Do you think Skyrim will actually live up to all the hype?

Post » Wed Oct 06, 2010 10:43 am

So far we've been told about a bunch of new features that are supposed to make Skyrim so great (new inventory and UI, no class restrictions, etc.)

As it stands, my question is: do you think Skyrim will seriously be as good as it sounds, or it's all too good to be true?

I do believe this has been asked at least five million times now. In the last couple of days infact.

The hype I have for it? Yes. The hype in general? ..... not quite but close.

edit - well, actually yes, there seems to be a lot of doubt about new systems so I think people will get an excellent game with a few flaws due to new systems.

I guess it depends what you're looking for in the game.

For me, I love the TES series and played both MW and OB and liked them equally.

I see no reason why it won't be better for me. If they improve on a working formula then it's always going to live up to the hype. I think some people just have too many ambitions for a game this big and will inevitably be disappointed.

I have not seen much hype... Halo series and the COD series have more hype than the tes series... Then again its all up to the end user who hypes it up... As in we oursefls cause the hype. I dont know what to expect so. it will for me.

I've never understood the hype around first person shooters. They're all basically the same. All thats been added to the genre over the last decade is gimmicks.

It depends how much hype each individual has.

Will it be the second coming of Christ? I doubt it.

Will it be a good game? Absolutely, and I'll be putting hundreds of hours into it most likely.

And whatever problems it does have, there will be mods to fix those. So perhaps it COULD be the second coming, with the right mods.

Honestly, I think a lot of people (myself included) were WAY over-hyped for Oblivion. Now, don't get me wrong, Oblivion was a FANTASTIC game, and I have put hundreds (if not at least a thousand or so) hours into it (given I use(d) a lot of mods like OOO, QarlsTP3, Open Better Cities, etc). But I think A LOT of people expected Oblivion to be the be-all-end-all of games for it's generation, and it wasn't. So that's why I think people are being cautious with Skyrim, and I can understand. I'd rather have my doubts, and be proven right, and be less disappointed, than expect the "second coming" and be horribly let down again. OR! Have my doubts, be proven wrong, then be in for a great surprise!

I do believe that you shouldn't add useless replies...But nope, I don't think skyrim will ever live up to the hype of it's fans. However, i'm sure people who have never played a TES game will be blown away. We fans just expect too much :(

Overall, I think it'll about match the hype. It won't live up to Beth's hype, but nothing ever does. And that's not a comment on Beth specifically, but just a pretty much unavoidable feature of public relations and advertising. One of the basic aspects of PR - one might even be able to argue THE basic aspect of PR - is to make a thing sound as good as possible. That the thing in question then never quite manages to live up to the claims is just an unavoidable side effect of that. The hamburger you get from a fast food place is NEVER as good as the one in the commercial. The laundry detergent you use NEVER gets your clothes as bright and fresh as the clothes in the commercial. That's just the way it is.

But overall, again, it will almost certainly about match the hype. What I mean by that is if one were to take all the things being said about it - take all the comments from the most ardent defenders and all the comments from the most ardent critics and all the comments from all the people in between, add them all together, then derive an "average" of all those comments - that's almost certainly about what Skyrim will be.

Has already lost some of its hype it originally had to me. Generally though, I think it will be an awesome game. A game we'll play and enjoy for a long, long time.

As I said and others... its the indevidual. not all FPS games are the same with a little of gimmicks. some are differnt but most are the same. but then again I can say the same for all games. RPG games are all the same you run around do a quest hit somthing with your sword how boring. calling in a air strike from 500 yards away and watching tank parts and bodies fly away from the explosion is fun.

Its up to the person most like FPS games (So there is more hype created by everyone wanting and talking about it) I like them but then again I like story and new universes. I can't play COD (gameplay does not suit me) but I can play Halo (when I dont have 12 year olds on my team.) But I generaly play RT/RPG games.

For me it will live up to the hype. It will depend on the person but for me any Elder Scrolls title has never disappointed me in the least. The stories are epic the world is amazing they are consistantly improving gameplay with each new entry. Like I said its up to a persons expectations reguarding the hype: for me I love all the titles.

I actually don't. It depends a lot because each person interprets the hype differently.

I know that my excessive optimism will lead me to believe that each little statement they make means some grand, huge, deep and complex feature has been added. Usually, though, it's just a little gimmick that technically satisfies their statement.

So no. In my mind it won't live up to the hype. That's not to say it won't be awesome though.

No, of course not. Popular video game titles like this rarely do. But it's still fun to join in on the hype and anticipation.

It's almost worth the let down. :turtle:

In fact, only Morrowind didn't disappoint me, because it was the first TES game I had played, I didn't catch any of the hype at the time, and I didn't know what to expect.

When you come into a game like that, the game is incredible. It's when you build up your hopes about something that it lets you down the most.

I think Bethesda really needs to step it up at E3 if it wants to resuscitate the somewhat dying momentum.
I do think it's all been planned from the start, as a deliberate marketing strategy. But the information scarcity could very well back fire and eventually draw people away.

Let's hope the flame gets reignited next week when we read Todd's sensible informative answers and 10 days from now at E3, when we finally get to watch some significant gameplay footage.

Indeed. If there's no gameplay footage at E3, i'll be disappointed.

Will be interesting to see what they got for us to show around E3. Very interesting.
A full non-stop gameplay video would be really nice. I'm sure Bethesda has a pretty strict plan to follow. I mean, a lot of what we were originally told in the GI magazine in February has just been rehashed over and over again and again, just to try and keep the "flame of hype" alive, without spoiling too much new stuff for later I guess.

Now, however... we need something completely new. E3 couldn't come any sooner.

Yet we still have to make it to November. Seems so far away. I'm pretty sure I will forget about Skyrim at some point in between until I get a call from gamestop to come pick it up.

Well personally, it will live up to my hype. I'm a huge elder scrolls fan so it would seriously take A LOT to disappoint me. But there's always going to be pessimists that look at the game and say it svcks... So really, it doesn't even matter to me in that regard.
