Do you want to start in prison?

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 3:15 pm

The reason we like starting as a prisoner (in prison) is because it's been a tradition since Arena. The reason I personally wouldn't want to choose where I start is because when Bethesda knows where the player starts, they can craft the world around that to create a more fulfilling starting experience (like for example, the first time you step out of the vault in FO3). Not to mention, it makes sense for enemies and creatures to get stronger the further you go from where you start, but if you could choose where you start, Bethesda wouldn't be able to do that.

Daggerfall You didn't start in a prison

I like starting in jail. Make your own reason why your there. It works. You could start out anywhere and it would be the same outcome, making up why you started there. I hope its the same for TES V!, TES VII, TES VIII, and so on.

I do like the prison/prisoner starts. Choosing where to start would be great, but it would be too much work for the developers to create engaging/compelling start for the main story for each start location. When I want to start elsewhere I install a mod...

Well, the poll results show that Bethesda made the right decisions.

Love the prison start. In fact, it's probably my favourite part of the game. Getting your bearings in the world and having to work hard to get decent equipment after you've randomly appeared from jail is extremely exciting and engrossing.
Besides, it's not like it always the same old thing. I dunno about Arena, but the starts in Morrowind and Oblivion were extremely different. One, you just hopped off a boat into a small seaside town, whereas in the other you emerge from sewers after fighting through them for half an hour, ending up outside the major city in the game.
This sounds different yet again, seeing as how it looks like you're going to escape from execution with the help from somebody in the game.
I don't see what there is to complain about! :goodjob:

What do you think, Luke? Do you think this tradition is old? Or worth preserving?

As for me, I think it's still a good intro. It gives you an insight into how a country is doing. You see beyond the surface that the leaders of a country portray, and into the realm of what is wrong.

Haha, that sounds like an excerpt from a famous speech or something.

has anyone consider you start there cause it means you wouldn't have any items and what not, if start somewhere else your gonna be kinda, "I'm a giant nord, why am I wearing nothing but comoon clothes?" prison kinda gives itself a reason for you not to be geared up. Tell me one way it could be that you start with little, other than being knocked out and having your stuff stolen cause I think of many ways to debunk that. Of course I don't like the prison, but that's the only way its gotta makes sense.

I'd prefer we start out in the prison and be lead to the town square for our execution...

We need to let Bethesda know how we feel about this subject.

Would you be kind enough to add an I don't care option? Seems that I'm not the only one that doesn't care one way or the other that we start in prison.

I think Bethesda knows what they are doing on this one and I will definitely like it. They could start my guy in a puddle of mud and I'd still like the game.

Well then, you must be an argonian, right?

As for starting in prison, I don't really care. Didn't Todd say it actually started with you being led to your execution though?

Is this a troll? The boat in morrowind was a grand total of 5 minutes. The prison in Oblivion was like 15, more if you were taking your time / clueless.

The prison starts have been the best of any game I've played personally. How many other RPGs do you magically go from being a farmer to the strongest guy around over night? Thats pretty lame in my book.

I think he meant the repetitiveness of the prison. Sure, it's just 15 minutes, but you stop caring about old Uriel after a while :P

In Skyrim, there is no need for a starting dungeon, because there are no more classes. You escape your execution and you are on your own. I think it would take about 5-10 minutes to go through the sequence.

Yep.

In the Elder Scrolls universe, the Path Of The Hero begins in some form of prison. That's just the way it is?. :D

That's why you get a save game before exiting the tutorial and can change race/gender/skills/attributes.
