"You should have acted"...

"You should have acted" This is how Esbern introduces us to the present conflict in Skyrim. I've heard it dozens of times, because I've watched the trailer dozens of times. Now I've started to wonder what it actually means. What didn't, or did, we do that could have halted the dragons? What was the catalyst?

Perhaps it's from a scene where Esbern is talking to the Greybeards.

Bethesda is the catalyst. They could have prevented it...but they didn't. And I'm happy with their choice.

This. I don't think Esbern was talking to the player. They are totally oblivious they're even Dragonborn before the main plot kicks off.

You should have preordered. It's already here! The trailer told of its release date.

Well, if you're up to par on your Mundus lore or have read the http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nu-mantia-intercept, the Nerevarine's actions in stopping Dagoth Ur in Morrowind also deactivated the Heart of Lorkhan and Red Tower, helping to weaken the barriers that contained oblivion. Some speculate the Mythic Dawn to have even anticipated this event and took full advantage of it in starting the Oblivion crisis.

I think it's safe to say that all of our previous Elder Scrolls characters collectively screwed over the fourth era. :P

Nothing could prevented it, but preparations could have been made. I'm thinking the "you" means Imperial authorities. Esbern is a Blade, after all.

That sounds about right. Not sure who else could have acted and prevented it. The Blades are defunct and being hunted to extinction, the Empire is still clawing its way back from the aftermath of the Crisis, Morrowind.. dunno what they could've done; I doubt any faction there could have done anything. Greybeards are about the only group that makes sense.

Yeah I thought this might be it, because I was under the impression that the civil war was one of the events, along with the opening and closing of Oblivion, that was prophesied to lead up to the return of Alduin. Maybe if the civil war had been prevented so would the dragon prophecy all together.

Perhaps it's from a scene where Esbern is talking to the Greybeards.

This is an interesting new idea to me. I wonder what he could be referring to when he talks about acting on their behalf.

He's referring to the Dragons.

I know XD

The 'act' is finding the Dragonborn. He's reminding them they've lost time, because they were complacent.

Yeah! Thats fantastic, Skyrim is basically the culmination of the entire ES series, and thus the most legendary :D

That wasn't the last scroll.

The mood fits a prologue scene. Esbern's among the Greybeards, and they're arguing over the dragon threat. He's found a Dragonborn, which the Greybeards hadn't done. By making the speech, Esbern adds drama to the reveal. The next scene is of our 'execution.'

How much scrolls are there? Like 5, right? Since there are 5 Elder Scroll games...but I'm just guessing.

he says we should have acted. it means that they should have got an army to stop the dragons attack. "they are already here, the elder scrolls told of there comeing, no one wanted to belive it." now they need a dragon born to stop them all, they are all scared

I'm pretty sure that if you look around at the walls of the Library, there are scrolls lining the walls. I assume those were all Elder Scrolls.
