Do you think fast travel as cheating?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:25 am

When you start the game, you cannot fast-travel anywhere. In order to fast-travel to a location, you have to make the journey to the location in the first place. How's that cheating yourself of the journey? It is not that you are going to find completely different things every time you walk back and forth from one point to another...

This, so much this. I'd rather not walk back to town after every 2-3 dungeons to unload gear, then walk back. I haven't missed any exploration, in fact I'm exploring more by using fast travel. I go back to town, dump gear in my chest and sell the rest, fast travel back to the last dungeon I did and start my exploration from there. All new locations to explore. I'd rather that than "explore" the same static path over and over.

I love people who say "I'm not really into the immersion thing".

Why the hell do you play video games then?

Maybe they are into the immersion, but not enough to find it worthwile to walk around for 30 minutes to get from A to B when they could do it with a few clicks.

Nah. But I don't always use it over short distances...even though I did once fast travel from my Breezehome to Dragonsreach, just to use the Arcane Enchanter there :D

Nah of course its not cheating. Any ingame feature is not cheating. And in any case, who would you be cheating in a single player game?

I don't use it myself, I believe the travel to be part of the gameplay for me. For other people, the destination is the gameplay. Each to their own :)

What really, is the point of having a weight system if you fast travel? Just load up, exit the cave, fast travel home, unload and fast travel back. It's like Diablo's town portal spell.

Playing this way makes decision-making even less a part of the game, reduces depth and, in my opinion, enjoyment of the game. It just becomes all about gathering loot.

There's a reason why so many people have said that they find the game more enjoyable when they stop fast traveling.

Why the rush to get from A to B? Only have so many hours left before your copy of the game self-deletes?

Dont consider it cheating but it does break the immersion for me a bit. I only use it once in awhile when I need to quickly get something over with. For e.g.: when its 3 AM and I want to turn in a quest before sleeping.

I try not to use it, but i have used it 2 or 3 times with my current character prior to buying my own horse. Now i have a horse, the travel time is reduced, so i use a combination of my horse & the carrage service.

When it's so easy to avoid using it, there's no point removing it.

Curious about what people think about fast travel...I have tried not to use it but I'm slipping into using it now and then...

Where is the "It's not cheating, but I don't use it" poll option? I think it's fine for others to use it if it makes the game more enjoyable for them, but haven't yet wanted to use it myself.

You are missing the "No, it is not cheating, but I still don't use it." choice, which would be my choice.

I avoid using it, because as others have said, interesting things can happen and be found while moving around the world, but i'm glad it's there to bypass the infurtiating NPC escort missions and get to home quickly with a single potion of strength while carrying too much. If it wasn't there i would just "coc WhiterunBreezehome", and that would be cheating :lmao:

Kids with ADD = fast travel was required otherwise they wouldnt have the willpower to actually play the game. If you dont play the game to explore then go play a linear game, as you are missing over 50% of what makes ES games what they are...

And yes it is cheating. I have 60 hours in so far and have never fast travelled once.

Given the chance, I'll use a wagon instead. That's a good compromise, in my book...you're spending gold to travel safely.

Also, fast travel has it's own drawbacks...you can miss out on discovering places and on experience/treasure from encounters along the way. In other words, it can slow down your character progression and make you weaker if "overused". I feel that this is a good balance.

If I don't feel like hauling ass across the map for half an hour just to finish a quest, I shouldn't have to. You do at least have to explore places before travelling them, something Oblivion fubbed up with the major cities.

Then you arent playing the game with the right mindset. If you are playing the game solely to grind out quests I feel sorry for you.

I keep 3-5 quests up at once and make a trip around the world or large area a fluid, natural thing. One thing takes me to another. Why would a person go out, do one thing and come right back to that person. Thats something that has always bothered me about other games, no real person would travel like that.

See, that's your mindset for playing Skyrim. Skyrim is full of choices and gameplay style is one of them. If I want to have ketchup with macaroni, I'll do it because I want to. There's nothing wrong about it, it's just not the way you personally enjoy your macaroni.

No there isnt anything wrong with it, I am just saying your mindset doesnt fit the style of game, and that is why something that should be enjoyed is a burden for you.

Its like forcing RP into Dark Souls, and then complaining its too hard and death breaks immersion :D If I am going to force my playstyle unto a game despite the designers intentions I should expect to be dissapointed and realize it is my fault for being impatient or too dense to realize what the game is actually about. Just doesnt make sense.

At this point I use fast travel quite a lot. More than I anticipated at least. Part of it is because I''ve had a couple of times where I explored and came past this random cave, cleared it and hours later I got a quest that required me to clear out the same cave. I don't want to clear out the same caves just yet.
But after beating the main quest and the companions and thieves guild, I do plan on just walking around and discovering all locations on the map I might have missed.

I find myself using fast travel mainly because its just there, usually to travel between citys to sell loot, but it kinda ruins the immersion a little bit because your just teleporting to your next quest and not exploring and finding things ect. id love a mod to disable it or at least limit it to once or twice a day so it doesnt feel like your cheating..

why do you need a mod can you not limit yourself?????

"Cheating"? An intentional feature that works as intended isn't "cheating" by any definition of the word, unless that feature is literally cheating, like cheat codes. Which fast travel is not.

Glad to see the majority of pollsters agree with me, despite the apparent abundance of whiners on the forums. Why must the phrase "vocal minority" be so true?

Frankly I don't believe it is possible to cheat in a single player game. It exists simply to bring enjoyment to whoever happens to be playing it. Do whatever lets you enjoy the game most. Sometimes I don't have very long to play and I would like to be able to do a whole quest before I go to work. If I didn't use fast travel I might spend the whole time crossing the world map. Sometimes I will take the time to travel on foot when I have the time and I'm in the mood for a little stroll (or especially when I'm looking for alchemy ingredients). A number of times I have been rewarded with interesting encounters or places so I'm fairly satisfied with this mixture of using fast travel and not.

I try note to use it as u find better gear by exploring on your travels, problem is a lot of folks have issues with the game crashing, i even have it freeze on xbox, fast travel makes turning in quests easy and the auto saves are a plus if you are afraid of loosing your progress

Fun, entertainment, challenge, story..... all sorts of things.

Meanwhile, all the random (contradictory, odd, irrational) stuff that people have spewed out in response to the question "What is immersion", are things I don't believe I've ever experienced. In thirty years of playing video games.

(Certainly, none of the things they keep saying "kill their immersion" have bothered me. Having the game give me feedback, or have a HUD, or anything that "reminds me I'm playing a game" aren't a problem - because I know I'm playing a game - it's what I meant to do when I sat down and ran the silly thing.)
