Do you use MODS?

Post » Thu Apr 08, 2010 8:44 pm

MODERATORS - Please don't move this topic to the MOD section, I want to encourage people who haven't tried them to give them a go and it won't over there.

I used to be a bit nervous of MODS, I wasn't sure how to install them and I thought they might destabilise the game but then I watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_ix-dOGfXs&feature=related (you only need to watch half of part 1) which explained how to use the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36901(FOMM) to install and manage them.

They can add whole new areas of content, like my current favourite "A World of Pain", add interiors to boarded up building, improve the look of the game or just make minor changes like adding location points to Camp McCarran or removing the Strips interior gates.

Just about every wish or complaint I read on this forum can be answered with just a tiny download, you don't have to wish for a ghoul companion or some F3 weapon was available, you can have it and yet not that many people seem to use them, so this thread is to encourage people who haven't done so yet to give them a go.

I use them alot. Everything from new areas, weapons, armor, to mechanics changes. (I used one that returned the Companion limit to how it was in FO2 chr/2, and one that rebalanced the game to use more classic stats and combat. Less HP and real DT along with DR for armor.)

If the game doesn't have at least ten mods installed I get bored easily. Already played once vanilla, it's time for me to get an AK47! And a jet pack. And a M2 Browning. And a few cute outfits. And a body replacer. And a texture pack that has a larger resolution than a commodore 64 can render. And a community bugfix just to get the damn game to run in the first place. aaaaand then a custom race. And maybe just for good measure I'll put an M1 Garand skin over This Machine. Perhaps after that I will install a casino mod that adds more people...and then one that raises the max bet, comp levels and ban level....and then one that automatically unbans me...oh and this stupid fast timescale has to go, the wasteland just doesn't feel big if it gets dark 10 minutes after the sun rises...and that reminds me, gotta have a weather mod...and Fellout, because radiation isn't orange either...and then I gotta fix the UI, the font is the size of a container ship and some parts are clunky...OH, and then I need NVSE to make all this crap work together...can't forget my night-vision sunglasses, either, because only a bad-ass mofo wears shades at night...

Basically, if it exists in the game, and I'm not satisfied with it, I will modify it, and I really don't care if it's not lore friendly to have a Motorola Droid pip-boy replacer....which, by the way, I would absolutely love to have, if any of you clever modders would care to reskin the Readius...

You need to add a new category:

"No - but I'd really, really, really like to"

for all us console players.

There isn't a single place you could take a screenshot in my game without seeing something modified :hehe: And pretty much all the behind-the-screen stuff is modded too. That's what i love about Bethesda, their games are wonderfully customisable :)

For Fallout New Vegas, I switched from PS3 to PC (have both) because I wanted to learn to mod. I had been thinking about it for a long time and finally asked for help to learn how and people were great. There are a lot of resources online to learn how and it wasn't hard.

I'm really glad I did because FNV had so many problems. There was one problem that someone here made a fix for and that allowed me to keep playing the game *I* wanted to play. Without that, FNV would have gone into the drawer and I would have been more than disappointed. The companions are my favorite part of the game and I use the Unlimited Companions mod when I want to lead a squad. Sometimes you don't want that but it's great for the battle at the Dam. I use a mod to change camera angle and just recently, I tried one of the quests someone had written. It was new content for the game and I saw the Bison Steve Hotel get a complete make-over. That was a lot of fun. If you can do it, play on PC so you can mod. :)

In the Skyrim forum, it was reported that Todd said they wanted to make it so console users could use mods. I don't know if that means writing them too but with new consoles coming eventually, it may be possible if the corporations can get their heads together.

No, I'm a console player.
But if I wasn't I'd probably mod the game on my own.
Things I don't know how to do I would download, like companions and stuff.
But even then I'd modify the downloads to my preference.
I'd make the game hard again.
Balanced.

Basically "fix" what Bethesdian didn't/couldn't.

I use new animations, type 3 females, new males, new textures, Ultra-realistic lighting, backpacks, energy weapon de-nurfers, companion alterers, and the monster mod, which is the closest thing to Marts in New Vegas. No glitches, no problems, the game the way I like it.

Saying that, that's not a patch on what I used in Fallout 3. Dozens lol.

Sometimes I think of getting a console, but I don't think I could play the game vanilla. I modded it almost from day 1.

Exactly. There are some things that they can not include in the game, and that is what i use mods for.

Also for changes that are not for everyone's taste and/or lore incompatible, such as new dungeons full of Super Mutants :hehe:

I recently got a new laptop to play Fallout 3 on the P.C. for the mods only to discover there is no way the game is compatible.

I love mods. I add any mod that I think looks mildly interesting, uninstalling it if it doesn't fit my tastes. I'm not stupid about it though. I always make sure to trial mods that I'm unsure about by setting a hard save beforehand and removing all traces if I don't like it.

No, but I plan to. I don't really like to use big mods until I know most or all of the official patches and content are out and won't be coming in the near future.

I think once you get into it, it's pretty hard to look back at the vanilla game and go, "I actually played through the game like that once?" That's the feeling I get a lot of times when playing FNV, and most likely FO3 if I did install mods as well on that.

There isn't a single place you could take a screenshot in my game without seeing something modified :hehe:

I would probably fall under this too but only because of Texture Packs and Graphical Mods.

Great replies folks, far more modders around than I thought. I'd really like the people who voted "No - nervous" to post why though.

Yes, I use mods...but only after I've played the game once or twice without any mods. After that, tho, it's open season. Usually I stick with mods I make myself, just small changes or personal preference tweaks. But I occasionally use others that makes large changes if it fits my playstyle. Go through periods where I try a lot of mods/test/goof off but usually end up deleting them.

Increased spawns, multiple companions, clothing colors, environment enhancing, and occasional weapon tweaks/tomfoolery are mostly what I focus on. Generally not into huge modifications/overhaul of the vanilla game. Just little details/tweaks.

Console player, so my vote is obvious. I'd really like to.

I wouldn't use anything out there though; I would mod it myself.

At earlier playthroughs I just use bugfixes and interface mods. 3rd playthrough and I go bat[censored] insane.
One thing I avoid is mods that add new items to the game. I like tweaking the existing weapons instead of getting new ones.

Plenty. Very few mods actually harm anything if you remove them after install, and if they do, they will say so. There is no reason to be wary of them.

But yeah, I use tweaks, both community-made and self-made, as well as content, item, etc.

The best mod I've done is a personalized texture for one of my characters, with beard scruff, scars, etc. and then pasting that onto a customized race to put in imperfections, and finalizing it with the receding hairstyle mod. My avatar is an old character that just has the scruff.

No. I'm a purist. Canon all the way.

"But won't you get bored?!? zomgpewpew?"

No, replayability is high in Fallout from the get go and I do actually play other games as well.

But I have no problem understanding why people like to create and try out stuff, I just don't feel any need to myself.
