Do you remember ...

Post » Fri Jan 08, 2010 1:46 pm

My character was out for a walk today around Chorrol, admiring the small farms and beautiful streams added by Unique Landscapes. Suddenly a memory came back - when the area around Chorrol was wilderness and filled with Viper's Bugloss and she used to spend a day collecting it by hand.

This brought back a flood of memories, of things that have changed with mods, most for the better, but maybe some not so much.

Oblivion before mods ....

... when you had to pick every single ingredient by hand (no Gather Ye Rosebuds).

... when every animal you saw in the woods was a wolf (no MMM).

... when you could charge through Vilverin at level 1 (no OOO or FCOM).

... when the first amulet your pure Breton mage made at the enchanting alter was NOT a fortify fatigue (no Relistic Fatigue).

... when had to count experience points, not sheep, in your sleep (no nGCD/Progress).

Well, you get the idea. Just a thread to remember Oblivion ... before we changed everything.

Nice idea, GothGirl as a more noobie mod user, I remember when swimming my Khajiit would not see a single fish.

... when you'd only enter 'dungeons' to fight boring enemies scaled to your level with generic loot scaled to your level, instead of hoping to find something interesting?

... when every instance of a monster always looked exactly the same?

I still can, and frankly, that's the way i like it :)

I got Oblivion quite late so there were all sorts of mods already available; i have better cities, unique landscapes, Progress, MMM, RBP, nGCD, BMS, etc., etc. It is quite diffrent, but IMHO, much more enjoyable.

Fallout 3 however i bought on release day. I remember what it was like, and seeing what it is with FWE, MMM, EVE and many others is very different from the original. But again more enjoyable.

Maybe i should buy a Oblivion for my PS3 too and see if i can enjoy it when i can't mod it :D

Daggerfall?

Anyway, I still play Oblivion without mods. PC players thinking they're the only people in existence, grumble, grumble, grumble... :P

...when you couldn't finish a combat by beheading your opponent, or stabbing him while he's in the ground.

...when Oblivion was full of mysterious floating rocks, trees, mushrooms, and thousands of other bugs.

Mine looked worse, actually, and, being a woman, had that hideous body shape. Vainalla oblivion was sooo unforgiving to women.

@ Seti18 .... what are you complaining about? Bethesda made the game you [for consoles ... then migrated it to the PC].

Besides, don't you really want Oblivion on your PC? Don't you .... reallly ... [deep, gravelly voice] "Come, Luke, join the dark side ..."

It's like when you go buy a hamburger, see? And they put stuff on it. Cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, ketchup, onions. And then you sit there, drinking your Coke and thinking, wow, this burger is great! In fact, it's fantastic! This could be the best burger I've ever had!

Well, Oblivion is the 1/4 lb. of ground beef. All that stuff that makes the 1/4 lb. of beef taste great? That's mods ....

When the game spammed endless messages on your screen telling you you'd entered a new cell (no No Load mod).

mmmmmm......burgers.........

Or, like when you go to a hotdog stand, and get to pick and choose your toppings. The hotdog is the game, the toppings are the mods.

...okay, now I'm hungry again. Thank you Dani :P

I can remember it very easily. That's probably because the 360 can't use mods and I don't think ES5 will let us either... you people on PC are lucky... Good thing that Oblivion is an awesome game even without mods.

I always eat my hamburger plain anyways ;)

I have never used mods....probably never will. Too complicated and cause too many problems for me. I'm happy with my Vanilla game, thank you.

The truth is that Oblivion is the hamburger made by Bethesda King or McBethesda's(take your pick), but mods are the toppings offered to you by some strange person in a dark alleyway who has no connection to Bethesda. Most of the time, said toppings are not very good. :P

(Truly, I'm joking.)

I remember when butterflies only appeared in certain places and fairies were nowhere to be seen :( now they are everywhere! :twirl:

I remember playing the game more instead of modding in the CS constantly.

I remember never using torches because I could always see ok in the dark. Now night eye and torches are a necessity.

I remember dying and reloading. Now I wake up in an inn with items and gold having been stolen from me :ninja:

I remember going anywhere whenever I want. Now I have risk vs reward.

Well, most of us get our mods from TesNexus and Planet Elderscrols (and few other sites i've not used). That's more like a building across the street of McBethesda that houses thousands of seasoning sellers, and each vendors product is clearly rated. And my toppings are excellent, all 234 of them ;)

I don't use most of those mods but I use others.

Unmodded Oblivion is very difficult for me to tolerate on console (or PC, if I bothered), much more so than Morrowind (which I can at least tolerate unmodded on console, although I prefer the aesthetic mod changes by far).

One thing that Bethesda needs to do is include the Harvest Flora effect. Both Morrowind and Oblivion (vanilla) do not change the flora when stuff is harvested. Not only is this very breaking for roleplaying, it also makes playing alchemist characters more difficult in a very bad way, at least if you are playing conservative and collective (collecting everything and using stuff with max efficiency). Moreover, it seems to be a relatively simply change to make, at least based on the fact that the Harvest Flora mod has been around for quite a long time now and doesn't seem to be something that messes up the game in any way, or places undue stress on systems.

My very first character in Oblivion looked just like Tom Cullen from "The Stand." It was hilarious, especially since I didn't do it on purpose. xD

I remember actually finishing the game! Well as much as you can finish it. The main quest anyway.

Since mods, I haven't completed it since LOL ... too much other stuff to do!
