Do you think Skyrim lived up to the hype?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:00 pm

The game takes most of my free gaming time. However, I still wish there were useable carts and looms, lol.

I am still playing rather slowly, walking everywhere, exploring etc. There is still have much to do and see.

As a result, I am not even half-way through yet, with my first character, Sibyl, and I play a lot.

Experimentation with a couple of the earlier mods has been interesting, and am waiting for the release of the Construction Kit.

It will be interesting to see what some of the good modders create.

With respect to the hype, the game deliveres most of what was discussed by the devs.

Some of the hype was generated by fans, in my opinion.

Kind of. It is a pretty good game, but it's still got the typical bethesda issues. I do miss some of the options we had in oblivion, but I don't miss stats.

Oh yeah, I sure do. I'm having a blast and really happy with the game. I'll be a lot happier when these bugs that we all knew were coming at release are fixed so the forums won't be filled with constant complaining and spoilers in the wrong forum but I'm very happy. I'm really looking forward to January with the Creation Kit and all the mods that will be created too. I want to try more of them this time around. I never got to do that with Oblivion. :)

Far from it, the dungeons may have pretty stories and sequences within them which is what most people point towards when praising Skyrim for anything else than its graphics and I will give them that. There are some nice dungeons in Skyrim. But even they fail where they end up being linear and character development is so restricted due to the lack of options especially in the magic department that Skyrim ends up being far from an equal to the hype it garnered.

I went into Skyrim with the intentions of making a character tyee I had made in Morrowind and Oblivion and I had hoped it would be even better this time around and that Bethesda had fixed some of the issues with my character. But instead I ended up having to scrap half of my character as I learned http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1302338-a-small-observation-on-the-amount-of-spells-in-the-game/ The best thing that Bethesda did for my character was to work wielding a shield into being more interesting but else there is little I have gained with Skyrim.

Guild quests are short justified by having hundreds of radiant quests which are most all "kill X of creature" or "delve into dungeon and kill draugr/falmer/bandits" and you can interact with NPC's even less than before. Want to ask a guard for directions ? Sorry, all you get are sarcastic sweetroll comments and sad tales about arrows being taken to the knee. But the socializing part of the game was already dying with Oblivion, Skyrim just shoveled the gravel over the grave.

Is Skyrim a good game though ? Yes, it is a good game, one of my top 10 games in fact, however it's not a good TES, and out of the TES games I have played considering the lack of choice and freedom in this game I'd have to say it's the worst one out of the TES series. Doesn't mean it's a bad game though as I say, all the TES games are good, but Skyrim is just not very good for a TES game. At least not when it comes to what I'm looking for when I load up a TES game.

Define "hype"

Do you mean you got brainwashed by Beth's marketing division until you thought that if you bought Skyrim it'd bring world peace or something?

I didn't listen to the marketing division. I had a pretty good idea what kind of game Beth was going to release, and they exceeded my expectation. Use your head and don't listen to marketing divisions and [censored] when anticipating your games, and this won't happen.

God, some people are so stupid.

wall of text.

The question was "does it live up to the hype"?
The answer was "it exceeds it"

According to the hype presented by internet and tv ads and official trailers.

Hype defined: to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily

Yes. The strong points are even stronger than I expected, the weaker points are as weak as I expected. All in all I think the series is going forward with Skyrim.

I like it and I'm enjoying the game just like the Oblivion. Few minor bugs but will be fixed. No problems so far.

Lives up to the hype easily. It's actually better than I expected in some parts.

So yeah, it has been out almost a month now, and i think it is even better than what all the hype pointed it out to be.

What do you guys think and why?

EDIT: Where's my poll? I thought i put one in :(

Nothing can ever live up to hype. Nothing can match long anticipation. I'm so out of the gaming loop I didn't know one was coming out until the trailers hit.

I was planning on giving it a pass until a friend assured me they'd fixed the worst Oblivion problems.

I'm very pleased. Skyrim is a big mixed bag with some things that are awesome, some that are awful, and some oversights. I feel like I'm getting my mlbey's worth but there are certainly ways to improve the game.

What's a 10/10 game? Soul Calibre on Dreamcast. Perfection. Any sequel would just screw things up and they proceeded to do just that.

And by my own terminology, you can have quibbles with a game which are matters of opinion. Game-breaking problems can't be debated because they are clearly ruinous to the game. Broken leveling in Oblivon is a great example.

Of course it did not live up to the hype. It couldn't ... was totally overhyped.
Also I have to say, most magazines gave it way too good ratings. The reason for this is probably, that it's unique in its approach and something many people (including me) wish there would be more of. So it's some kind of worshipping the idea, even if the actual game is flawed in many ways.

But even knowing all this, and having a much smaller hype in my head, it did not even lived up to that hype.

After Fallout3 I really expected Skyrim to offer a much better leveling and exploring experience.
Both things are denied by very bad design-decisions regarding some of the skills and perks.

I'm also especially dissapointed about the quests.
In my opinion Oblivion had good quests and Fallout3 even topped that by offering a lot of decision-possibilities in almost every quest.
In the Skyrim quests you rarely can make any decisions. And comparing the Dark Brotherhood quests of Oblivion to Skyrim, I have to say, those of Oblivion were much much better so far.

Also the whole feeling is dissapointing in some ways. I miss a forest. Every mountain looks the same.
I also expected bigger cities with more people.

It's still a good game, and it also does make a lot of things better than Oblivion (I was positively surprised by some of the dungeons and all the traps and little puzzles for example), but all in all I'm not even sure, if "modded Skyrim" will be better than "modded Oblivion".
So yeah ... I really expected more. It didn't live up to my hype, even though my hype was much smaller than the general hype.
Still a good game, still worth playing, but wasting so much potential, that it makes me sad. :(

It only depends on how hyped you were. If you're young, you're easily hyped and since the marketing was great, it's natural it's a no for a lot of people.

For me, it lived up to the hype, I love this game and it's exactly what I expected. I suspect I wasn't as hyped as other people though.

Nope, because:

Yes, PS3 and 360 have reached a good place of parity….framerate, fidelity, etc. The PS3 version is getting a ton of attention.

No, the game needed more polishing and more work on some things they promised but implemented partially.

I didnt pay any attention to the hype whatsoever. Infact I barely even saw any of it or any advertising for the game here. So its fine for me, however I do think is has not lived up to its potential. As an avid Oblivion gamer I thought this game was going to be on a larger scale with even more to it than Oblivion. Oblivion has so much content that I simply was never able to do it all, and I infact have never completed the MQ for it. I got wrapped up in closing gates, side quests and incedental mission every time I played it.

Skyrim has no such overarching gameplay mechanic that strives to keep you busy, like the Oblivon gates did. Thats whats really missing from the game. A real time sink mission that if you can spend months finishing if you chose to. Sadly the closest we get to that is book fetching or thievery missions. Not exactly inspiring confidence or the will to play more. So for me Skyrim is a good game but has not lived up to its potential or the previous titles level of content.

To me:

Skyrim represents an amazing first impression. However, many stones turned reveal missed opportunities, botching and a certain lack of vision.

Its a great game, I'm loving my time in Skyrim, but I can't help seeing what it could have (realistically) been with some extra effort and no asinine release date to rush into.

I avoided hype from the game, I wasnt hyped at all. I am still disspointed with it. I thought they learned from previous games, but nope. Look t vamprism, its WORSE. Being a werewolf is actually a nerf button at higher levels. The dungeons are linear, always aconveniently collapsed tunnel. Mages guild SIX (or so) quests. I had to learn firebolt to get in than boom, archmage.

I could go on, but this game is just average. Thats being kind ignoring the bugs and the failed potential. E.g No oppertunity to kill the thives guild.

Totally lived up to the hype. The game is a highlight of this Console generation. It is a masterpiece. It's my favorite game, period. The high ratings the game has gotten, the sales the game has gotten, the number of people playing the game, all point to a game that lived up to its hype. To say the game is anything but a smashing success would be wrong.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, though. Not every game is going to be your cup of tea.

I saw some trailers, but I didn't see the big hype
I began with Oblivion like...2-3 months before Skyrim was released
Loved Oblivion, although I hear of a lot of people that it svcks
'If Skyrim is just like Oblivion, I'm gonna get it' was my thought
And my goodness, did it deliver for me
Next to annoying bugs, like crashes, it's great

Wonderful game. I am having a blast.

Never got into the hype to begin with, nor have I played the earlier games so I am not tainted wishing for "what was in this or that game"

I by no means am saying it is perfect, but I can see me putting many more hours into it.
