I seriously wish someone would explain the whole "cravings" thing to me. A couple of weeks ago, my wife came home with a can of hominy and a pickled egg. I mean who eats that? I didn't even know what hominy was, I thought it was a can of corn until I opened it. She also had this strawberry jag that lasted for about a month. But on the bright side, I haven't had to get up at 5 am to go to Hardee's to get a sausage and gravy biscuit so I guess it could be worse.
The Lasagna Queen didn't get much in the way of cravings. With our first, though, she went through milk and yogurt like it was going out of style -- but she cut back after finding out that drinking a gallon of milk in a day really didn't agree with her. With our second and third, she wanted Guinness -- but couldn't have it.
Cravings are usually a signal that your body is short on a nutrient, and subconsciously you crave foods that you believe provide that nutrient. Those cravings, like the cliche http://www.cupcakeproject.com/2009/02/pickle-and-ice-cream-cupcakes.html, are not based on rational thought, culinary considerations, or concern for your partner. When you're pregnant, that baby is going to take everything it needs at your expense, and it's not unusual, for example, to run short on calcium, or iron, or B vitamins, etc. With the exception of out-of-control cravings for sugary food, junk food, or things that aren't even food, there's nothing wrong with them, and they're good for a laugh years later.
