (I'm on the 360, so no, it is NOT a mod....)

A ring, shield, or amulet with a light effect tends to be more useful. The radius for a torch is just too shallow to be practical for anything other than advertising your location to all those nasty creatures lying in wait.

Vagrant, I've been playing this game long enough to know this. My horse can outrun most of those enemies (as can I, if need be), so I don't really care. B)

Yes, but then you get into issues of combat not disengaging, guards running to assist you as soon as you get near town, and other little problems. Regardless, my point was that although this is a neat little discovery, it really doesn't help much in the long run because the light radius on torches is so horrible. There's a reason why very few people even use torches once they get a light/nighteye spell or any alternative... well, in addition to preventing them from using 2 handed weapons or a shield if they should ever have to fight. But really now, the specifics don't matter, and I think you might be inserting too much hostility within my reply.

A ring, shield, or amulet with a light effect tends to be more useful.

Is still a valid statement, isn't it? Especially when there are several vanilla shields with a light enchantment on them. If you're happy with using a torch, more power to you.

I figured the torch on a horse thing out early on, but I assure you I stumbled trying to figure out many similar type things. :goodjob:

One of the things I like to do with my horse is cast a spell of waterwalking on touch for 120 seconds. Very handy sometimes.

that sounds fun, I might just have to try that out.

just a couple days ago I found out that its not just enchanted, silver and daedric weapons that can damage ghosts, Ancient Akaviri Katanas can as well.

EDIT: golden weapons (from the golden saints) can as well.

I don't use horses often, but when I have, it'd never occurred to me to try using a torch -- besides the company, I'd often saddle up next to a legionnaire for the light

There's a certain vampire I'd spoken with several times before I ever noticed the teeth

I use my torches all the time. Well, let me rephrase...I use them often. When I am dungeon diving, I use night-eye to see wher I am going in dark areas and to spot nasties. Once the dungeon is cleared, I go out of sneak mode and use my torches to go round up all of the loot. So I find torches quite handy indeed, and I always grab the ones I find because I use them so much.

Oblivion: There was something but can't remember. (I will edit later)

Morrowind: Played when came out even before the 2 expansions came. At first I thought I was stupid but turned out there was a new feature added in the expansion or updates. I didn't know and read it here in the forums that the update or expansion adds a new feature.

I discovered this after playing Oblivion. I was in the journal and found current quest (not completed), I was like WTH. This would have made Morrowind easier and I kept reading the pages to see what I did and what I have to do. There was one point I stopped playing because I didn't know what to do in one part of the main quest. I even made a excel spreadsheet for quest: who gave, what to do, where to go and finished. Boy I felt stupid, then read here about the new update and felt better.

Yes, but torches are a lot more fun, especially with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3429.

Or just raise Speed. Doesn't take long before outrunning a horse is possible.

Are you afraid of fire?!
Spoiler
Are you maybe one of those Namira followers who are scared of little torches :P

I use torches all the times because i added the mods that make dungeons and outside very dark
