Do you think the name "Perks" was a good choice?

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 10:34 pm

Okay, so I think there are a lot of people who have a misconception of what the perks are (maybe not here, but other places).

In my opinion the name is dumb and it's probably just there because Fallout had it, the "Perks" in Skyrim seem more or less like Skill points in Diablo, or talent points in WoW

The only reason I think it's a bad name is because people get it mixed up with Fallout.

Does what it says on the tin. And to be honest, I don't think it matters at all. No one in-game is going to say "I smell dead things, been taking conjuration perks, have we?"

Keep in mind, the word "Perk" is not written anywhere on the UI skill trees, so you can call them whatever you like.

Not really a big deal to me. They probably called them perks so all those CoD casuals would want to play it.

It's a Fallout reference, that is all. Call it whatever you like.

What they are called is irrelivent, they do what they do. If people get mixed up with Fallout then they should do some reading and find out about the game.

Yeah, I'm sure that's the reason...

I like the name 'perks', but talents or feats would have worked just as well I imagine.

They could have called it anything, really. With "perks" we just know what to expect.

Bad idea. Mixed themselves too much into Fallout now. Don't get me wrong, I DO like the perk system in Fallout. But I'm certain it would've been better off staying in Fallout.

Personally I find shooters to be dull as hell. Not having a huge superiority ( or inferiority ) complex however, I don't automatically assume any one who enjoys COD can not appreciate a deep role playing game.

Well, 98% of them can't....but besides that by calling them "perks" its something CoD gamers can relate to.

They should just name the Perks, "Abilities" or something like that, I would say Skills but then the actual "Skills" wouldn't be Skills anymore, they could also name the Perks "Skill Abilities" or "Special Abilities", but those names are kind of stupid.

Talents. Feats. Traits. Anything but perks. Perks implies that they're extras. They're not. They define you more than your skill ranks do. I like it that way. I wish there were attribute talent trees too, but the "perks" are a very good thing, even if they're terribly named.

yep, we've seen the skill trees for Block, Two-handed and One-handed and the word "Perk" was not written anywhere.

It's possible it is included in the level-up menu, when you must choose a new perk.

I don't think "perks" was maybe the best name, but it doesn't bother me. For me it is attached to Fallout, and doesn't sound very... Elder Scrollsy, if you know what I mean. I think someone above mentioned "traits" and "feats", which just seems to fit the world better to me - but it's just semantics isn't it? As long as it works well, it doesn't really matter. :)

It's just a word. Not much to get upset about, simply because it was present in another game. There were swords in Fallout 3 too, surely we don't have remove them as well? Or Levels? Or NPCs, food, armour etc.

Are people really that paranoid that Skyrim will be "Fallout with magic"?

I just don't get the fuss.

Also, perks were present in Oblivion too. No one gave a damn back then. I guess that the release of FO3 in between Oblivion and Skyrim forever ruined the word. Somehow.

It's a meants to an end so it doesn't really matter they may not even be named in game. We could have gone with talents or abilitys but everyone know what to exspect with perks.

Hooray, I belong to the 2 percent then! I have four CoD titles on PS3 but I've played RPGs since Baldur's Gate and I'm buying a new pc just because of Skyrim.
I think the name "Perks" was not the best choice (talents, feats?) but I don't think it's that important anyway.

I really don't care.
Call it a feat, perk, talent, ability, skill specialisation whatever. Does it really matter?

The name 'perks' makes many people assume that those are not related to any skills, which is wrong.
I saw many many people suggesting perks like in fallout 3.
