Do you think the name "Perks" was a good choice?

I don't give a flying **** what they are called. Where is that option in the poll?

I don't care whether it's perks, abilities, traits, skills and they change the skills we have now to skill groups, or whatever, but 'feats'? No thanks. If there are specifically earned perks, like the insect and animal killing perks in New Vegas, then feats would be a possible name for them, but otherwise no ta.

It was a terrible idea to call them perks. Everywhere I see people thinking that Skyrim uses the same system like Fallout 3 did. But it does not. Skyrim's perks are more akin to Skill trees. They're completely different things.

Bad idea. Mixed themselves too much into Fallout now. Don't get me wrong, I DO like the perk system in Fallout. But I'm certain it would've been better off staying in Fallout.

-DL :chaos:

I'm fine with it, but that's the problem right there: People associate it with FO3's perk system, since that's the last game Bethesda made, even though they're not really that much alike, Fallout didn't invent the word, and they've been using the word perk since Oblivion.

Does what it says on the tin. And to be honest, I don't think it matters at all. No one in-game is going to say "I smell dead things, been taking conjuration perks, have we?"

Actually, people did comment on how good your skills were.

Okay, so I think there are a lot of people who have a misconception of what the perks are (maybe not here, but other places).

In my opinion the name is dumb and it's probably just there because Fallout had it, the "Perks" in Skyrim seem more or less like Skill points in Diablo, or talent points in WoW

The only reason I think it's a bad name is because people get it mixed up with Fallout.

I also heavily dislike it and have thoroughly attempted to explain it a handful of times and so have others. Naming it Perks isn't the issue.

The issue is the Skill Tree system used in Skyrim(And a humongous number of RPGs in general) is fairly different from the Perk system used in the Fallout games.

However previous TES games have had "stand-alone perks" but no longer.

Either way it seems the Perks tag is being used to mop up more FO3/New Vegas fans onto the Skyrim bandwagon

re: "But it's too similar to Fallout 3" and "They did it to cater to the CoD weenies"

I just opened my Oblivion manual. Table of contents, a bit more than halfway down the page:

Skills, Mastery Levels, and SKILL PERKS ..................................... 20

On page 20 itself:

As you rise in proficiency with skills, you gain Skill Perks at new Mastery Levels. You will eagerly anticipate the special benefits of these Skill Perks.....

280 perks, many (mayhaps all?) can have ranks.

If the theoretical max level you can attain is 75 and you gain 1 perk per level (and assume you don't get any to start out with), this is a rather varied perk tree. Of course, I'm relatively sure that due to the "connect the dots" fashion of the constellations, you'll have to get perks in sequence if you want to get to one at the far end of the "tree". But this allows you to either divvy up your perks across more skills or to REALLY focus on a select couple.

On the ASSUMPTION that each skill might have about 15+ perks, this allows for a very deep customization.

Now we just need to find an article fleshing out the skill tree in its entirety.

As others before, I would have preferred something like "feats" or "traits," but the point is moot because no matter what we call them, they still do the same thing.

Not the point. Anyone who says it's catering to CoD, it's not. Also nor are these traits or feats in any way.

The system is called a Linear Skill Tree. Use search to find topics over it, check my post history, or use Google for an indepth overview.

Yes TES has had Stand-Alone Perks before. But it's never utilized the Perk System for the entire game. Nor is it with Skyrim.

And that it's falsely parading as using a Perk system is both a lie and frustrating.

It doesn't bother me too much, but I would have preferred a more fantasy-appropriate name like "boon" or "feat."

Hey, like I said in my post - I was just responding to the people who're ranting & raving that Skyrim using the word "Perks" is copying from FO3/CoD. Not whether it's a good term overall.

My personal feeling is: I don't care. Perks, Feats, Talents, Abilities, Godboons, Flurms, Moobles..... whatever. It's just a word.

Not really a big deal to me as is, but it would have been nice if they were called feats :P

Exactly how I feel about them.

But come to think of it... Moobles... has a ring to it...

They might as well call the map "GPS" instead also. Seems like they don't want any of the stuff that the player sees outside of the game world to actually coincide with whats going on in the game world.

There were skill perks in Ob and there are skill perks in SR, Todd has been using the term for some time. In interviews(long before FO3 was released) he called the racial ability's in OB perks as well.

Personally I find shooters to be dull as hell. Not having a huge superiority ( or inferiority ) complex however, I don't automatically assume any one who enjoys COD can not appreciate a deep role playing game.

F'KING LOVE CoD N' HALO! I like horror shooters as well. But Elder scrolls...Edlerscrolls is what soothes my frustration to hearing "ENEMY NUKE IT'S OVER!" And "GAME OVER". Thats where my heart is...the Elder scrolls.

I think abilites would fit better. But in the end, I don't really care. It is what it is and a name is just that; a name. I think the third option "Don't care" would win with 75% of the votes to be honest.

"Perks" make me think of the word, "Peak", which makes me think of "Birds", which makes me think of something obnoxious. So no, I don't like the word. :(

"Perks" are just as arbitrarily out-of-context as "levels." I have accepted the latter, I can accept (and have accepted) the former.
