It depends how far into the vault you are, you may be met with some rather heavy resistance, either lower the difficulty, or come back at a higher level with better armory/weaponry.
OT
I think personally think E.D.E is the best, I've never had a problem with him. His perk is brilliant, and related quest....

I wouldn't go into that vault ealier than maybe 18-20 myself. Level 10 seems a bit low, and is probably why you're getting stomped. Yeah, ED-E is pretty bad in there, he often gets hung up on the low door frames or windy corridors, and all of the companions go nuts chasing ghouls around between levels and all over the damn maze. It's hard to get them out of constant combat mode, once they lock onto bogeys 2 flights below you.

I tend to go it solo and stealth my way through, leaving them at the beginning of each level in 'stay here and wait' mode, and just go back to get them when it's time to go down another lower level and to put loot on them. Level up some, get better firepower, good rad suit, stock up on rad chems, and take it slow and easy, methodically clearing each area as you go.

Oh, and always look behind you- they made it so that two armored security ghouls are always spawning behind you, in numerous places.

I wouldn't go in there before I got Lucky/Mysterious Magnum, and an Assault Carbine with AP ammo.

I wouldn't imagine he would be that useful. ED-E is better in the wide-open as a scout/support companion. With an upgraded laser he can almost function as long-range fire support.

Close-quarters however he doesn't usually last long. I didn't take him into Vault 34 for this very reason. Better just to go in carefully by yourself with some heavy firepower.

Just did vault 34 level 11 with a silenced 22. Sneak critical one shot most and I always plant mines behind me so those spawning ghouls don't get me. Vault overseer was a tough one but throwing a couple grenades takes out the turrets and dropping a few C-4, close the door turn around take out the ghouls that broke out the door, who hit my mine trap, a couple shots takes them out turn back around detonate that C-4 taking half if not most his health, open door at 10 Vats shots take put overseer. Unlock armory. Once in the armory just silent kill the 3-4 ghouls until you reach the armory doors. The great thing about a critical build is the silenced .22 can be a beast on low DT creatures.

I make him and my companion wait because they are uncontrollable at times. You can then svcker the ghouls into traps where ED-E and companion wait.

This time around I'm considering making ED-E a companion. If/when I do, will I discover him to be quite the fainter that Boone is...? Or is he wired better for the job...?!

WHAT? Eddy (as I like to call him) is my most trusted companion! He's been with my current character from the beginning. She's a melee character and Eddy kills most things, before she can even get to them! Eddy is my buddy and he will always be my favorite companion! My first character never left the Lucky 28 without Eddy (well, besides the time she had to take Rex to the Vet hahaha)

I found both ED-E and Veronica to be troublesome in Vault 34. Both would constantly sense ghouls behind walls and just sit there, or go running off somewhere to try and kill things- all while I'm slowly getting rad poisoning

If you think Ed-E is useless you clearly haven't taken Rex in there. Dumb Rex! He's lucky I wasn't playing on hardcoe.

I did real well with Veronica and Ed-E in vault 34, I hardly had to kill anything while I was searching for the terminals to unlock everything.

he always died with me, unless he's been made stronger since the 2nd patch I'll leave him in Primm, much prefer Veronica and Rex

IDK i glitched my way by getting all the companions (except arcade, Rex and Boone) and couldnt keep track of my companions, as they were EVERYWHERE in the vault, while i was walking around looting every body they killed. Kinda boring, since they had all the fun :(

Normally, yes, he is. But when I was in vault 34 for the first time I had rex as a companion. Was trying to get him to trigger his WW quest to check the well. So I was spending quality time with rex when suddenly, he starts spazzing out and running all over the vault attacking things! I had no idea where he was (because Vault 34 is a maze) and ended up having to explore the vault on my own. He would only appear after I got a loading screen for entering a door.

For that reason, I never take Rex inside any vault. Too much of a hassle keeping track of him.

I take ED E with me.

Between him and Veronica I barely have to do anything.

Yes they do spazz out and go running off.

Loyal, yes. Smart, no. It's like he got kicked in the head as a puppy, and is always on robo-dog meth.
