DO NOT build barrels, because they will svck up precious spaces and a completely perfectly placed table to put more stuff in.
Agreed if one is planning on using the room for storage.
I built mine to have that "lived in home" look, so I piled everything the game would give me, including barrels. I don't use the room for storage at all, and like others, mainly for the deck, especially at Lakeview.
I also agree there's no shortage of space in these homes. My goodness, there are more lock boxes I can count, and that's not including additional chests, sacks, and dressers! If one runs out of space in a house, I'd question what they were doing trying to store everything the game has to offer.
Use was important to me, because as my game progressed, I needed easy access. For that, the cellar wins, hands-down for this.
Those two chest placements are awesome. I store "weapons and armor to be crafted" in one, and all the ores and ingots to do so in the other. I also place my enchanted smithing garb and potions in this chest.
A potion's 30 second time limit can be utilized to its maximum proficiency in the cellar. Before hand, it was Whiterun. I've always hated wasting potions (in previous games) just to upgrade a piece or two because I wasn't in the right spot at the right time.
In my second house, whose name I've yet to remember but sits behind Whiterun, has the armory and showroom. I nicknamed it the "museum". LOL. I've put all the bows (bare form) in the game on the racks. There's one spot left, and that's for the daedric bow, once it starts showing up.
The house next to Solitude is... well, let's just say I'll be renting this one out. I doubt I'll find anyone willing to rent from there. It's conveniently located next to nothing.
I sure does explain why that other house was abandoned.
