Do you think Skyrim should've just waited for the next gener

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 10:23 am

A lot of PC users (admittedly, myself included) have complained that Skyrim is going to be restricted by the aging technology of the Xbox 360.

So, do you feel that Skyrim should've waited for new technology, or it is fine as is?

Note: I am not trolling or complaining; Todd himself stated that they almost waited. I just wanted to see if anyone felt that they should have.

The PS3 is not even close to being fully utilized. So no.

No, they should not have waited in my opinion. Skyrim is looking like it will be a good game despite the 'aging technology of the Xbox 360'

Damned if you do; damned if you don't. Though I voted No. As an X360 owner I don't want to wait 7-8 years for the next TES game only to have them "guess" at the final hardware specs and leave a bunch stuff out of the game again. And if we're talking waiting a couple years after the next consoles come out so BGS has a good idea of what the hardware can do then were're talking in the range of 10 years and I don't think, in this day and age, that people want to wait (be the PC, PS3, or X360 gamers) that long for the next game in the series.

Seriously, Skyrim had been delayed long enough as it is. We don't even know when the next generation is coming out, unless you count Nintendo Cafe.

It is simply unrealistic to wait for the sake of waiting. I have a feeling TES VI might "just" make it into the next gen console, just because I don't see Sony or Microsoft do anything other than making smaller and smaller versions of current consoles for a while yet.

Yes, we waited for 5 years without something burning down...Im pretty sure another 4 and some change + bethesda actually getting aquainted with the New tech and not the 6 month rush would have been just fine.

It's easy to say that now, since the game is coming out in less than 6 months. Would you have had this same opinion last year at this time, when there was nothing?

No, PS4 won't be out til what? 2014-15? And Xbox is about the same time I think. I can't wait that long between games, and Bethesda would have spent years and years with no clue what the specs would be so no idea what to aim for. I'm glad they made it for this generation.

Before the announcement i was kinda hoping they would wait for the next generation consoles. I have waited in 5 years, it's not like a couple of years more would have killed me if it meant the game would be bigger, better and prettier. But like everyone else i was ecstatic when they announced Skyrim and ofcause i am looking forward to the game. 7-8 years would probably also have been too long to wait.

No, absolutely not. It's much more important to keep your established fanbase connected (4-5 years is a lot already) than waiting for the never ending 'next gen' hardware. I want to visit all the provinces in this life.

It would have been a too long wait. Also, games can look amazing with today's technology. Crysis 2, BF3 are examples of that games can still look ultra-amazing on consoles.
Of course it depends on the hardware, but it also depends on how good the developers actually are using it, and how much time they spend on doing so.

Could Skyrim look ultra-amazing as Crysis 2 and BF3 does? Not sure. Only the developers themselves know. We fans that aren't professional developers can just pointlessly speculate.

Personally yes, I was happily nawing on my Modded Oblivion and Morrowind, the games grew that way from modding

Still, it is a bit of a luxury for a game company to deliberately delay making games, don't you think? It might make sense if the next gen is say, only 2 years away. But I am not expecting anything other than Cafe for a long time. There is really no point waiting for a future console when you have the time to make a game right now, sell it, make money, and then make another new game for the next gen console after that. A hypothetical 4 years of playing Skyrim should be enough for us to be prepared to buy TES VI.

Absolutely not.
The only reason this is even a question is from some absurd theorizing by people who've not even played the game, that somehow it's going to be held back due to the current consoles.

There will be nothing wrong with the game from a hardware perspective.
If the graphics are going to be an issue for you, then I suggest something like, I don't know, Mario bro's...

I think its also smart of Bethesda to build a game for a know quantity this time, as clearly there was issues making Oblivion for the Xbox360.

They are still getting Piles from FO3 and NV(YES I KNOW THEY DIDNT MAKE IT).......one cannot imagine the amount of Coinage they are raking on that...they could have definently afforded the wait, its not like they were sitting on their duffs after Oblivion

I sure don't; I could be dead by then. I'm very happy they went forward and it seems like there are a lot of new things to look forward to with great new graphics and fighting dragons! I've never fought a dragon before. I just finished Oblvion again and had a great time, even as that game becomes 'old' it's still great fun to play. We'll have all new stories and intrigue and there's lots more they aren't telling us yet...and I hope they keep lots and lots of secrets so we're surprised. :)

So I'm ready!

Not to mention that the additional development time would not be able to be utilised effectively. To do anything beyond rough planning, they'd need to know the specs of the systems coming out so they could decide how they need to deal with AI, graphics, world design etc. so they'd need to do a lot of waiting for the first 4 or so years of development.

Well good for you. Luckily for the rest of us, BGS thought that waiting 10 years for the next TES game was a little ridiculous.

True, I don't know what they think. But I do know what they're doing and what they're doing is not waiting 10 years.

There must be more parameters in this equation than fast cash or putting the most impressive game ever on the best hardware ever. They must take into account the market as a whole, they must be visible or the fans could shift to other franchises. I think the current cycle is optimal, especially now that they work on the Fallout franchise too, I just wish they produced a really substantial expansion after 1-1.5 years for Skyrim as well.

They complained with just. Skyrim should've waited for the next generation of consoles. I don't want to suffer low res tex because Todd thought to himself one day "Maybe there's some hidden potential in an overused system?"

There's really no discussion about it.

None? Not even the fact that the next generation won't be out for YEARS?
