Your activities while roleplaying (beside quests)

Post » Sat Nov 13, 2010 10:27 pm

So I want to know what you do in Oblivion beside Quests? There seems to be a lot, but in the moment Im lacking of ideas. I cant think of much else than collecting mushrooms and exploring dungeons. Yet I know there has to be more.

So, what do you do while you roleplay in Oblivion? I ask this especially because I am planning on creating a Character that lives on the Shivering Isles and I dont know what to do there beside Main Quest once I have explored the biggest parts of it.

For example, if you find a village, you talk to the people and then what (if there isnt any quest or you did it already)? I just cant find anything more to do and just leave it.

Has your character some kind of day shedule, what he does and so on? E.g. does your character go into a special tavern each evening? If so, what does he do there? I tried it and I just opened inventory, drank something, waited 1 hour and then left again because it was boring.

I often find myself lost ingame. I dont want to do a quest because I want to leave them for later and then I dont know what to do.

So if you have any ideas or advice, everything is welcome.

Thanks in Advance.

It depends on the character of course. I have only had one character for the last year and half or so. Buffy can spend tons of time doing things that range from the mundane to pretty exciting.

- Redecorating her house.

- Feeding apples and carrots to her horse.

- Traveling. She loves traveling Cyrodiil by horse. Since she travels so much, she often couriers stuff for her guild of mages between the guilds and the University.

- Discovering new things on her map.

- Keeping those pesky ghosts out of the chapel undercrofts. Especially when it comes to her own beloved Chapel of Mara.

- Clearing random dungeons - she is voracious about that.

- Visiting friends, all over Cyrodiil. Catching up on all the gossip. She is quite the pvssyrbox.

- Clothes shopping and bargain hunting.

- Talking about mudcrabs of course.

- Hunting. A girl's gotta eat.

- Camping, with her portable campsite items.

- Helping soldiers or Black Horse Couriers who run into trouble on the road. Often, the soldiers return the favor for her when she gets attacked while traveling.

- Keeping her journal updated. She spends a ton of time detailing her activities and adventures.

- Some of her hours are spent with 'overhead' of course doing those boring things we all have to do. I mean she bathes, eats, drinks, sleeps and all that stuff as she needs to.

- Playing in every waterfall she finds. She has 9 of them mapped out.

She is a mystic archer. She gets plenty of bow practice, but often spends some time before bed practicing her spells and stay proficient in magic.
She rarely does quests, actually. In about 550 hours, maybe she has done 10% of the quests. After all, elves live a very, very long time. What is the rush? When she does do a quest, her imagination runs wild and she turns it into a huge production; I guess she really wants to get her septims' worth from each one.

There is no clear guide to tell what to do besides questing and dungeon diving.

I had one character who got off stealing peoples crap(never anything they'd really miss) and lay it out in her home. The getting off on that part added a laugh factor, which made it more fun.
And another who planted other peoples clothes in married couples houses, sure the NPCs never reacted, but it was fun imagining that I ruined their marriages.

So when it comes to Roleplaying, Imagine things to bypass any limitations. Sure you can't talk to NPCs about much, but with imagination,You can have good conversations with them.
And of course PC users get mods, which increase roleplay, but console players still can easily roleplay well enough to not be at a major disadvantage.

1. Go to local "dive" inn
2. Drink lots and lots of mead and cheap wine (steal it off the tables if your sneaky enough)
3. Pick a fight with someone you don't like the look of--use your speechcraft to get their disposition down to zero.
4. Punch them in the face
5. Defend yourself and your honor until you get "bounced" (but avoid killing anyone, unless absolutely necessary)
6. Go to jail where you will lose stats an self-respect.
7. Wait until 12:01 the next day to start over, repeat as necessary.

But, enough about my personal life . . .

If you don't have mods (like myself) you can:
Hunt-its very fun, when you try and do it with just a bow and arrow, and not racing after them if they're spooked
Re-decorate
Make a trip to the chapel
Practice magic
One of my chars who lived in that abandoned fort outside of Bravil, had a schedule
1.Bathe
2.Goto the Wayshrine
3.Eat
4.Hunt&Gather
5.Talk to that one Argonian guy whose name escapes me
6.Head into town
7.Sell meat
8.Head to the tavern
9.Enjoy the town
10.Return home
11.Sleep

I was just wondering for all of you guys who like to role play what makes it fun. I mean i like Immersion and all but i don know i i would like actually act like its my real life. What makes Role-playing fun though. i dont object to it ive just never really tried it other than one assassin character who i would actually pick targets and follow them around learning their schedule. What makes role playing rewarding?

Eh, for me it's because I'll never actually get to live in Tamriel, role-playing is the next best thing, I suppose

Likewise, I try to play a character with a personality and mind completely different than my own.

The basic word someone here mentioned: Imagination.

The game will never make it so it appears u r actually living it out, despite the so called Realism mods. Yet 'acting like' brings it close enough, like stealing and misplacing personal things, assassinating specific racial types or classes.

My favourtie character was a 'fragile' female shadow assassin. her backstory was some grudge against the violent invasions of the empire/tyranny, specifically against her now gone hometown, so she focused on nobles and imperial legions.

Whenever she assassinated one of these she'd leave a flower or a bouquet, as some sort of signature. And if the target was someone she thought critical in the support of the Imperial order, she'd soultrap him in a gem and keep it for eternal torture.

Now none of these have actual in-game implications: No one in the empire connects the dots about guards mysteriously assassinated and having a flower left behind, nor do the 'souls' acutally suffer anything in those soulgems. But it leaves lives in my character's world if u want.

After witnessing the horror at Kvatch, my character spends most of his time eating and drinking while betting in the Arena.

Camarilla spends every last Septim on buying new clothes and armors, so a lot of time goes by shopping and trying out combinations of her outfits to find the best ones. She then models it for the Fighters Guild whenever there's a good opportunity and location as she is now contractually obligated to do.

She swims a lot too, whenever she finds a lake actually. She's not too fond of swimming in Lake Rumare after she found out about Slaughterfish, though =/

She also spends a lot of time decorating the house with stuff she finds on her travels. It's not always neat, but there sure is a lot of stuff. She has a book pile by the fireplace, and tries to read all the books she finds on her trips, which also takes some time.

Then, of course, there are the benders her, Methredhel and Armand go on whenever she's at home, and also some socializing with her other neighbors on the Waterfront.

Sometimes she'll pack some travel clothes and a light sword and just go exploring the countryside. Soooo much to see.

All these things happen between quests as everything needs to be updated and mended before she goes on the road again. All in all I'd say 25% of her time is spent on actual quests and other progress related adventuring. The rest is me playing house and exploring =)

Well since this is my first Oblivion character everything is brand new to me. I probably wouldn't be doing so much on the side if I had already played it through and was playing with a different character. It helps that I know her personality from extensive role playing over the past 15 years =)

Must be a long day if he lives in Cheydinhal and has to walk all the way across Cyrodiil to Chorrol every morning lol. Must be loaded if he has his own house in Cheydinhal.

Being an Assassin is always fun :)

I pick out random NPCs as targets for contract hits, each hit is worth around 1k gold to start, but as I become a professional assassin they will eventually get up to 10k+ gold each.
Once I find the person I usually do the following.
- Find out there schedule
Once I know when to strike, it's time to make my plan.
- Make sure there are no passing guards that will spot my suspicious activities.
- Break into their house before hand, and get used to the layout and find out where the valuables are placed.
I need to spend as little time in his/her house, so it's good to know where everything is before hand.
- Figure out my escape route.
Once I have everything sorted out, I leave the city/town and sneak back in without any guards or witnesses spotting me. (I use TIE for secret entrances)
If someone sees me, they'll eventually have to be taken out if guards start to question me.
-Leave an hourglass next to the victim :)
Also never re-load just because you were caught, by going to prison you learn from your mistakes.

Your imagination is key.

I just dupe an item and sell it. I just pretend that who ever I sell it to is the person I get my contracts from.

That's one awesome idea there, Vandal. I have thought about creatively murdering someone, but in the end I just sneak attack the poor fella in the closest house when I feel like killing. Might give that a try one day.
