Do you like the Empire?

So basically, do you like the Empire and what it stands for? This need to dominate and control all neighboring provinces. Although it claims to bring peace through out the land.

The Empire is merely a tradeoff. Either you've got one gigantic political and military entity controlling (and taxing) trade and directing wars in specific directions, or else a lot of petty warlords and local rulers all bickering and fighting, with nobody safeguarding trade. In either case, you've got wars (or a lot of smaller local skirmishes in their place), and setbacks to trade (either legal restricions and taxes or else bandits and "protection" payments). The main "good" point is that it allows long-distance travel in relative safety. The primary down side is that it imposes an outside culture on those it conquers, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the rulers.

In those respects, I see "The Empire" as a "neutral"; it's there, so you learn to either live with it or stay outside of its reach or notice.

I like it for reasons, and I dislike it for reasons.

Spoiler
It's very weakened right now anyway, all of the provinces broke free and they've even having trouble keeping control of the different counties of Cyrodiil.

They are very similar to Britain which is one reason why I like them.
They are supposed to be in anarchy but they seem to be ok.

I don't know if the Empire will be around much longer, we'll see in the next game. It could be the 2nd era all over again.

It svcked. Tamriel's automatically a better setting, without a continent-wide empire and "provinces."

No it doesn't. One empire ruled by a council of people under the control of an emperor is far better than independence. It allows for far more control and a more powerful situation.

This pretty much
Some of my characters like it, others hate it
Myself I see it as a useful explanation for why we get to choose from a wide variety of races and cultures for our PCs

I don't really care, but I think it would be much better without the empire.

Why though? I understand if you played Morrowind where the empire was portrayed as the bad invaders by the natives, however they still let the dunmer just do what they wanted to do.. so their not all that bad.

One of the failings of the Elder Scrolls series, in my opinion, is that they force the player to continually aid the empire. Thanks the gods we don't have to do the main quests.

But regardless, they're still keeping the Dunmer down. The Empire is solely interested in territory, not cultural heritage. Besides, all the Imperial Forts in Vvardenfell are eye-sores. No one wants to look at a square building made out of mortar when there are hollowed out mushrooms to live in.

I too play dunmer and because I help the empire I understand both cultures and am more understanding than imperials. Neat little loop hole that means I like the empire and do not oppose them even if it is my people.

Isnt the Mede Empire in fact a different empire? I thought the Empire founded by Alessia was entirley differant than the one founded by Tiber Septim.
Spoiler

I know that after the Oblivion crisis the Septim empire crumbled under the rule of Ocato and there became many factions of warlords one of them ruled by Titus Mede who decided that he would take over the throne. Right?

The Empire is a lot like the NCR from Fallout New Vegas. The people like them because they keep Caesar's Legion away but they don't like them to take over their towns and establish laws and taxes. People appreciate the Empire for bringing peace and stability but they can be jerks sometimes too.

I like the Empire because it seems pretty damn awesome to have one ruler for an entire continent (something that real world humans have not done).
Im not sure about the Mede Empire though. I will have to wait and see before I have a solid opinion on the current empire.

The Empire is a trade-off, as others mentioned. You get the security of not having nearly as many wars between people, but you also lose some personal freedoms and can potentially lose the cultural identity of your people.

As one who plays mage characters often, I'm not particularly sad that they're gone. [censored] the Mages' Guild and the high-horse they rode in on.

Hmmm... Good point. :)
Yeah, but there've been military take-overs and other kinds of things before with the Emperor still being called the "Emperor" even if they took the throne by force or trickery. But, they still live in the IC and try to maintain control, which is a lot like the old Empire anyway. So if they walk, talk, and look like the old Empire but are technically "New" chances are they're still going to be considered the Empire (or considered a version of it). Abate a very weak and spiraling Empire... but an Empire nonetheless.

With the current situation in the Neo-Empire however, not only Imperials and direct decedents can claim the throne. We could see Orcish, Bosmeri, Altmeri, Dunmeri, even Khajiiti Emperors/Empresses! That'd be a beautiful turn on things... IMHO.

Haha, that would be quite interesting to see a Khajiit emperor. I hope they do something like that in the next game even if it is just a large tribe ruled by a Khajiit. It would be hilarious.

In general, having the empire allowed more stability and protection. Without it, culture-wide vendettas and hatreds are allowed to explode again. I do not expect the daggerfall and high rock regions to be stable, like at the end of DF. The dunmer were driven out of MW by BM. Skyrim is expanding borders, without someone to tell them no. And let us not forget the altmer are trying to reestablish the Aldmeri Domain, and I see it as a force that's not keen on allowing other races, other than mer, to be above the level of a slave, if not engage in a genocidal campaign against humans, due to their following of Shor/Shezarr.

Because having giant fire breathing demons stomping around Tamriel would be so much better, right?

If siding with the Empire was the lesser of two evils against Dagoth Ur or Mehrunes Dagon then I have no problem with the way things turned out.

Going to have to agree, as the alternative looks pretty bad.
