Do you think they are dumbing down the series again?

The question is as simple as that.

What do you mean again? To my knowledge the series has never been dumbed down.

Can't say. I can be easily swayed to either side with more information and clarification from the devs.

mmm needs an intermediate option

new features such as dual wielding, smithing, cooking mining and farming add depth to the game.

but removing attributes, several skills, and a whole magic school is cutting back content.

Not at all. I think they are merging the complexity hard core users want with the accessibility of new users and the modern accommodations games have a standard to set for players. Now of course I hold my final judgment till ONE I read the magize and TWO play the game myself.

And what I mean by asking the question above is that I know what game your talking about and I still don't see how Oblivion was a dumbed down version of Morrowind. It was exactly like Morrowind except it consolidated several skills. In fact, the morrowind fan boys that complained that the game was dumbed down then complained how the new lockpicking was too complicated  Make up your minds people. I want one of the Morrowind fanatics to explain to me how it was in any way a dumbing down of the game series. I mean it, I really want to know how you believe so.

...which is understandable. It makes the game a lot more approachable for newcomers. I don't approve 100%, but I don't mind very much either. Anyway, Bethesda is introducing a "perk" system which allows us to customize our characters a lot easier... now all we need to know is how many perks there are in total.

uh.........major dumbing down from morrowind to oblivion.

as for skyrim im actually optimistic. they got rid of the ability to equip a shield and weapon and cast magic all at the same time. now you have to actually get rid of the shield or weapon to cast magic. not sure how this works with twohanded weapons maybe you just cant use magic with two handers................which is AWESOME. for once they didnt cater to the losers in gaming.

fast travel is still in but it was their in oblivion as well.......so no change.

im worried about level scaling but im assuming its better than oblivion and hopefully better than fallout 3. new vegas had it pretty close. in the end mods will fix any issues.

the got rid of backpedaling in combat which is a big plus..........this prevents spell spamming and easy wins.

archer sounds more balanced as well. it takes longer to draw and aim your bow but you do more damage. bows in unmodded oblivion were worthless after a certain level.

as i said im optimistic now. :)

Yes removing attributes and several skills is removing something from the game but it isn't cutting back on content, it is being replaced with a more efficient/fun mechanic instead. The skills that were removed were consolidated into others and they returned older skills back to the game and made new ones. Some skills just lost their usefulness in the game. Like Security, the only thing it did for the game was affect your auto attempt on lockpicking. Or athletics and acrobatics that can be affected by a different aspect of the game instead of wasting leveling on them. The whole magic school that was cut was only like 6 spells and all of them belonged in another magic school. Like the reflect spells and Telekinesis belonged in alteration and dispel and detect life belonged in Illusion. Mysticism just didn't belong and Todd Howard saw that and even mentioned it.

I await the day people stow it about the so&so-really devoted fan crap, if you love any of the TES series you love all of it, you immediately become a really devoted fan/girl regardless of what game you play so long as you liked it.

I don't know I haven't read the mag nore played the game, in hopes that each 18 skills have tiers for each like

------------- < Long < Claymores/Longswords/Broadswords/Zweilhanders(Cant spell)
Blades
----------- < Short < Daggers/Tantos/Wazikashi/ Short blades etc etc.

Really, I asked for elaboration on the subject instead of saying "It was dumbed down because I am too emotionally attached to Morrowind to enjoy a great game". I want you to prove me wrong, give me examples of what was dumbed down from Morrowind to Oblivion. I'll help you out on one thing, Fast travel wasn't a dumbing down of Morrowind. It was using a feature already present in Morrowind but was more for a convenience factor of not having to see out a siltstrider and then waste money on it and fast travel is basically a hybrid of Siltstrider and scrolls. That's not dumbing down, that was just convenience which Fast travel went a little too far on the convenience factor and would be perfect if fast travel was only allowed to major cities or to villages instead of POI. So now, explain please.

Simplifying isn’t the same as dumbing down, and just because something is complex doesn’t mean it’s intelligent.

I think perks make up for the lost skills. Perks made leveling up very fun in Fallout.

I don't really care that Mysticism is gone, I always felt like it was stupid anyway. Which other skills got cut?

Well I dont have enough information to make that call yet however if you think merging skills like Acrobatics and Athletics into one skill means dumbing down then you my friend are a moron.

From what I understand they did not remove anything but rather reorganized abilities into other skills. That is not removing content. It is streamlining content. From what I know of Fallout perks they allow for greater customization than attributes ever did. I have seen only pluses so far.

found http://kotaku.com/5728236/the-next-elder-scrolls-has-new-combat--levelling. i lol'd at how they compare duel-wielding to halo when duel wielding was already in the series even though it was earlier.

From what I read about the story, it really sounds like they are going to heavily reference all the past elderscrolls games. I've only read the bits and peices I could find on the forums so far, but I am actually rather excited in the new direction it looks like its going to take.

I didn't say anything about removing content. I said they removed the attributes and repurposed them back into the game intertwined with the new mechanics.
