Do you think this will run on the same engine as Oblivion di

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:24 am

So what do you guys think? I really hope not. I don't want this to feel like a major MAJOR DLC like Fallout: New Vegas did (Compared to Fallout: 3). Don't get me wrong, i loved Oblivion's physics engine. Gave me an "umph" when i killed something.

Additionally, he pointed out that the upcoming project will run on existing consoles and is built on the same engine that powered Oblivion and Fallout 3. "That's our starting point -- the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware -- with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that,"

It's possible, but considering the development time they've put into it thus far, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a new engine.

EDIT: I guess I was just ninja'd? :toughninja:

I expect a better version of the OB/FO3 engine. Which is cool, I suppose.

It's supposed to be an "updated" version of the gamebryo engine.

Does this mean it will "Feel" the same like when you walk, attack, cast magic, ride a horse, jump, die, and kill? Just like FONV and FO3 feel almost identical?

Technically, they've been using the Morrowind's engine since they released Morrowind. They just kept adding stuff to it and increasing it's capability to do more.

Kinda the difference between a Model T and the Monster Truck Death Model T. Yeah, it's still technically a Model T, but they've changed so much about it...

So expect a new and improved Gamebryo engine for TESV.

If its not broke, don't fix it. Certain aspects can be made better and I'm sure they will but the basic engine is fine in my opinion. Hopefully all this time has been spent on storyline, factions, sidequests, guild quests, etc.

This makes my soul happy. As long as it doesn't "Feel" like oblivion. I'll be more then happy. I want new experiences. My FO3 and FONV experiences are mixed due to the fact they "Feel" the same.

P.S is there a term for the "FEELINGS" you get in games? (When you walk, die, kill, jump, attack, ect)

Interviewer: So are you happy with your progress [on the next project] so far?

Todd: Yeah, it's awesome, I'm ready to show it. It's a much bigger jump than Oblivion to Fallout 3. Much, much bigger in terms of fidelity, stuff on the screen, everything. I'm hard-pressed to think of a part we haven't ripped out and replaced. Rendering, animation, AI, interfaces, everything. New scripting language. We would take chunks out at a time, rework it, and put it back in. We need to have a stable codebase that's always up to prototype things.

Thanks to Antibody for this quote. So updated it is.

I really hope it feels different. Fallout 3 was a huge disappointment for me in the graphics and animation department (still a great game), it seemed really dated.

None of that is dependent on the engine, only how they implement it.

I thought they were working on a completely "new" engine that was more suitable for open-world games? Unfortunately, I don't have the exact quote but I'm sure it's floating around somewhere.

Really? I loved the improvements in graphics over Oblivion. Character faces and models were better, textures were much more detailed, the shaders and lighting effects were also great.
However, I really don't care about the animation in Bethesda's games (only morrowind...) they always seemed nice to me :)

I really, really, really hope that what ever graphics engine they use, it is more advanced than the gamebyro engine. If they do use that engine, it needs to be HEAVILY modified and advanced. Fallout New Vegas was on a modified gamebyro engine and it was definitely aged looking compared to other modern games. Big time. Personally, and granted it probably will not happen but I would love to see them use the id Tech 5 engine. John Carmack's newest graphics engine. It is BEAUTIFUL. As Bethesda and id have an extremely close relationship this would be ideal.

The newest version of the Elder Scrolls deserves, no it requires, the best in the industry.

One of the big draws for Morrowind and Oblivion (besides the gameplay) was how awesome the graphics were for each of the them at the time of their release. Each game was a true generational leap over anything out at the time. I would love to see TESV be the same.

I heard a rumor that Beth had bought a new engine. Hopefully this one blows Oblivions out of the water, that's asking for a lot sure but damn, could you imagine how awesome that would be?

So an updated version of Gamebryo? Eugh.... knowing Bethesda. the game is going to be UBER BUGGY. Cant they just create another engine? Seriously, they have been running the same buggy dated engine for over 5 YEARS....

Interesting choice of words. Seems to me like they've been fixing it for the past.... 8 years now? Using the same engine is good and bad I suppose. Bad because there's probably better engines out there more optimized for the large worlds we've been seeing with Gamebryo. Good because it's the engine they're familiar with and, well, they're bound to get it optimized eventually. At the very least we already have a good idea of the performance we'll get out of it. I'll be a very happy gamer if they can actually make TES V run better than TES IV.

I'm gonna be deeply disappointed if TES5 is still using that bloated Gamebryo engine by the time of it's release..Such a game deserves a better, more stable engine...not the nonsense that folks had to deal with since Oblivion.

I'm kind of hoping for a new engine, but kind of not. See, the TES: IV engine works smoothly in my opinion. However, a new engine could accommodate bigger worlds, better AI, better graphics, etc. Or maybe this: :obliviongate:

Personally I wouldn't mind an updated Gamebroyo engine. I just want an engine that is optimized and can run smooth. I am also hoping that the designers take heed from modders and realize certain techniques that will increase playability without altering anything much visually like polygon count and so-on.

A few things on my wish list:

High resolution textures - Like Dragon Age
DX10 Water and waves (Depends how much of Skyrim is frozen)
More intense Weather
Better looking fog
Better looking LOD trees/land without taxing the system so much

That last one is important. I have seen many games do LOD better than oblivion without little to know loss in FPS, and somehow the Oblivion engine slows down to a crawl when adding a few forts and rocks. This issue I think needs to be addressed more than anything.

Would prefer a NEW engine, not a dated, heavily modified existing engine that's been used for 4 games already. :(

I agree with you to an extent. There may be better engines but I have yet to see an engine that I felt blew gamebryo out of the water. It has worked excellently on OB, FO and FONV all of which had massive worlds. An update and overhaul is needed but not an entirely new engine. I say use the same engine and focus on storyline which is what makes the ES series great in the first place.
