Do You Want Books In Fallout 4 To Be Like Elder Scrolls?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:55 am

In Elder Scrolls, when you read a book, you actually read it. Not like in Fallout where you just press it and it disappears, in Fallout 4 I want to read my books, like in Elder Scrolls. I would like to read all the issues of Grognak The Barbarian, and read those other books, do you think we should have readable books in Fallout 4?

Yes, reading a skill book that looks like a comic would add so much to the world.

I never really read much in Skyrim since when I play I usually feel like I need to rush and get my guy to the next level before my wife comes home and I need to turn the game off. It could be a neat feature for those that want it, and maybe it would add to the immersion you feel if there actually was something useful in the book.

Sidenote: I did collect every book I could get my hands on in one Skyrim play through, with the intention of going back and reading them one day, but I have yet to do so. Since I might do one very long play through of 4, having such a thing as readable books might be nice to do once I have my compound built and some leisure time in game.

I am not voting since I am on the fence about it.

That poll is the most depressing thing in gaming that I've seen all year; (current score 4:0).

By the Nine Divines, yes! But sadly, in reality, it takes too much time :( I hope they surprise us this time!

But why :unsure2: ? The books would still function same as before (at least I assume that's what OP means) you can just read a bit about the pre-war culture, or maybe some less known facts about the weapon type the book is for. Plus it would be one of the very few things in recent FO games that you can actually read.

I think it could be quite a cool thing (although Chinese Army Special Ops Training Manual could be pretty hard to read for most people  ). Come to think of it, I wonder how in FO3 you were able to improve your sneak skill by reading it despite not knowing Chinese :D ?

I think it would be cool, it would add a lot of details about pre-war america. Although if i read the same issue of grognak a dozen times it would be pretty lame

If it's depressing, why won't you vote for the other option to make the ratio better?

That's why books in TES comes in volumes! It would be great if there is Grognak issue 1, 2, and 3... (But only 1 will increase your skill, because, you know, having too much skill books will ruin balance for sure...)

Because it's posted in the wrong topic, by mistake; (my fault too).

As for Elderscrolls/FO4 books, I would like it very much if they implemented a subset of HTML (for the conventional books) and allowed both the designers and modders the ability to format their own books, and include illustrations. Technically, one might even be able to make an electronic pre-schooler book that talks [reads aloud] when you push the button; (You'd find this in the child's room, or an office waiting room).

@whiteguy1x: Indeed, as per it being a mistaken post on my part.

Oops, I didn't know you posted in the wrong topic :( I'm sorry for that comment I made...

Btw, what book would you think would look the best when it's made like in TES? I personally wanted to see Grognak and Guns and Bullets...

I never read a book in TES, only one that's essencial for a quest.

but I think this is a cool idea. Sure, my vote is yes.

Not at all; in context it seems rude to me as well.

There is a trend in online comics for motion assisted narratives. It would be neat to see the 2077 issue of Grognak, with lightly animated pages, rather like this Witcher comic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjifvPaFoIg (Though perhaps not quite so loud.)

*Only it would be a commercial product in the Fallout world, that kids and teenagers there would have been accustomed to buying.

It's really good! I hope Bethesda has the time and budget to do that... But that's unlikely, right?

Then I hope somebody that's dedicated enough will make that...

Ah, I forgot something!
If the Wasteland Survival Guide appears in this game (If the time setting of the game is conflicting with this, please someone correct me), I would be really curious about how it will look like!

I would love to see SOME books, not too many though since it would be kind of weird to have a Skyrim sized collection in the Wasteland, where as we have seen in previous games, most of the books are ruined.

I feel like that fact would make the books all the cooler though, since the ones you found intact would be like treasures, little pieces of the Pre-War world that survived. It would give me quite the rush to be exploring some ruined building or failed Vault and stumble across a book or two that survived everything that happened around them.

I'd love to see readable books. I've always wanted to be able to read the skill books and I really wanted to read the two different versions of the Wasteland Survival Guide in FO3.

Since we helped write it in FO3, I'd love to actually be able to read it too.

and ummm, yeah, I'd like to be able to read skill books, but it's certainly no deal breaker if we can't.

There's plenty of "books" to read in Fallout 3 - they're just mostly on terminals, or stuck into the Notes section of your Pip-Boy. True, the skill books aren't readable, but most of them don't really have a whole lot of "lore" to them.... many are just magazines or textbooks on topics related to a particular skill. The text in them wouldn't be all that amazing, I'd think. Medical journals? Military training manuals? Eh.

But interesting things to read, no matter if they're notes on paper, electronic diaries, or computer files? Sure, it was always fun to find more of those in Fallout 3, and I'm expecting the same in FO4.

I agree. Although it'd be fun to be able to flip through Grognak.

No, because I am quite fond of not having my eyes burned out by reading eldritch scrolls.
