i always play male, what about you?

it doesn't seem to make difference to the gameplay though, other than aesthetics.

How about a BOTH option seeing as the game is best enjoyed with multiple characters.

EDIT: Cheers, makes more sense now.

2 female, 1 male.

My favoring of female characters is 99% aesthetic reasons.
Especially in Bethesda's games it doesn't matter what gender the player is.

EDIT: My serious characters tend to be male. My main Fallout 3/NV character, depicted in my avatar was my only serious male and also my only serious character where I actively roleplayed to make the world my liking. The females - I don't know why but I end up just making them powerhouses and do every quest I come across.
In Skyrim's case the lone male I now have is my heavily RP'd Thalmor agent. VERY heavily.

EDIT 2: Coming to think of it, maybe that's why I favor females. Playing a male I end up thinking my every action and it very much restricts my gaming experience, especially if I'm roleplaying a member of the villain faction (Enclave, Thalmor). I also spend much more time creating my male appearances - for females I just pick the one I find appealing and I'm off. For the males, I want every inch of their face right, in a nomen est omen style.

Both, depending on what race and class type I'm playing.

I can't bring myself to play a female character. I've already created 4 chars but they are all males. I find it very difficult to roleplay a female.

I usually play males, but every now and then I'll play as female. They're usually some of the more interesting characters I play, because they're uncommon and I therefore want to make the experience 'special'.

The archetypes tend to swing between bad-ass warrior and OP hellmage. I've never played a sneaky, thief-like female character. No interest.

My main combat based character is male, but my thief/assassin is female, mainly because the slighter build look sneakier, and I like the concept of a "rose with a thorn" idea for that sort of build.

My first toon was a male! Who I made thinking he'd be around for a while but after I got a feel for the game, I made a new char; female bosmer pure mage! First time playing as a female in a TES game!

My first character is always a woman, the rest are usually female too with the exception of male mages that I sometimes feel like playing. It's just a personal preference, I don't have any difficulties roleplaying a male after all those games that didn't give me a choice of gender ;)

It does have an effect on some races due to different height/weight which is used by some game play mechanics for determining other things like move speed and physical attack damage but that's only for Argonian, Bosmer, Breton, Khajiit and just a very very minor difference for Redguard.

I switch based on the character to which I am playing, generally I work it into who I think the character should be.

I only create a male when I have a specific concept in mind, and I usually consider a female alternative version to those anyway.

Most games like this my first character is a male. Then if I decide that I want to do it all again, then i will most likely choose female to switch it up a bit.

Anyway back on topic, I play a male ingame.

Mostly female, although occasionally I'll make a male character. My "serious" characters are always female.

Currently a dark elf male. My next play through though, will be a female. Going to have a completely different play style. Maybe pure mage type.

Always play male as I am male. I'm honestly creeped out by males "always" playing female characters. (I can understand it on like a second playthrough as long as it has a different effect in the game. Just for experience sake.)

Both. I tried a few Female Nords once though, couldn't take it. There's just something too fake and supermodel looking about them. Female Khajiit, Argonian, and Elves are all good though. Except for Bosmer. Nothing in the game beats the default Male Bosmer face. Redguard, Nord, and Imperial males all work.

Infact the only race I can't play is Breton. The males all have girly voices and shouts, and the females all look like Bridget Jones.

My main character is a Female Khajiit Wizard. Does it have anything to do with http://prequeladventure.com/? Maaaaaaaaybe.

Edit: Man capitalization of male/female is all over the place.

Why do people who have never held a sword play as knights? Why do they play as mages? Do they feel they possess magical powers in real life?
People play as females in role-playing games because they like to imagine how a female would behave in certain situations. Same reason why I like to roleplay a thief when in reality I would never steal anything.

Also, remember that some players are female themselves, so playing a female char is a natural choice for them.

As far as I can remember, I've never played as a female character in any game that has character creation.
