So you think you can rp?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:52 am

I've seen that, those one-liners, and I at least put a few lines of description into them.
I'm not calling myself a great RPer, or even a good one, but I always refrain from that.

Putting just a few lines of description should be more like two or three paragraphs, even more!

Heh, maybe I should try getting him to come make a comment. It is his thread after all.

Hell yeah! I'll post!

_________
My two cents, read at own risk:
___

You could always go visit the TES fan fiction forums, it seems that is where the most experienced rpers lurk.

I actually forgot this sub-section exists... I feel like an idiot.

I am personally a very blunt writer and a bit minimalistic when I write fiction but in rps I use a little bit more.

Too much detail gets annoying and painful to read, not enough is boring.

Its all about learning moderation.

______
In my honest opinion it is unreasonable to expect the same level of skill from this forum as the TES one, this just hasn't been around as long.

I remember when I hopped over, I was one of the very experienced posters in this section, weird considering I'm one of the average nothing special posters in the TES section.

This forum will grow, though it will have ups and downs, and eventually an upper echelon of rpers will form who can be a great asset.

Im just going to add my ten cents although I dont claim to be on par with some of the writers who have posted here alreadey. Be origional in your work, good writing is something that you can work on over time, but if you dont have imagination enough to create your own story that brings something others don't then you shouldn't be on here.

I think some people have read this but not absorbed anything... :( It's good to see we have new people that have potential, but they aren't willing to learn anything I think; some posts are good but most are just... Well, it hurts me to read it, mixing up between what view their giving; what time their posting in... :ahhh: We need to kind of get together and tell each other our pro's and our con's I think. What we can get better in and what we need to work on, as well as what our strength's in writing are.

I agree, no one is really absorbing the information and help I and others have given. Kinda sad really because it will help them all around, not just on here. But it would be sorta complicated to get everyone together, and say what's wrong and right with who?

*Clears Throat loudly*

I think I'm getting better.

That you are Shadow, and I believe that's because you are one of the people who listened to Strangelove and the others... I think we should make a Thread that basically has a title like:

PLEASE READ THIS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS!

Then we can just say that perhaps embellishing on things like gramar and punctuation is important and whatnot... Then perhaps ask if anyone wants an overview of what they're skills are like. Then someone like Strangelove could give advice to what they're like and whatnot, or just someone else who thinks they know about this persons skills.

That's just my idea, most of them are bad by the way. :(

From what I've heard, this fan fic forum is what TES's were like in it's earlier days and times of overflow.

I think all this needs is time for more veterans to develop.

It's going to take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG while before that happens. Really, all the veterans have gone because of work, school, or something else. For some reason I'm a vet, but I just make decent Rps. Which people still don't understand, that my Rp's are there to help develop their Rp skills, and show them the ropes I guess. But somehow it slips through with some who just shoot off on their own?

I have to agree with everything that's been said on this page. I've read through the opening post 7 or 8 times in the last couple of weeks and have taken in different things from it each time but as has been said some people seem not to have read it at all.

Also with the fan fic's I do comment on them once I've read them and on that note I'm off to read the good Dr Strangelove's FF and also Francois Lachon's.

Having deleted 58 posts from this topic I am reopening this.

The topic is pinned to help other members learn how to roleplay, it is not a thread for general chat, the RPs/stories you are going to write, one line replies (we get enough of those in the RPs already), who is good or cross forum comparisons. If you have the experience and knowledge to add to an excellent opening post, fine. Otherwise I am requesting that you don't post here.

I don't know where else to put this, so.... Are comedic stories frowned upon, because in my short time, I haven't seen any. Again, I didn't know where to put this, but an answer would be nice.

I've seen a few, Mr. Boom usually writes them. If they are done properly, then people are happy.

Aye. Find yourself a co-host. Preferably somebody who is a decent writer, to at least write out the OP for you to give people a good impression for your RP.

I usually muck about on the Elder Scrolls boards, but as a bud has dredged me back from eternal suffering in the Realm of Madness (though why this is a bad thing is beyond me?), and I spotted that Fallout now has RP boards, well... I have to say, I'm glad Illusionary's guide is posted up here. It's something people do need to read - However, in reading posts on this thread, it's plain to me that some people have taken it the wrong way.

The guide is exactly that; it's a Guide. It's not meant to be a Code of Laws or a Holy Testimony declaring a stout definition to the ambiguous definition of "what it means to roleplay". The Guide is designed to help people to roleplay more smoothly, and to generally help people to improve the overall quality of their posts. Illusionary isn't perfect. Hell, I'm not perfect, and she called me an "RP God" in there. My advice is this; Roleplay as best you know how, and always look for ways to improve your roleplay.

If your roleplay preference is what I like to call ARP - that is to say, Action Roleplaying, then fine, whatever floats your boat. If you are not a good writer, don't let that dissuade you! I knew two people on the Elder Scrolls roleplay boards, Adeth and Sibera, who both butchered their posts grammatically and with spelling errors for some time. Hell, we even used to jokingly call Sibera 'The Illiterate Kitty', due to his resounding lack of grammatical skill. But both of them, over time, actually strived to improve their roleplay, and now both are respected names, for the most part, if you ask anybody who knew (knows? Are they still around?) them.

If you believe that the Elder Scrolls roleplayers are elitist, or that in order to be a quote/unquote "good roleplayer" you have to be a professional writer, then let me be blunt and say that you are wrong. We all have to start somewhere! When I first started to roleplay (and I thank God that these threads have long since been deleted due to age!) I was probably the most terrible writer you could imagine. But, over time, as I RP'd more, I got used to it. Illusionary's thing is just a guide, and it should be taken as friendly advice for a new or experienced roleplayer who wants to enhance their RP'ing.

If you've managed to sit and read through my poorly planned ramblonic rant of rampaging madness (I couldn't think of a final word that started with R!), then great! I hope to RP with some of you in the future, as I'm currently up lurking to join at least one Fallout Roleplay here. If y'all have any suggestions or shameless self promotion, feel free to PM it to me (so as not to incur the wrath of the moderators for spamming up this thread!)

I'm quite the controversial name around here, since Sannes(my former name) is known as both a complete and total [censored] to newbies, and also as a beyond dedicated writer/RP'er. I left the forums due to the horrible "degeneration" of the RP section that you all keep talking about. Near the end there, I tried to accept those who you all are(in the back of your minds) blaming in some way for this. A name I can use without insulting would be that of Josh-Gro-Grahz.

Near the beginning of my career here, I consistently, unapologetically insulted his writing at every turn. Back then it was error-strewn, flowless, and nigh-unreadable. After about a half a year of this though, I realized that the fact that he persisted through this berating was proof that he was trying. I now, after being gone for another half a year and noticing that Josh is still consistently posting here, and with greatly improved grammar, style, and an amount of professionalism. The main reason for the apparent slip in forum activity is simple, there hasn't been a new game released to draw new and old fans into the forum in a long while. If it weren't for the few that persisted writing and keeping the forums alive, the RP section would be, more or less dead. When the wave of new forumites comes in after Fallout, New Vegas, these will be the new "Old Timers". Its just a cycle. We just need to strive through it and the forums will be revived, and its our job to make sure at least a few dozen of the new members will follow our advice and become the new "Old Timers" after that.

Strangelove, Illusionary, Com, and you yourself, HK-47, acted as our "mentors", and josh, myself, last best, and others, will be the same for the new guys.

Quick question, since I didn't see this posted in here;

Alright, so, I was curious...I do have a Fallout OC, but the thing is, she has a follower from the Fallout 3 universe. Now, can that be added to the character sheet, and you have to role play the follower as such when you are IN a hosted role play? Or is that ultimately to the host's decision if you are allowed to have a follower?

Or is it completely discouraged? Or...maybe with certain aspects of a character that they are qualified to have a follower?

Or is it banned :P

As I said, just a curious question, because I didn't really see a rule of it set in the guide.

In order to have followers in the RP you will have to ask the host if you are able to. If you are allowed you can make a character sheet for the follower itself or implement it into your main characters character sheet.

Yeah, that's what I thought...But it's not an OC follower; it's one already made...say the name already? Alright. It's Charon XD Everyone should know him by now :P

But yeah, makes sense. Thanks for the help, bud :3
