Do you think Skyrim should've just waited for the next gener

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 7:28 pm

This is pure conjecture.

I'd guess by working with "old" technology they need not pour as many resources / were able to develop a new game engine from scratch which likely will help the game series in time.

Also, keep in mind, that if they keep releasing a TES every 5-6 years they'll not have to work in the dark with regards to new console specs for the next generation.

That said, ideally they'd throw a 'Witcher' and work with the PC as their baseline then scale the games down to consoles if necessary ...

A lot of PC users (admittedly, myself included) have complained that Skyrim is going to be restricted by the aging technology of the Xbox 360.

So, do you feel that Skyrim should've waited for new technology, or it is fine as is?

Note: I am not trolling or complaining; Todd himself stated that they almost waited. I just wanted to see if anyone felt that they should have.

No, I wouldn't want them to wait, if the consoles are restricting the PC version, it's because of the developers, they are fully capable at making a version which utilizes the PC potential.

IDK they might use the Skyrim engine for FO4 and that could take at least 2 years to 3 and the next gen consules could take 5 years to release. The Next ES should be on the next gen consules.

I suppose that's true, depends how you are judging it. For a console game I suppose it does look rather spectacular? I dunno, I don't really play on consoles.

Whereas I play on a crappy PC & a 20" monitor. And don't have an HD TV or a current gen console yet. The consoles look better than my PC games. :D

Uh no because of a couple of factors.

1. It's been 5 years since Oblivion.
2. If you put off the game too long people lose interest in it like Duke Nukem Forever which took 14 years before it got another game.
3. They need this game to get rid of the image that Bethesda games are very buggy.
4. The game will end up like Oblivion where it can't fully take advantage of the new softwares tools like they can right now with the 360 and PS3
5. PC has modding and better graphics so their argument is irrelevent.

I apologize for number 5 but I'm getting sick and tired of the PC groups complaining about how "Oh the game's going to be held back because of consoles, or The games ruined because of consoles". Really, the main fan base is on the consoles and it would be stupid to ignore them, not to mention that PC gamers have access to modding and the command console. They shouldn't be complaining at all, nor do they have any right to complain.

I have heard that Microsoft may unleash the 720 during E3 but i dont think that will happen. Already had plans for the CE but free ones are always good.

Well I meant it in the sense that if the next gen consoles don't release by 2017, you'll already have long since gotten Skyrim...

2015-2016 is my guess for Xbox's sucessor although Sony's new system will be sooner probably 2013-2015 due to the Hacking issue that they had this year.

I don't think Bethesda should wait for the next gen consoles to catch up on technology, but I do think that they should not limit the capabilities of the PC versions based on the limits of the current consoles; when they do stuff like this, they're basically saying that they would love to make the PC version better but can't because they want PC and console versions to be equal. I think the devs for Dragon Age 2 pulled a stunt like this and it ended up with Dragon Age 2 not being as great as the first one. PC owners spend more money for a gaming PC, therefore should expect PC games to be superior to console versions. I'm not just talking about difference in graphics. Dragon Age 1 on the PC was far better than its console counterparts and it wasn't based on graphics alone.

Are you serious about this, or were your fingers just tired? Any good reason why they should ignore the other half of the gaming world?

The next console line will probably be released in 1.5-2 years. You are lying to yourself if you think that the console manufacturers have not started designing the next generation until this year. I am pretty sure that all they are doing at this point is figuring out how it should look and how the parts need to be built so that it can fit in that package.

No. With less focus on graphics, Skyrim is likely to be a better game than if Bethesda was trying to work with new technology, and with the focus on graphics.

If anyone thinks they should have waited, they can always just not play skyrim and play TES 6 when it appears on the next generation of consoles/pc

According to Todd and Pete, it would be around the other 90%.

Seriously, Skyrim had been delayed long enough as it is. We don't even know when the next generation is coming out, unless you count Nintendo Cafe.

It is simply unrealistic to wait for the sake of waiting. I have a feeling TES VI might "just" make it into the next gen console, just because I don't see Sony or Microsoft do anything other than making smaller and smaller versions of current consoles for a while yet.

Skyrim was never delayed

Also TES VI will EASILY be for the next consoles. Beth considered doing it with TES V...now that I think of it FO4 might just make it into the next console cycle since the new consoels will probably be released in a couple, maybe three, years, which I'm guessing is the development time for the game. TES VI will probably be able to "fully" utilise the next gen's power, like Skyrim is doing with the current cycle.

On topic no Beth shouldn't have waited, they're doing the right thing
