IMO, these were probably the two best quests in Oblivion. Do you all think any Skyrim quests will be able to equal or top these?

  • Whodunit?
  • Where Spirits Have Lease

Whodunit was an amazing quest for the time the game was out. I think, now that they redid the engine they should remake somehting extremely similar, I would love to see that. But yes I think they will come up with something that is better than that. I don't even recognize the other quest.

I really hope so, but I think both of those quests set a high bar, along with my second favorite quest - PARANOIA

I had never imagined a character in a videogame could actually infect me with its sense of paranoia, but Glarthir was a very well-written character, with awesome dialogue. Sure enough, he had me believing his lies and I spent hours just freaking watching those Surilie brothers dig in the mud on their vineyard. I was totally convinced they were up to something suspicious!

I actually found the Oblivion Assassin quests were some of the most enjoyable in the game. They are the most memorable for me and really made the game.

I can only hope that Skyrim will be just as innovative and clever.

Really? I just broke into his house since he was obviously a nut, stole his stash of gold, and never reported to him again. :D

LOL that bastard had me totally convinced!

I ignored him for a long time, probably years when I first started playing Oblivion, but eventually, during my recent playthrough I decided to talk with the man at his secret meeting spot and see what he was so upset about.

After I started spying on NPCs for him, gradually I got more and more convinced.

You misssed out on a really fun quest. My two favorite quests of all time, probably any game are Whodunit? and Paranoia. A close third would be Tranquility Lane in FO3.

Where Spirits Have Lease was okay, but it should've given more depth into the curse and the backstory of the family.

I agree that PARANOIA was a superb quest.

Really? I'd be willing to put money on the idea that you've said that just because they're from Oblivion and not your beloved Morrowind.

But yes, I would love to see quests like that. In particular Whodunit. I created a save inside the manor just so I could reload and play through it every way I could find. I seriously hope they've put something like this into Skyrim, as it made a nice change from some of the "Go here, kill X, come back" format of some of the quests.

I loved whodunit, but I liked all the DB quests. The other quest that stands out for me was the Daedric quest from Vaermina in Arkved's Tower. Loved that one.

Paranoia and whodunit WERE awesome. The whole DB quest line was, for the most part. Especially revenge on that Dumbmer Fetcher in the jail.

Spirts have Lease - not so much... First time I did it, with my first character, I got destroyed by the creature in the crypt. (A lich) My character had a major in Alchemy and relied on swords for combat, not magic.

What a disaster that was.

Paranoia was quite a good quest, but I had a feeling quite early on that Glarthir was a can short of a six pack.

The most memorable for me were "Through A Nightmare, Darkly" and the three Umbacano 'Collector' quests, especially the final showdown at High Fane.

I want to see quests that have results that are sad, or otherwise difficult to deal with. Things where, no matter what you do, someone is hurt. Side quests traditionally are a mundane or otherwise unremarkable affair, but I want to see that changed up.

One of the recent games I have played, called Nier, had truly wrenching writing. Here is an http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucXF8DZJ8cI&feature=player_detailpage#t=374s...from a sidequest in that game that began as unremarkable, though beware spoilers if you ever intend to play it.

Paranoia was indeed a very good quest. I liked most of the Thieves Guild questline. The quest when you break Amusie out of jail, and you find the secret passage to the 'pale lady'. :0 The Ultimate heist was also epic.

It's an underappreciated game, though it does have many faults. The gameplay/graphics/flow of the game is not very good, but the story, music, characters, and voice acting I personally found amazing...but obviously tragic through and through.

Where Spirits Have Lease was okay, but it should've given more depth into the curse and the backstory of the family.

Whodunit was a bunch of squandered potential. There weren't nearly as many options as it pretended to have and you got the exact same outcome whether you tricked people into killing one another (really just the last two) or picked them off one by one. The characters were all fairly one-dimensional as well.

As for Where Spirits Have Lease: it was pretty much as unremarkable as any other sidequest in the game. I hope that the crappiest quests in Skyrim are better than either of these.

They really just need to improve upon individual character writing, and combine it with better voice acting/line delivery and mood setting. Good writing can't always make a side quest more than what it is at heart, but writing can change the way it impacts you.

The example I gave above from Nier, was the culmination of nothing more than a series of "fed-ex" quests, however the writing and story told from it made it difficult to forget.
