Do you want Skyrim to follow The Infernal City

Post » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:13 pm

Personally, I think that Bethesda won't stick to what happened in the book. Why? Because it seems unfair to people who didn't read the book that some events they don't know about happened in between the last game and this one. So my guess is there are two possible outcomes.

- The story does not pay attention to the Infernal City.

- The story takes place before the Infernal City.

Yeah, can anyone confirm to me whether the book is canon or not? Because some of the stuff mentioned in the book (which I haven't read) seems very full-on to the ES universe, such as the Argonians overtaking Morrowind and such. It could potentially ruin the whole lore of the series in a way.

By the way OP, I wouldn't suggest putting in an option as silly as OMG POTATOES!!! ever again, since it turns the whole poll into a bit of a joke as people like me, who think they're funny, like to choose that option rather than a more appropriate and useful one.

If they weren't going to use the books, they wouldn't have commissioned them in the first place. I'm certain they'll use them, and the game will be post-Infernal City (and IC sequel). It won't be too difficult to stick the relevant info into in-game books for people who don't read the novel to keep everyone up to speed (besides, it's not like any of the info in the novel is going to be particularly key to the story of Skyrim).

EDIT: yes, I do recall them saying it's canon, although I don't have a source handy.

I just read a quick wikipedia blurb about it and while I am fine either if Skyrim is set before, during or after the book I do hope it is canon. The kind of setting elements in the book is the type of stuff I like in TES, less generic fantasy and more unique and weird elements.

Hell, I be happy going there in a TES game in general. Hmm... A entirely urban TES game, that be a lot of fun.

The books are cannon, as confirmed on the blog.

Yes, the games should follow the lore. Just because people didn't buy it or didn't like it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

What Lady Nerevar said, and it should be after the Infernal City.

To to mention, not everyone who played Morrowind played Oblivion. And not everyone who played Daggerfall played Morrowind.

They can reference things without alienating people.

Yup they are canon.Game developers do this all the time. They won't make it absolutely necessary to read the books to understand the plot in Skyrim obviously.

Hay why would they go through the trouble of having a book written and then suddenly decide, lol, it didn't happen!!! I think it should be based during or after the events. Also all the refugees from Morowind will give Skyrim more diversity and such.

The book was terrible, but it is canon, and therefore the events have happened in the TES world.

I doubt they will randomly not use the lore from the books all because not everyone bought them. That's like saying not everyone bought Morrowind or Oblivion so they shouldn't reference those events in Skyrim.

I hope it takes after.

I think that the line in the trailer, "Their defeat was merely a delay," is speaking of the assumed victory that will be told in the second book.

A couple people actually voted for Potatos well I can't blame them its the safe option

I hope its after the events of Infernal City as I'd be disapointed if it wasn't.

Wasn't there a blurb online for the book at one point, that said that The Elder Scrolls V will take place 200 years after Oblivion (the book is something like 45 years after)? I seem to recall that it was quickly retracted too...

Waterstones had this in their initial synopsis, which likely came from the reviewer edition's revealing about TES:V.

The book has happened, as it is canon, afaik. It's not good (apparently), but canon (I presume).

During/after, as (IIRC) we know that Skyrim takes place at the very least the same amount of years after Oblivion as the Infernal City.

Unfortunately, The Infernal City is canon, and I'm pretty sure it has been leaked that TES V will take place after it.

A teen adventure novel. Pulp fiction. Morrowind devastated and conquered by the Argonians, the White Gold Tower ruled by a bandit warlord. A cheap attempt to make the fanbase forget the wasted heroism in Morrowind and Oblivion, paving the way for their upcoming console action game. :P

I can;t really see this vote as fair, seeing as we have yet to get the second part of the story. As of now it might be fine and we can all agree with it, but after part 2, who knows, maybe the whole world blows up, and then I think we can all safely agree we don't want the book to be canon. Not that the Devs would let Mr. Keyes do such a thing, but it is just an example.

Whether you think the book is good or not is a matter of opinion folks. I advise everyone read it for themselves. I mean seriously it's only http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-Infernal-City/dp/0345508017
I personally enjoyed it. Especially for a book based on a video game franchise.

It is cannon, and the game will be after the events of the second book. As Lady N and Hellmouth said it would be ridiculous for them to have a book written only to say... "naahhh."

Why wouldn't a canon book in the series be mentioned when canon backstory is brought up? It wouldn't make any sense to comission an award-winning fantasy author to write a book in your ongoing fantasy series if you weren't going to use it. Fah-durp.

EDIT: I even though I do enjoy it I can understand why some people don't. But some people not liking it isn't enough of a legitimate reason to pull a canon discontinuity on it.

Honestly it's not the bandit warlord that's interesting. It's his son that's interesting.
Spoiler
A spoiled brat who doesn't know he's a spoiled brat being catered to to live out his fantasy life as a hero, only to find out that his whole life is a lie and he needs to find out how to find his real self... I think some day he could become a good Emperor, and I'd love to see an Emperor Attrebus or tales of his deeds in Skyrim.

Obviously I'm a fan of the book. I can't wait for the second part, and I love the main character which helps things. I like that the main character is a Breton alchemist, rather than a typical sword swinging fantasy hero.

I thought the Infernal City was fascinating and reading the story made me want to experience the horrors first hand. It made me wish it was an expansion for Oblivion

The TIC lore is very interesting and new in my opinion. I say that we should make a go for it and let the events take place after the books.
