If you want to describe BRINK to your friends how do you do

Post » Fri Jul 16, 2010 11:47 am

Say it's like Shadowrun, Borderlands, Monday Night Combat, Enemy Territory, and Mirrors Edge. But on steroids.

I told my friends, this game looks immense, revolutionary! The greatest effort at a team oriented game id seen since Team Fortress Classic. The most excited id been about a game release since Halo 2. Imagine sprinting across a street with bullets pinging of the road and the sound of explosions and your team mates shouts, sliding through an open doorway knocking a guy to the ground raising quickly and shot gunning his friend in the face turning and finishing the first guy off then spinning back round to deal with the shotgunned guy whose getting up. Sprinting back out the door way and back to where you came from, this time you leap up to a ledge and hoist yourself up into a vantage point and begin putting fire on the guys down the street while your team advances forward.

Definitely getting the Mirror's Edge + Bad Company 2 vibes..

Bit of Killzone and some COD in there as well. There's evidently plenty of strong influence from other top games and a strong variety as well.

I bought Mirror's Edge recently just to get the feel of that running, flowing, wall-running, roof-hopping fun. And when it flows, it's a great FPV experience in it's own right. Add in a solid FPS element and a balanced objective-based multiplayer that focusses on team-play and you've got an even better gaming experience.

On top of that, stick in the wide range of customisation available from tattoos to psycho masks to various weapon addons to individual accents. Do it all offline, online co-op or in 8vs8 multiplayer as well.

Really has the makings of a dream game. Let's just hope it cuts the mustard and plays well. It looks uniquely artistic in it's design as well, which sets it apart from the typical popular war shooters.

"It takes place on ‘The Ark’, which is this immense artificial floating city..."

...

"...built at sea as part of a contemporary ‘green’ vision..."

Ok, fine.

What I really tell them is that its an FPS with Parkour. That's about it for the hook. Anyone who doesn't get curious when I say that is no longer a friend.

After that, +3 for videos.

If I don't have a computer handy, then the next thing i mention is that its objective and team driven. Then maybe classes and levels and skills.

I explain what it's like in my own words (tailored to what they like), explaining that it takes the best bits of half a dozen games if they still don't get it. I also link them the site.

I then explain how it's going to be epic in competitive play. ^_^

I told him it's similar to Timesplitters, covering look and level of action comparable to the MP and the campaign in the structure of how the gamemode actually lays itself out.

I just say it's a game with TF2 classes, Mirror's Edge parkour, Borderland's weapons and a pinch of badass thrown into the mix!

Honestly it's all about being good at public speaking and knowing what people like and dont like about video games. You also have to know your friend, and have watched him play certain games. See what he gets mad at and what he doesnt get mad at. Then find some things in Brink where you can say "yea its not like *insert game* cus you get to do this instead".

You just have to know what they would like about the game and hype it up.

THEN show them videos and say remember when i told you "..." well here it is. I have a soccer friend who always loved molotovs in games. So guess what the first two things i told him about brink? Molotovs and slide tackling lol. He got a little giddy.

Then you can start naming off the things that make the game great in general and why they are a better way to do it than other games. It's a lot more difficult than well this is whats in it. That's boring. Do you think when Hitler was tryig to rally german support that he just said "well jews are bad, i want to get rid of them." NOOO he played it up in a certain way.

Sorry this is long but im a game designer and thats one of the things that comes with the job.

Psychology rules the world!

Technically, it's made by Splash Damage, but more people trust Bethesda, so keep that up.

No offense but it sounds like you are manipulating your friends. Why not show them videos and let them make their own conclusions about the game?

For me personally I see quite a few similarities to Shadowrun but I agree that Brink is a unique IP. As a result I send my friends a simple message that says: 'Watch this video: I've got the game preordered already but it reminds me of Shadowrun. Let me know what you think."

They're my friends. I know what they like in a game, what they want in a game, and what (like myself) will make them more likely to want to play Brink over TF2 in addition to linking them videos, forums, the wiki, and the official site with the dev blog of course. If trying to convince someone of something in an entirely open and friendly manner is manipulation then there's something wrong with this picture.

I tell them this.

TF2 and COD/Halo had a child. While both were away fighting, Borderlands taught it how to draw.

Then i show them videos and convince them to buy it =3

That's quite presumptuous of you. I wonder what else you think you know everything about.

Anyway, the point is that you are tailoring your description to your friends in an effort to 'sell' them on the idea of Brink. By only listing the things that (you think) they like you are setting them up to be disappointed when it includes things that they do not enjoy. Expectations are everything and if you are only giving them the things they love most in your descriptions then the game can only fall short of those expectations.

Knowing what your friends like enough to get the interested and look for themselves isn't as bad as you make it out to be. I suppose I could be wrong, but I doubt they will buy a game just based on one friend's opinion of it before release.

He provides the hook, if they like the rest of the game then they will get it.

By correcting them when they say that Brink is like borderlands. Saying no it's more like Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 and Assassins Creed/Prince Of Persia on coke and steroids. :)
