Do you use lore-friendly names for your characters

Post » Fri Oct 11, 2013 12:55 am

So I know that a lot of people (myself included) use lore specific names but some also use names that aren't lore specific.

What do you do? Lore specific names (Drathin Irathi for dunmer, Brahn Red-Axe for Nords, Elurity for Altmer, Septimix Maximus for Imperial, etc) or do you use non lore specific names? Milfseeker, Elf Slayer, Danny, etc.

Yes, although when I first bought Oblivion my first three characters were a Redguard named 'Will Smith', an Altmer named 'Josef Stalin' and a Nord called 'Ronald Raygun.'

Then something actually occured to me, I was taking the game seriously and enjoyed it and the lore so much I started using lore friendly names, purchased Redguard, Battlespire, Morrowind and the rest was history. Haven't used a non-lore friendly name since Oblivion, even though last names are often difficult for me to come by. I often put titles in my name for things I am later going to become such as 'Archmage' or 'Commander-Paladin' or 'Legate/General' ect.

I've used characters named Asajj Ventress and Palpatine, named for the Star Wars characters I based their looks and personalities on. As well as Guts, from Berserk, using http://bagserk.blogspot.com/2012/09/berserk-races-for-skyrim-with-face.html mod.

Right now I am playing a character named Invictus. I'm not sure if that one could count as lore friendly or not.

I also imagine TESO will have a lot of non-lore names. Can't wait until the famous hero 'DragnslyrxxxFusRoDah8' becomes Emperor of Tamriel

Both.

90% lore-friendly, 10% "Mr. Skittles" and such.

I always use lore-friendly names. I'll use a TES name generator if I can't think of one. I'll also look at the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Names of names of the races and make something similar based on what's there.

For the most part I'd like to think my character's names are lore friendly. But that may not be the case depending on exactly what is lore-friendly? I mean it's not like we are all experts in nomenclature of fantasy language or TES lore for that matter. Since my own knowledge is limited the character names I came up with may actually be lore-unfriendly even if it's not intended that way.

My first character's name is Estrella and I'm not sure if it's actually a good Altmer name, I was learning Spanish back then and it just seems fitting. And I won't change it no matter how strange it may sound for an Altmer for nostalgia. Similarly I had a Nord named Patti in Skyrim. I'm not sure again but like the previous case I won't change it even if it isn't lore friendly

I find it extremely dufficult to roleplay with outlandish or lore unfriendly names. I simply cannot do it.

I don't really think in terms of lore when I roleplay. This extends to names as well. But I do tend choose names that feel right to me. Right now I'm playing a Nord character named Aemyn Eawulf. I have no idea if this is a "lore friendly" name or not. But it feels right to me. I've played Bosmer and Dunmer characters with names like Nariene, Fariele and Amaryis. Again, no idea if these are "lore friendly" and I don't really care. It's my game and I determine what is "lore" and what is not "lore."

Interesting. I have no trouble at all with that. (Although most of my characters have names that would probably "fit" the lore.)

One of my more outlandish Oblivion characters is named Barb-Ann. She's from Boston, and the last thing she remembers before waking up in the Imperial Prison is that she was crossing the street, and was hit by a beer truck. She's definitely a roleplay, and a lot of fun, too.

I'm with P.W. on this. It's my game, and I play it for fun. That means breaking the rules sometimes, just because I can. :)

I've used Griever for my Morrowind main for years now, though I did come back and say it was a name he gave himself and that his real name is Kyr.

But as for everyone else, yes, they all have lore appropriate names. Talin, Tiberius, Victoria, Conner and the like, with the exception of the Elven named characters, where I just try and think of something that sounds similar.
