Do you want realistic intoxication?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:54 am

Do you reckon it'd be cool if we gott more than just a few perks/deductions from taking alcohols/drugs in Oblivion, or would you guys like a more hands on approach to it, e.g. animations and the such?

I say yes! If my character stumbles around at bit at least.

Something like GTA 4's intoxication might work for drinking, where the player stumbles around and falls over for a short while.

Exactly what I was thinking of actually.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I'd like to go on a psychotic trip, see things extraordinary - though it'd be hard to implement that well. Stumbling about after a drink would still be sweet. Realism = Goodness. ^_^

I don't know how far stumbling around is feasible, but screen effects would be nice at the very least.

I dont think its necessary, mainly because alcohol has an effect. if they took out any positive effects, and just made you more terrible at everything, some screen effect may be worth it. but I dont see it happening.

I would like to see something like the poison effect from The Witcher happen when one drinks too many potions at one time (vision becomes spotty and blurred).

I think The Witcher does it well, but the alcohol takes too long to wear off in that game.

Race and size would need to play a factor too. It should take a hell of a lot more to get a big sturdy Nord plastered than a wirey little Bosmer or Breton.

Ya. Drugs and Alcohol should have an effect. But you know some people will get all up in arms about it.

Do you mean ImageSpace effects? No; I had more than enough of that in Fallout 3 & NV
(I never understood why they did not disable them if and when the Player changed to third person).
I suppose I would not mind if they only occurred while in first person ~and never happened in 3rd.

If you mean body animations... Sure.

Stumbling for alcohol, colorful hallucinations for skooma and moon sugar.

As long as it was somewhat realistic - no "tripping out" on booze, and it shouldn't have an instantaneous effect - especially as I play as a Nord most times - it would be embarrassing to be paraletic after just a few drinks :P (just found out paraletic "does not exist in the written form". So there you go.) I like the idea of different speech options when drunk, though.

I think just some screen effects, it's such a small part of the game that it would be cool to add, but not to take too much away from other departments. I could go into what I think the parallels are between TES drugs and RL drugs, but I'd rather not get this thread closed. I'm fairly sure skooma and moon sugar are just stims though, so it should make your character really fast for a short period, then make the screen get all annoying and blurry for the come down.

I think for those who wish that this was in the game istead of somekind of human interaction gameplay is really wasting the games pointentional!

I would love to see different effects for different substances. With alcohol just have the screen go wavy and make the controls harder to walk in a straight line. But for the drugs of Tamriel, make it an acid like trip. Colors get brighter, people's faces get distorted and things start to look cartoony. It's kind of lame in Fallout how you just get +stats or something. I want visual trips.

A graphics programmer can work his best visual magic in a vain attempt to represent what he believes or knows of the impression, but he cannot match them to your brain activity and translate the emotions and synesthesia of the experience. Delivering a sense of this kind of recreation to Skyrim because you 'reckon it's cool' could be taken more like a statement from the developers that drugs and alcohol are okay for teens. Yes, I know about the greenmote from Shivering Isles and I say that it was very irresponsible of BETHESDA to have a quest that entertains it.

It's like having some pusillanimous stoner who thinks herb is sacred and who wobbles his D average mentality into your home while you are elsewhere so that he can educate your teen on how his loser ganja will give them knowledge and make them down to earth with everyone. Of course your teen is eating this up because nothing is more important to them than being in with the flunkees, and soon they are in what they think is a deep conversation about life, that is really just comparing everything to being stoned while being high. Then your teen has one thing to equate everything to with their new imbecilic philosophy and you can do the math for the consequences.

So you can understand how it feels to wonder where BETHESDA 'reckons' it's cool for a TES expansion. For a mature audience, fine. Not teen.

Well Skyrim will most likely be rated M, so bring on the tripping!

Realism = Animations For Your Character Puking Their Guts Out.

Although come to think, that's a good thing I guess...we've got people calling for the "must-have" feature of being able to see your feet in first person when you look down, now with realistic drunkenness you could see them when you puke on them. Win-win! :D
