Do you think Skyrim will be the best TES game?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:24 am

A lot of Morrowind's ever-lasting charm lies in the nostalgia factor in that you are playing something really old-school. Skyrim, I think, will be a much better experience overall.

I think it will be a close call between Morrowind and Skyrim. I think Skyrim will win though. We'll just have to wait and see :)

To me, it all comes down to a precise definition of the word "best." If by "best" one means "most enjoyable - most diverting - a source of the most amusemant" then yes, it could well be the best yet. If, however, by "best" one means "highest quality," then I see absolutely no chance of it. I just don't see any way it could possibly be any better than, at most, third behind Daggerfall and Morrowind.

This is in much the same way that, for instance, I would rather play lots of things than play chess, but I'd argue that chess is easily the "best" game at least in the west (I make that proviso because I haven't played enough of the other front runner - wei chi - to be sure whether it's better or not, but I know many say it is).

Potential, yes. It's there every time.

People who are claiming at this point that Skyrim will be the best game evar with 100% certainty need to calm down, too much hype is unhealthy. :P

I really don't know how anyone could prefer Morrowinds music over Oblivions to be honest. Look up "Auriels ascension". Tell me thats not amazing! Its amazing.... right?
Also Oblivion had eerie cave music where as MW just played the explore music regardless. Nostalgia is a killer.

I'm inclined to just take the question as asking for my own preferences - will I like Skyrim more than any other TES game? If you think there is good sense to be made of more objective standards of video game quality, then so be it. I won't indulge in that belief.

So far, I'm confident. At least, I'm very confident I'll prefer it over Oblivion. Will I prefer it to Morrowind? I think that largely depends upon the story and the atmosphere, but Bethesda are making good noises. I'm also inclined to think that Michael Kirkbride's vote of confidence in Skyrim is worth something, just given the sorts of things which tickle his fancy.

I voted for Skyrim. I think pound for technological pound it may struggle to compete with Morrowind or Daggerfall but it will so far ahead of those games in terms of graphics, animations and hopefully polish that tips the balance in favour of Skyrim.

Also, the great thing about the TES games is that most weaknesses can be modded out and for the first time that option may also be available to console users.

I'm missing the option "other", so I didn't vote. I think Skyrim might be able to be as good as Morrowind was. Of course, it might be even better, but I'm not so sure about that. It has great potential, however the second option would never come to my mind. It will be better than Oblivion, I'm fairly sure.

I am a big fan of Morrowind. That said, I still think Skyrim will be better. With all the improvements they have already made, they have also said this,

With Oblivion, we’re dealing with the capital province, and we wanted to get back to the more classic Arena and Daggerfall feel of a fantasy world that felt more refined and welcoming. A place that you instantly understood. But in that, we sacrificed some of what made Morrowind special; the wonder of discovery.”

The aim this time around is “trying to bring some of that back and walk the line between Morrowind and Oblivion. Where it’s at first familiar looking, but has its own unique culture and spin on it.

This gives me hope that Skyrim will not only be unique in its own right, but improves upon the previous games by combining their good points.

Since no one has played the game yet no one can honestly say. These are just opinions without any facts to back anything up.

Based on what we know, thing's are looking good. However, I'm not going to make this decision until I play the full game and neither should anyone else.

I really do think it will be one of my favorite games of all time. Open world games are just so much better than anything else and ive sunk hundreds of hours into F03 and oblivion and just seeing the improvements and interviews I got so much hope and expectations for this game. Cannot wait(but I still have to)

I dont think no levitation has been confirmed.
Or I missed something.
Im actually leaning towards that there will be levitation in Skyrim.
They made a point of 're inventing' it in the Infernal City and we know that Skyrims worldspace is open enough to allow dragons to attack towns.
If Im wrong, can someone please link me to where its confirmed it wont be in?

P.S. Skyrim is going to be the best game of all time.

I voted Morrowind, but I'm hopeful that Skyrim will surpass it.

And to those of you saying that nostalgia is influencing the vote, I'd just like to say that I still play Morrowind more than I do Oblivion, even though I've probably sunk about ten times the amount of hours into Morrowind already. So it's not for nostalgic purpose that I prefer Morrowind, because given the choice right now, I still choose to play Morrowind over Oblivion. Morrowind's got more depth, more options, and a more internally consistent world and that's what's important to me in an RPG. Skyrim seems to still be focusing on combat, graphics, and streamlining, which are areas that I think Oblivion spent too much time on to the detriment of the parts of the game that I find to be important. We'll see though...

Unless they make some colossal mistake with the perk implementation or something, I'm really getting some encouraging vibes off of Todd and the rest of the developers at Bethesda. At last, they've taken heart to the fans of both Morrowind and Oblivion and tried to make a game modern but with as many compromises as possible. The dark, "primeval" artistic direction has to be my favorite yet across the series. You can really tell that they care heavily about Skyrim - it's practically the messiah of the Elder Scrolls to me, the game with the potential to unite the MW/OB fanbases together and finally give an RPG experience that has just as much freedom in the actual world as there is in your own character's development and gameplay choices.

For reference, I loved Morrowind's world the most and Daggerfall's freedom the most. I often fluctuate between which is my favorite TES game, but they're both up there at a near-untouchable tier. With the Radiant Story system and what is looking to be a substantial increase in weapons, armor, and quests, I'm hoping Skyrim will make it up there as well. I'm willing to say that TES V will, at the very least, be on equal footing with Morrowind to the average forum fanatic. Perhaps higher, perhaps a notch lower. But if we overlook the admitted nostalgia factor with DF/MW, I think this game has a very good chance at becoming the best.

Yes, I believe this will be the best TES game ever.

I started with Oblivion but did play Morrowind because everyone said that game was awesome. When I say Skyrim will be a better game meant the whole package. Irrespective of what is there or not in the Vanilla package, as long as they don't screw up the World we explore everything can be rectified and improved with a touch of mods. And for this reason I can without a doubt say that Skyrim will be the best because with a Better Engine at the base quality mods can push the limits in every field.

No "I don't have a favorite" choice? :)

(Seriously, though - I don't really see "best" games in a series, unless it's like a two game series and one of them was clearly terrible. Different games are fun, in different ways.)

I feel optimistic that Skyrim will be closer to Morrowind than Oblivion was. I feel like BGS learned a lesson with Oblivion and redeemed themselves with FO3, so I voted that Skyrim will be the best.

How is it nostalgia if we're still playing it?

Exactly.
But even if it's nostalgia, then it shows it was a great great game, worth remembering and praising more over other games.
Morrowind was a far better RPG than Oblivion for many valid reasons I think. It had some big flaws though, like any other game, but all in all, it was a really really good game.

I really hope it will be the best TES game, but I will not get way too hyped. So far I like what I see, but Im not sure if it will be as big impact of gaming as morrowind was when it was released. But I sure hope so!
