Do you think Fallout 4 can surpass Skyrim?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:36 am

This thread has the potential to be closed because it has a "vs" flavor to it but since the door has been left wide open well here's my two cents.

Frankly, I find all this immensely silly. Who cares really from a consumer stand point if a game does financially better than another? This issue SHOULD matter mostly to developers/publishers who really need to know where they are standing within not only other games in the industry but other games in their own company. Furthermore, the media score is quite misleading because a game that has a 95% score doesn't mean the game is necessarily good(or left the buyer satisfied). Look at me. I bought Skyrim; I was part of that great score that Skyrim has, but did I like the game? HELL NO. I was terribly disappointed with Skyrim and I never finished it.

Nevertheless, it is nice to hear the level of "success" a game has achieved but to put our fan boxing gloves to argue the matter like if we have something to gain from it all is truly ridiculous - unless you're a die-hard fan who wants to see your game destroy everyone's out of the water.

I personally think FO4 will do great, better than Skyrim. But if it doesn't, I highly doubt FO fans would mind at all if they are enjoying the game tremendously. I think by the looks of the videos we have seen, FO4 looks as the most advanced Beth game so far thanks to their on-going understanding of the Creation Engine. Not to mention that for a TES player as myself, what we'll see in FO4 is a good glimpse of what to expect from TES6.

I don't think it's an issue of "quality." I'd say though that Fallout 4 has broader appeal than Witcher 3. Clearly Witcher 3 serves a particular audience extremely well. I think though that it appeals more to men than women (not saying that there aren't many women who love it) and that has cost it sales. My husband and I are buying Fallout 4 (and new PCs to play it on), but haven't felt motivated to buy Witcher 3. It's hard to put it into words, but I think fundamentally it's a matter of world outlook, and we just enjoy Bethesda's world view more than CD Projekt's. We both played (and enjoyed the first Witcher, but didn't get far in the second, and haven't bought the third).

I don't think a video game not having a playable female Player Character (PC) will make it lose sales.

Grand Theft Auto V for singleplayer has only 3 playable characters and Grand Theft Auto Online only lets you play as a female or a male character.

Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 54+ million copies so far.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 6+ million copies so far.

Cyberpunk 2077 might interest you though. Cyberpunk 2077 will be a open world RPG video game with fully customizable female and male Player Characters (PC's), with guns like in the Fallout video games and all kinds of electronics.

There was also a topic on the Cyberpubk 2077 forums, where some people asked CD Projekt RED to develop Cyberpubk 2077 like The Elder Scrolls video games or any video games developed by Bethesda Game Studios so that the Player Character (PC) can pick up and drop any items he or she sees in front of their face. A CD Projekt RED employee responded and said they will look into that and try it.

This was back in late 2013? Or early 2014 when I read it. I am currently since 2014 staying in the dark about Cyberpunk 2077 don't want to read any more information 3 years after CD Projekt RED revealed it is starting o get my interests down and just waiting for it to get released for sale.

But the Fallout video games I don't think would really be enjoyable to play if they only had male Player Characters (PC's).

So Cyberpunk 2077 might be the video game to match Fallout 4 or any other video games developed by Bethesda Game Studios.

Looking forward to seeing what CD Projekt Red will do with Cyberpunk 2077.

Now if we could just get CD Projekt Red or Bethesda to do a full scale Shadowrun game.

It's the first "Next-Gen" Bethesda game and it has gunplay. I have no doubt that alone will appeal to a lot of different groups of gamers, some who like fantasy, and a lot who don't. Not everyones into magic and elves. A lot of people, like myself, only like Game of Thrones because it throws most of the common fantasy tropes out the window.

I think Fallout 4 will outsell Skyrim over time. A lot of modders will make the move from Skyrim to Fallout 4 because it's the next big thing in modding. If mods are finally made available to the console crowd (to some degree) then console sales may see the same level of longevity as pc sales.

On the contrary, I think a "TES VI" would greatly surpass the sales of Skyrim. There's a big demand for TES VI, and the longer the wait for the title, the greater that demand likely will be. Unless of course the wait goes on for decades or something, anyway. I'm still not convinced that TES VI is Bethesda Game Studios' next game, though. Quite a bit of talk lately about how they have other ideas and don't want to just cycle between TES and Fallout. If I recall correctly, Pete Hines flat out said to not expect BGS' next game to be TES VI.

Anyway, Fallout 4 will likely surpass Skyrim quickly, if not right out the gate. Their next game will also likely be a smash hit as well, even if it turns out to be something other than TES VI (though TES VI is still a valid and likely possibility mind you, I'm just warning that it's not written in stone that BGS' next game absolutely is TES VI).

Could you please let us know WHEN and WHERE did Hines said those words?
What you are saying is completely false and those words don't exist.

If fallout 4 is open enough, I think it will outsell Skyrim. What makes Skyrim great, is its freedom in gameplay and character building. And in the long run, that is what keeps bringing new players in. Mods adds to the longevity, and further opens the game both in terms of size as well as increasing market size, as it appeals to a more diverse group of gamers.

I enjoy hearing and seeing a game that I enjoy playing doing well in the general market. Specifically though, a successful game (typically) leads to more iterations - and this is why I like to know whether a game I'm playing is doing well.

I think every previous Bethesda game was surpassed by their next games, in terms of popularity of course and nor the game quality.

I think Fallout 4 will be a better game then Skyrim. And of course will sell more.

He didn't say those words but he did say we won't be expecting Tes VI for a VERY long time so it wouldn't surprise me too much if they had another game planned in between the end of the Fallout DLC and the announcement of Tes VI.

Yes I know about those words. But to translate that into what Dark Master is saying is as logical as to translate it into whatever else.

They said the same for another TES games or even Fallout 4.

The most normal situation would be to see TES VI in 2017-2018. But well, maybe they will leave their money maker and will go with a new IP not knowing what would happen and the next TES will be here en 2025. To me, it sounds mad.

Anyway, in the Elder Scrolls subforum there is a lot of posts regarding this. Feels old to me now tbh.

There must be a limit though, where the sales will have reached the plateau. Some people already consider Skyrim stretched well beyond normal sales for its genre. The casual buyers are more volatile than the established fanbase. I think the most relevant evaluation can be made within the life cycle of a single game, for instance how many of vanilla Skyrim buyers have returned to buy the expansions.

There are also people who feel disappointed by Bethesda Game Studios and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with what they did with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

I'm one of those people and I feel disappointed so far of all of the information that I have read about Fallout 4 and have not per-ordered Fallout 4 yet.

I'm also not going to purchase Fallout 4 when it gets released for sale and watch people upload YouTube videos of themselves playing Fallout 4 so I can see how much more content or features Bethesda Game Studios added or removed from Fallout 4 that I like that Fallout 3 has and Fallout: new Vegas has.

As it stands for me right now vanilla The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim without mods bores me and I have no enjoyment or fun playing it.

Companions not being killable is 1 thing that made me not pre-order Fallout 4 at all.

Next feature if I see that Fallout 4 has regenerative health magically after you finish being in combat instead of eating food, resting, sleeping or using stimpacks is another feature that keeps me from pre-ordering video games or purchasing video games after they have released for sale.

Eventually I might, I might just end up purchasing Fallout 4 because mods add the features I want and remove the features I don't want, but that will be moths later like 6 months later or even 1 year later to years later.

I think that Fallout 4 will easily surpass Skyrim in sales. What does Skyrim and Fallout 4 have that others don't have? They're developed by Bethesda Game Studios. Don't underestimate the power of a very good and consistent reputation that is earned over time. Bethesda have it, Blizzard have it and Rockstar have it. BioWare and Bungie have arguably had a slight hiccup but they're very, very strong devs and all of them reap the benefits of making great games consistently. The Witcher games CD Projekt Red are heading in the same direction, reputation is earned over time.

If Fallout 4 outsells skyrim it won't be 'easily'. People are underestimating just how prodigious the sales figures of Skyrim are and the disadvantages that Fallout 4 is facing by comparison.

There's about half the consoles on the market that can even play Fallout 4 as opposed to Skyrim during 2011.

If Fallout 4 is going to outsell Skyrim it will need possibly double the attachment rate, considering that there's around 30 - 40 million ps4s and Xbox one's combined in comparisons to their being around 70 - 80 million ps3s and 360s sold during Skyrim's release.

I also don't think there's a metric that would suggest that Fallout is a more popular series than TES.

Skyrim will obviously fare better because it's the popular, commercial theme with dragons and wizards and warriors and swords and magic. Fallout won't sale as much, but it's still better in my eyes.

It was confirmed by Bethesda and many articles can be found about it.

http://gamerant.com/skyrim-sells-20-million/

And Time: http://time.com/1875/at-20-million-copies-sold-skyrim-is-in-the-top-20-bestselling-games-of-all-time/

I'm quite sure it made the Beth blog as well but I didn't go looking for it there. Just a memory.

Yes, provided Fallout 4 isn't gamesas's first lemon since... what, Battlespire? Redguard?

Remember- "Fallout fans" isn't exclusive to "Elder Scrolls fans". So, all it has to do is more-or less attract most of the old fans and bring in new ones. Simple, since each gamesas game prior seems to have done exactly that.
