Your Best/Worst Sequels

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:08 pm

With all of the talk lately about how games have been dumbed down or just lack quality compared to their predecessors, I thought it'd be interesting to see which sequels have met or exceeded your expectations and which have failed to deliver. As always, be mindful of others' opinions. You may disagree with them, but do so respectfully.

Best - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

They returned to a top-down view, added a number of items and mechanics that would become series staples, and introduced the Light/Dark World concept. I don't really have to go into detail, but it's probably one of the greatest turnarounds in gaming history. I almost listed Super Metroid for similar reasons.

Worst - Final Fantasy XII

There are only two numbered Final Fantasy games that I can say I dislike, and this is one of 'em. From the MMO-esque ADB battle system to the character progression via License Board to the story and characters themselves, it's just not what I look for in a JRPG. Its few redeeming qualities were level and enemy design, and a pretty presentation in general (which is expected from a game so late in the PS2's life). I'd even consider XIII (which, for all of its faults, I enjoyed greatly) to be a step in the right direction.

If they can manage to replicate XII's exploration in XIII-2 like they say they are, then I think we'll be in for a treat. Not to mention Versus XIII on the way, which looks to be a great next step for the series.

Agreed to some extent, though I'd go so far as to say every CoD after CoD 2, which was my favorite :).

My best sequel for awhile was Uncharted 2 (improved on the first in pretty much every way), though Crysis 2 may have given it a run for its money.

The Best sequel, thats a tough one as most of the sequels that I've seen have paled in comparasion to it's Predecessor. I'll try to come up with a couple that I've played.

Star Ocean Till the end of Time was pretty good and better then the two previous Star Oceans.

Saint's Row 2 was better then it's sequel. You could fly an Airplane and had a much higher ability to customize your character.

Final Fantasy XII was excellent and had the best battle system in the series. FFX has the next best battle system although that was a turn based system and those games are easy to play if you are able to master them.

The Worst Sequels, I could write a book on them.

Mass Effect 2* It's a ridiculously good game but it has a worser story then it's predecssor and lost a lot of RPG elements that made ME1 great. Although ME1's system wasn't perfect 150 items max was kinda old but no exp after you kill an enemy in ME2 WTF and no random items really. I put an Astericks because while ME2 is a great game I have problems with it so that's why it's on my list. Also PLANET SCANNING was the worst feature that they put in ME2. I hated doing that with a passion and I had to do it for my Renegade character or else I'll look like the Terminator. Which isn't bad but I like having the characters face that I originally made.

Final Fantasy X-2, This game gets me angry when I think about it. I liked Yuna and I loved her outfit in X-2, Square-Enix completely destroyed the battle system. The ATB type battle system is garbage, the turn based that FFX had was fine I don't know why they didn't change it. Also having 5 chapters, No Blitzball, etc.

Final Fantasy XIII, This game pales in comparasion to it's predecessor Final Fantasy XII. The Voice acting was pretty good, I thought Alli Hillis did a good job with Lightning but the Battle System was horrible, and the Linearness my goodness even FF X wasn't that linear at least I could backtrack. I hope FFXIII-2 isn't like XIII because if it is I'll wait for the price to drop before getting it.

Dragon Age 2, easily the worst sequel in the history of Video Games that I've ever played. The story was ok but my goodness they destroyed it with a more streamlined product. The Battle system was improved a little bit from Origins but Bioware decided to take a side ways turn with the series and make it a hack and slash with minimal Tactics game instead of taking the fine things that made Origins great and improve on those things.

KOTOR 2, I love Star Wars and when I heard about a Star Wars RPG I'm like   . The 1st KOTOR was pretty good Bioware did an amazing job with it and had a really good story but Obsidian took over in KOTOR2 and they butchered it. The Story is horrible it's like ok I choose Dark or Light at the beginning instead of at the end of the game like KOTOR. I liked having random items in KOTOR2 but Obsidian man I like those guys but they killed KOTOR 2 plus the story was horrible.

Fable 3, I may change my mind and swap this with DA2 as the worst but at least I enjoyed DA2 to some extent. Fable 3 was horrible the only good thing about that game was the graphics. Peter should scrap the current Fable playbook and go with something completely new for Fable 4 well that's if there is a Fable 4.

Did you mean X-II? (Actually I can't comment here, haven't played X-2 or XII)

I'm not sure on best sequel, but Timesplitters 2 improved so much from 1 and it was pretty awesome to boot.(Though I missed spaceways)

I can never choose favourites. Fallout 3 would svck as a sequel, seeing how it's worse written, less engaging, incredibly unbalanced, offers less replay value, and only modding saves it. Still, I like the game itself.

Here's what I consider the best sequels I've experienced:

Heroes of Might and Magic III (which gets even better with the expansions)
Thief II: The Metal Age
Soulcalibur III (this one is more personal; it was unbalanced and lacked online play, but since I never did that kind of thing, it didn't bother me)

Now for the worst:

Home Alone 3 and 4
Three Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain
The Neverending Story 3

Edit: Hmm, seems like my best are all games and the worst are all movies. I think that's because I find that my biggest sequel game letdowns I were still decent games in their own right, just not at the level of their predecessors. And I'm not including terrible expansions like Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods.

Afraid not. In fact, I liked X-2 more than XII solely for the combat and the return of the Job system. The story was awful and I ignore it completely when it comes to Final Fantasy X, but the battles made for a surprisingly good time.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

Oh hey there's a good contender too.

I'll also add Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals because it is great.

It's just a game by the same company. Minor allusions to taking place in the same world aside, you could as well say that Fallout 3 is a sequel to Oblivion. Not that SotC would be a bad game, of course. I don't know why I even felt the need to state this. Or don't delete it. Babbling again.

Good Sequel: Suikoden 2. Improved on the original, which was already good, in basically every way without losing any of what made the first great. Basically, exactly what a sequel should be and rarely is. Frequently hits best RPG lists, and for good reason.

Bad Sequel: Suikoden 4. Oh my god what happened, seriously. Did half the development team and their budget crash in the Andes or something? Suikoden 4 could have been much better, but has the strongest stink of "unfinished" that I've ever experienced in a game. And I've played KotOR 2.

They blew the entire budget on that lovely running animation for the main character (I wish I had a video but I couldn't find one).

Deus Ex Invisible War

That would be a good candidate. Awful approach on the developer's side - which they in hindsight apologised for, completely dropping everything that made the first game different from others of its kind, bad design decisions, downscaled on every level.

Best: System Shock 2
Worst: Fable II

The former is a grand game, and a very good sequel to System Shock. The Latter is an alright game, but completely failed to capture the magic of its predecessor.

Let's see... From what I've played, I'd call Command and Conquer: Red Alert my favorite sequel. And yes, it's a sequel (prequel, actually). Also, I found GTA: Vice City to be an excellent improvement over both GTAIII and the top-down games of old (though don't get me wrong - I loved GTA2 as well).

As for the worst... The final LucasArts version of Monkey Island (Escape From Monkey Island) felt like it was phoned in, and the transition to 3D was ill-timed, losing most of the series' charm. And Super Mario Bros 2. Nuff said.

Technically that last one is a Mario game by name alone.
