Upon checking out I figured I'd see if I could get approved for the free shipping. Upon filling out the required information I discovered they were asking for my SS#. I'm not dumb enough to just give that out that kind of information willy nilly every time some yahoo on the internet wants it.
Was it a box near the top of the checkout screen saying "You could save XX$$ on this order"? That's the sign up for the Amazon credit card and not Amazon Prime. That's why it asked for your SSN. Prime is found in the top toolbar on the right side of your screen (Try Prime).
I use Prime for about 50 orders a year and if they ever asked for that info, I'd tell them where to stick it.
If you're skittish, you can buy a $100 Amazon gift card at the grocery store, add the funds to your account and then buy a gift Prime subscription for yourself. Just use your email address as the recipient.
Come to think of it, I think it was. Nevertheless, I find it unnecessary for them to know my SS#, that's why I rejected the idea.
I have since signed up for Amazon Prime without the need for giving out my SS#.
Yes, I've ordered many, many things from Amazon. Including my coffee maker and coffee that I can't find around here. I'm a Prime member, too. There are some advantages to the Prime membership that I appreciate. I also subbed to Kindle Unlimited. Their shipping is usually on time; I think there was only one occasion when it was late, and it was weather related so everything was affected.
For anyone wanting to use a pre-paid card; you might want to check with Amazon again. It apparently depends on the card.

I use it all the time, one of the best online stores i think
I use Amazon all the time. I have given up on local shopping for the most part beyond groceries. Too many stores to find what I need. Hate the driving.
I have Prime Membership and it's great. Everything arrives in two days. I am too impatient to wait for free shipping. Plus they seem to have a larger selection of free stuff to stream than Netflix does (maybe it's about the same and I have exhausted Netflix offerings). But the Kindle Fire I just got my GF for her Birthday (supposed to have been a Christmas Present but she opened it early) is nicely integrated with the streaming side of Amazon. They also offer music streaming too. Another thing that is cool is if you buy a DVD, you can usually stream it right after buy it so no need to wait for the disk to show up. It is also the cheapest place to buy car parts. I bought a new grill for my Jeep for $27 and it was better than the OEM Grill that Jeep wanted $200 for.
No hassles on returns, they give you a label to print out and you drop it off at any UPS facility or shipper. If they know you, then you typically get a refund before the item returns, or maybe the return warehouse is real close.
I use it a lot. I just ordered the Gigabyte 970 graphics card for my computer when it was back in stock for a short time yesterday. I only use free shipping and don't have Prime. There was one time when shipping was taking a long time, but it just left the warehouse 2 days before the estimated delivery and still arrived on time. I still use some other websites for online shopping. I was almost going to order from Newegg yesterday but the card went out of stock, right when I was having internet connection problems.
I think they used to before over 5 years ago, but Ebay was why they stopped having it. I can't use Ebay since they only accept PayPal and I closed my account with them because of an issue that happened.
I'm a Prime member and I use it all the time for every time of product from PC gear to household goods. Its awesome.
When I'm not buying or selling sports cards I use Amazon. I love buying electronics through Amazon.
In my experience, Amazon does a good job of getting things shipped, usually. The thing that bugs me is that they do not charge your card/account until the item ships, so there may be a little delay from the time you order to the time it ships and your account is billed. I think the deciding factor is the availability of the product you are buying. "Only 5 left in Stock" items may not ship the next day.
I am unsure of the exchange rate, but they used to give free regular shipping for orders over $25. Not too long ago, they upped the ante to $35 for free regular shipping.
