Do you turn down the difficulty level?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:30 am

When I play, I usually play at the defult level, Adept, I believe it's called. (if not called Adept, then it's the defult setting. :P) A few times, (ok alot) I had to put the difficulty level all the way down to easy (again forget the name) because I just keep dying all the time. So Skyrim becomes unfun for me, and I just want to keep playing so I turn the difficulty down and once I kill the Dragon or what ever I put the difficulty back to default again.

I just like to see if other people do this. I am surprised in one quest, even with the difficulty down all the way, the Boss Monster I had lots of problems with, but was able to kill him without dying. Thing is I wonder how the heck it can be done on defualt setting let alone Max as others have claim.

Just like to hear (ok read) your stories if you turn the difficulty setting down and why.

I have since the last patch, I'm tired of being 1 shotted by dragon breaths and master mages even though I have 650 health and 90% magic resistance.

Yes, if a game gets too hard I turn it down. If it's too easy, I turn it up. I'm 35 years old, my friends aren't impressed if I brag about the difficulty setting at which I play a game :D
I game for fun, and if the default setting isn't fun for me, I change it until the game is fun again.

I usually do it after dying a few times when it's some fight I just want to get out of the way so I can do something I want. I also raise it about as often, when I'm in the mood for a combat game.

I played mostly on Adept, then it became too easy so I swapped to Master.

Then Master got tiring, and I didn't like how no-name bandits with garbage equipment were a challenge so I toned it down to Expert.

That's where it's stayed since. Normally once I find a good spot I stick with it.

Nope, there's always a way around the issue; if you're not tough enough to take the enemy head on, use potions or a different approach.

For the most part I play on expert because I think it's the 'sweet spot'. However I have a character on master just for the challenge. Imo turning down the difficulty means I'm not playing the game effectively, but I don't presume the same of others.

It depends on the fight. If I feel it is impossible I do, otherwise no. There was only 1 instance where it was impossible for me -- Orchendor on master difficulty as a mage - before resistances were broken. He was 100% immune to my spells, so I had to use a frost atronach and 1-hander. However, I couldn't kill him fast enough with that, because he would just teleport away and heal himself back up. I gave up after 45 minutes and set to adept.

Definitely. Especially being a mage fighting ancient dragons. It's nearly impossible and you die in 1-3 hits and god forbid you get bit by the dragon because sometimes that can be instant death.

I have to prove myself that I can survive on master without loading the game, to me, fun translates in challenging myself in a plethora of hard situations.

The only way I can play the game "properly balance" i.e. "realistically" is on Novice

I play on Expert.

Havent had to turn it down yet although I have had some issues with certian parts of the game.

If I'm having issues passing a certian part I be sure to save a lot and switch up my tactics to try and beat the section. If it's really hard I return to my home and pick up the right potions/posions/enchanted gear/companion to help me get through.

Recently (level 29) frost dragons have been 1 shoting me and it's a pain. I now know to take cover and wedge myself between some rocks etc. so that the dragon can't get me and then spam arrows at em. It also helps if the dragon is intrested in someone/something else and I can flank em.

the freak...

Spoiler
living under Horringbrew (sp?) meadery was 1 shotting me with magic spells and I finally passed him after 8 tries using animal alligence to keep him busy with skeevers, shooting him with a drain magika poison arrow, then rushing in and splitting his skull with my war axe.

there is a tactic to help out in any battle, just got to get creative sometimes.

I've been on Expert throughout my first playthrough and never turned it down. In fact i actually thought of turning it up to master but have decided to play master on my second playthrough.

I have only had a couple of situations where i died many times to the same enemy, but rather than turn down the difficulty i ran away like a coward and bought a ton of health potions before returning.

I turned it down from Master to Expert if that counts. Master was just a bit too much for my magic loving characters, though its nice for warriors. Expert seems to be a good balance for me.

master, always, the only times I cant handle a fight is when Im not geared/setup for it or when Im too low lvl.
(many people who report high spikes in dfficulty is usually when they are fighting mobs that arnt level scaled and are mugh higher level than them)

I have since the last patch, I'm tired of being 1 shotted by dragon breaths and master mages even though I have 650 health and 90% magic resistance.

either the last patch made something go very wrong or you are exagerating greatly... my pure mage didnt get one shotted at lvl 52 with just over half your health and no more than 50-75% resistance O.o

I occasionaly turn it up and down to give me more or less a challenge.

why must I/we be liars?
I always play rpg on max difficulty settings, I did try the lower setting to see how different they were, but I always do full content runs on the same max setting and never turn it down when I am having difficulty, I just use game mechanics to adapt.

I've had to go from Expert to Adept when things get difficult before, but never any lower than that.

No offence, but you're pretty bad or you have a pretty weak character if you have to lower the difficulty on this game. I haven't raised it to Expert or Master yet, but I will eventually. Oh and @Linkmaster, there's something called a Ward and there's something called the Become Ethereal Dragonshout. Dragonshouts are alot more useful and versatile than most people figure them to be. Having trouble fighting a dragon priest? Use Elemental Fury whilst dual-wielding. Having trouble surviving the onslaught of a Dragon's Frost/Fire breath? Use Become Ethereal. Need to get away from a Frost Troll who's about to deliver a killing blow? Use Whirwhind Sprint or Unrelenting Force.

With my first character I chose Apprentice and was on this until about LVL 40 when I put it up to Adept.
With my new character I have kept it on Adept and I almost cried because I had to fight about 10 Draugr and a Draugr Deathlord at LVL 9 which was super gay because when I first met one on my first character, I was about LVL 28 and I struggled with it then on Apprentice :( Though a few deaths later I killed him (lucky I was an Orc, BERSERKER RAGE) I will not change the difficulty because I think it is just right
