Do you use Steam Workshop, Nexus, or a combo?

Post » Tue Jun 11, 2013 11:38 pm

I'm uninstalling everything, cleaning house after FINALS this week and I'm amped to start fresh after a four month hiatus. I just would like to know where you guys are getting the majority of your mods, what you're using, and if it's possible to mix and match from both sources (or the pitfalls that can bring).

So what are you using? And there are literally hundreds of graphics mods out there for lighting, shadows, sun glare, etc. Which ones are the best to use?

Thanks for sharing!

I personally haven't touched the workshop, i hate the way they sorted stuff on there, its damn near impossible to find anything there, mod sizes are limited, and i dont have as much controll compared to when I use nexus.

The SW is not something i advise anyone using. There are several reasons....

  1. You must actually be online everytime you want to play as that's when they load the mods.
  2. There upload size is limited so some of the truly epic mods that rival Official mods, will never see the Workshop.
  3. You don't have control of what is being changed or added.

NMM, or any mod manager is better than SW. Nexus has no size limit.

It's not advised to use both. If there is a mod that is exclusive to SW, then you need to load it up, and open your Data folder. Then copy the mod esp file to another folder and log out of Steam.

Now you have the mod file. Package that into a FOMOD and install it with NMM. Run BOSS to sort the Load Order and you are good to go.

For those of you who are familiar with Nexus, can you point me to a link that can explain like I'm 5 how to properly install the mod manager? I know from reading the nexus forums that there is a program that launches the game. I'm uh, special, when it comes to computers.

Yeah, once I'm in a comfort zone with PC mods I'll probably make the switch. Right now though I'm just getting my feet wet.

I use a combination of both, but I am EXTREMELY selective about what I install from the SW, for reasons already stated. This is why I have around 130 mods installed, but only 2-5 are from the Workshop.

Do you run into any issues with load order? One of the things I read on the Nexus forums is that load order is important. Is there something different you have to do since you use the Workshop too?

Have used the Nexus since the beginning. I used the different mod managers for Fallout and the past ES games so was easy to pick up on how to work the Nexus.

Find the same problems with the SW everyone else seems to. While its cool to see them try it just doesn't fulfill my wants.

It's just not good practice to use multiple managers. Those SW mods will be uninstalled and reinstalled every time you stop and start playing.

It is best to just copy the file and make a new package to install with NMM. That is basic user techniques that one should get in a habit of doing. A responsible user is a happy user. If you start out doing the right thing, you will have a better gaming experience with less trouble.

Yes. Load Order is very important. That is where http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6/?comes in.

I use both well did but now mainly due to a certain fore linked YouTube channel I only use the nexus but I do still have some mods from sw that nexus don't have.

Like septim smithing an the ethereal house spell.

I'd also say install skyui if not already

I use both Nexus and Steam when am not playing vanilla SKYRIM which is pretty rare these days considering how perfect and complete SKYRIM is. I have not been this satisfied with a modless game since DAGGERFALL, FALLOUT 3 and NEW VEGAS. FALLOUT 3 though kicks action packed exploding nuclear missiles when it comes to mods .

I strictly use the Nexus. I tried using Steam twice, and both times the mods I downloaded totally [censored] up my save with obscene amounts of bloating. Fortunately I was smart enough to (or paranoid enough) to game with those mods loaded for only a few minutes at a time. Within a half hour I was convinced that I was right all along...it was a bad mistake even trying out Steam.

Never, ever touch Steam. Go get you mods from the Nexus, your game will thank you for it...and also learn how to manage your load order using NMM, or if you feel brave enough, learn how to use Wrye Bash. There are versions of this for every Beth Game I've played so far, and Fallout 4 likely won't be any different.

If you're forbidding the Steam Workshop entirely, you're missing out on just as many impressive mods as if you were exclusively forbidding the Nexus. There's plenty of authors who can create works of art that want nothing to do with the Nexus.

I use Nexus, manually install mods and run BOSS to keep the load order sorted.

Have yet to touch the workshop. That Nexus mod manager is just so nice and hard to argue against. Maybe Ill visit the Steam Workshop at some point.

I say Senor - I think I've been doing it COMPLETELY wrong...

Basically what I do is I use both indiscriminately. I also use NMM and Boss to handle things. I run the game through the SKSE... it's a complete MESS, but it seems to do the job. .

Stormwinds you have an awesome name.

player.placeatme 00099f2f x

x = the amount your computer can handle. Go to a city and try 50 for starters.

And as a general rule of thumb, make sure you make a separate save. Cuz...
