I in turn understand your point and I don't think we're going to make any headway on coming to an agreement. If you value playing after the 'ending' (literally, that - in and of itself with no added content - is enough for you) more than a better finale than I can't do anything except offer my condolences.
It's a very weird thing, I admit, but it's a weird and fun thing. Most games don't make after the end fun. ('cause the MQ and quests were where all your challenge came from) So in most games I don't mind if they don't let me play after the end. (but I would want a new-game+) In gamesas games though, their world design makes after the end a fun experience, and thus I consider it a plus to the product. And gamesas endings have always been lackluster anyway. I mean, the ending of Morrowind amounts to stab a heart, Akulakhan falls into a volcano and crazy daedra lady talks to you as you stumble out of a dwemer ruin. I don't think not letting us play after the end will get them to really improve on this particular aspect.
1 - I want there to be a way around your character dying
yay?
2 - How is "I'm going to go and do some mining now, or maybe I'll do some side quests until I'm burned out" as climactic as your character giving their life to save the world? And on point 1 - I don't want it to be impossible to avoid. I just want it to be the default state (á la DA:O)
It's not very climatic at all, the ending is hurt. (not by much though, gamesas endings would be lack-luster no matter what) With this particular company and their products though, I'll let it slide.
3 - Since when was continuing after the ending the point of TES? I would call it a fairly minor aspect of the series so far to be honest. I think it's laughable that you think that I'm "missing the point of TES" just because I think that PC death in the finale adds to the climix of the story. I'm not missing the point - TES revolves around the player and what they want to do, not the story. I don't argue that. I just think that the main quest should be the primary focus of the game if the player directs enough attention towards it, and that default character death at the end of it would make it more epic.
Whoever says continuing after the ending is the point of TES is crazy. Why would that be the point to any game series? I mean, doesn't being worthy of pointeness imply it's a major selling point? After the end playability is kind of a nice niche thingy really. It's not something most games do well, so it's good to have at least one series that consistently does it well.
