Do you think Skyrim should've just waited for the next gener

Post » Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:24 am

Seriously, Skyrim had been delayed long enough as it is. We don't even know when the next generation is coming out, unless you count Nintendo Cafe.

It is simply unrealistic to wait for the sake of waiting. I have a feeling TES VI might "just" make it into the next gen console, just because I don't see Sony or Microsoft do anything other than making smaller and smaller versions of current consoles for a while yet.

lol nintendo cafe? what does it do make coffee(with a sacrfrice to gameplay wether you use it or not) and play video games at the same time?

Are you serious about this, or were your fingers just tired? Any good reason why they should ignore 90% of the gaming world?

^ Fixed that for ya... lol

There are far more console gamers than there are PC gamers. Yes, the consoles (de?) evolved from PC's, but even if you cut down the number to just hardcoe Gamers (the ones who spend a minimum of 40+ hours per week gaming) they still out number PC gamers almost 4 - 1. It would be a marketing/money-loss nightmare for a modern company who worked across the whole PS3/360/PC spectrum to alienate and ignore their console crowd with their newest contribution...

"Should be for PC only" is one of the most [censored] comments I have read on most any Forum... and that's saying something.

PC's have better graphics and processing speeds if you specifically build the rig to run the newest game at it's highest settings (which most of the PC Gamers on here do, and there is not a da** thing wrong with that either), but the consoles are wickedly powerful in their own right/classification. You can't really compare the two.

The more TES games we have the better, let the next be for the new consoles.

My sentiments exactly.

No, they did it that way with Oblivion. They had it tough trying to work with the 360 while it was still being built, I'm glad they are going to give us an Elder Scrolls game now with full knowledge of what they can and can't do with their hardware limitations.
I game on PC, I'm honestly not fussed about graphics taking a hit because of consoles (functionality is a separate concern, but we'll have to wait and see what the UI looks like and how the controls work to worry about this.) All it means is I'll be pretty sure my PC can run it maxed out, and it wont look any worse than anything else I own. That's pretty much all I ask for. Sure I'm a little disappointed that they wont be taking full advantage of DX11, but I'll live.

I mean, it really doesn't matter, because when next gen consoles come out, they'll make another Elder Scrolls game on them, even if it's a couple years after new consoles come out. It's not like they're just gonna stop making Elder Scrolls games. Then, all the people on here who complain about current gen graphics will be happy... but everyone will just complain about something new.

A lot of PC users (admittedly, myself included) have complained that Skyrim is going to be restricted by the aging technology of the Xbox 360.

So, do you feel that Skyrim should've waited for new technology, or it is fine as is?

Note: I am not trolling or complaining; Todd himself stated that they almost waited. I just wanted to see if anyone felt that they should have.

Well, consider this: How many complaints/excuses have we heard about past games, to the tune of "Well, [console] didn't come out until late in the cycle, they weren't used to that system" to excuse some pretty hideous giltches and errors.

So with that in mind you're basically asking if they should have tried to wait so that they could fly blind with a new engine (which they're doing anyway) combined with coding for two brand-new consoles that they're not familiar with. Put that way, it doesn't sound like such a good idea does it?

Therefore: "No, it absolutely should not have waited. "

Atleast this means that the next TES installment will be on console Bethesda is very familiar with.

Better than trying to test it on an obsolete model before launching on a new one.

In all fairness, how can one answer the question without having played the game first, without having seen significant gameplay footage?
The Elder Scrolls VI will probably come out around 2016. By then the holy grail, the new console generation, will be around.

So you guys would rather have graphics that melt your face and like 30 min of gameplay than say,
An awesome game with a badass story and lots of extras with alright graphics?
For me personally i don't give a rats butt when it comes to graphics my vision is botched anyway
i am still having a damn blast with Daggerfall,Morrowind and Oblivion. Hell even Ragnarok and that's 2D.
I say no they should not wait they are now more experienced with this gen of consoles which makes them able to make a better experience for us.

Looking at the previews for skyrim, it looks much much better graphically than oblivion. The devs have had time to get to know how to really stretch the power of the 360 and the PS4. If they werent able to make such a step up in graphics, I would say they should have waited, but the game looks great!

Using next generation graphics and implementing them for the first time in a massive world like Skyrim is a tall task. So since they will not be pressured with next generation graphics even though the graphics will still be greatly improved it gives them far more time and resources addressing problems people had with oblivion and filling the world with in depth content. Since Morrowind was next gen for it's time and Oblivion as well, Skyrim not being will probably make it the most in depth TES game to date. A lot more time can be done with the story line, NPC interactions, quality of quests and unique locations and cities.

1) Game release schedules shouldn't be based around hardware release schedules, it should be based around how long it takes them to produce a quality game for whatever hardware is available. Why shoud BGS' financial and creative future be dictated by Microsoft and Sony? Don't they already have too much influence/control? Part of the reason Duke Nukem Forever kept getting pushed back was due to hardware release schedules.

2) PC gamers are already the smaller market, why shrink that market even further by constantly targetting the bleeding edge? How many people had computers that could run Oblivion on release day?

As a PC gamer, sure it'd be nice to have the better graphics and open cities and such, but considering the dangers of delaying a release, I think I'll take my games when I can get them, and look forward to the next iteration to be on better hardware.

At first I jumped and said, "Yes!"

Then I took a moment and rethought this out, and I think no now. They'd have to either take a guess at what the next gen hardware will be like, or wait for it to come out and get acquainted with it. One could result in a poorly optimized game, the other in far to much waiting for the fans, and probably them (due to budgetary reasons).

Also, they wouldn't have to wait for next gen to do a proper PC port. Giving PC users things such as (most importantly and obviously) a proper UI, DX11 performance boost features, high res (at least 2048x2048) texture packs, and perhaps even a toggle open cities option, in my opinion, should be obvious things to achieve. Skyrim will be the last TES game we'll see for ~6-10 years, if it can be made as future proof as possible, it should be.

As a PC user, I think the idea of delaying it another 2+ years would have been insane. And that there's nothing wrong with the graphics. And that having games cross-compatible with this generation of consoles has been a good thing, since it's allowed the average PC users, who don't upgrade their hardware whenever some big name developer gets a hardon for "pushing the limits", to actually play alot of the games released in the last couple years.

I bought a good PC two years ago and it can still play most games at high/highest at 1680x1050 and I don't want to buy a new PC anytime soon. Hopefully the next generation of consoles is 2-4 years away.

Bethesda could make Deer out of just a few squares and a rectangle, aslong as it said "Deer" above it and i could punch it, id be happy. :tes:
Joking aside, no i dont think there making the wrong choice. I see the new Xbox and PS3 coming holiday 2012 or spring 2013, for one PS3 is hurting due to the hacker thing and could use a fresh console, Microsoft wouldn't allow Sony that much breathing room so there release would be due to competing with the PS4.

Why?

Consoles are falling further and further behind PCs, and I don't see that trend stopping. The next generation of consoles are probably already inferior to current PCs, and we won't be seeing them until 2013.
