Your Biggest "Facepalm" Moments

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:51 am

Anyone have any good stories of when a situation didn't quite work out as you expected? Or just plain had something ironic happen?

I have a few:

The very first Master lock I went to unlock after leveling up the perk didn't require me moving the pick AT ALL. The default position was exactly where it needed to be to unlock.

The very first mini-nuke I fired in the game was at the Mirelurk Queen in the quest to retake the castle. I dropped mines and took up position...launched...and...dud. Only dud I've experienced in the game too. (Though I'm not actually shooting the thing all that often.)

I forgot that I had switched my grenades over to Artillery Smoke Grenades. Tossed one, realized what I did, and continued fighting. Didn't have my radio on, so I forgot all about it in the chaos. You can guess what happened next...

I have a minigun with the Explosive legendary trait on my current playthrough.

More than once I've fired at something point blank, or clipped the railing or wall I was standing next to. I also have Explosive Expert to double the damage and radius.

Yeah. Not a good idea at all. Whrrrrrrrrrr-BOOM-dead

Then there was clearing Libertalia in power armor, getting right to the point of being about to reach the barge with the lift up to the overturned tanker, and.... SPLOOSH into the water I misstep. That was a long walk back to shore, followed by walking all the way through Libertalia again.

Watching the trailers about the new cover system in FO4. Day one tried using cover behind a car in Concord, we all know how that turned out.

I can't tell you how many tin can chimes I dodge around before I realized you could disarm and scrap them.

More times than I can count.. Oh crap!! Blue Smoke!!!! RUUUUUUUNNNNN!

edit: did this during the crazy battle where I was supposed to guard the synth while he reprogrammed Liberty Prime. I just stood there for a little bit looking at the blue smoke rising up from the bottom of the gantry I was standing on. Had to reload that one.

When I realized you could scrap most weapons and armor at the workstations. I don't know how many things I dropped on the ground to scrap in Sanctuary. I have a huge fortress in Sanctuary (did I mention that it is huge?) and my settlement use percentage bar is only at about 20%. I thought that was normal!

Also, I was in a power armor at a dock, I tried to walk onto a boat and I fell into the water 20 feet down and couldn't get it back out.

Kept getting wiped out by an assualtron when in the parents house of "kid in the fridge"....tried placing pulse mine and frag mine to help, when the parents set them off, killing one and turning hostile the other, which added together with that d@mned robot proceeded to kick my butt once more.....

also the first time my companion used a grenade which I wasn't expecting...LOL

I was shooting at a raider from what seemed to be a distance of about 10 feet, but I was just not doing any damage. I must have taken 10 or so shots at him. I zoomed out of my character a bit and noticed this bulletproof glass telephone booth cover was right in front of me and I didn't even notice.

Any snipers like me, crouch and take position at the edge of a freeway ramp or building ledge? On XB1, you hold your breath with the same control that inches you forward to your death.

If it's a long fall, you have time to blame yourself, the awkward UI, and also wish you had a more recent save.

I know that one, lol. Have lost count how often I've been in crouch mode sniping something, and suddenly find I'm falling off a bridge or building. I know what's causing it but I still do it.

Found a legendary crippling shotgun. Thought to myself, "Sweet! I'll give it to my companion for some crowd control." Load Piper up with the gun, some ammo, and a couple of grenades because why not? I'd just picked up the Inspirational perk.

Run off towards the nearest enemy hear the shotgun ring out and... Vault Boy hobbling along on crutches pops up at the corner of my screen. Both legs. Broken.

But, hey, at least I'm still at full health thanks to that perk point. xD

My biggest facepalm moment is Sturges not being able to hack a novice terminal or pick a novice lock at Concord, but then being the only one having the skills to make heads or tails of Virgil's scribble.

Another one, which I kind of expected, since this is a Bethesda game and me being a veteran since Morrowind is the "You're with the minutemen, right" or "you have a dangerous look about you, hope you aren't here for me".

Go to melee bash something and end up dropping a bottle cap mine on us instead.

I was running between settlements when I heard a voice behind me that went something like

"I hope you don't expect me to strip off, I'm not that easy"

I thought about it for a moment, zoomed out and realised I was in my underwear having just sold the clothes that I was wearing at the merchant.

Hope you don't expect me to take my kit of too. I'm not that easy.

Yeah, Cait actually likes that. Hancock as well.

Spending a hour in workshop mode working on 3 different settlements, only to have my game crash and undo EVERYTHING because I was too busy tinkering to remember to save during the process.

That just happened. I was tempted to throw my controller across the room.

I was doing a quest when I entered a building (loading screen) and a super mutant was right beside me as soon as I entered. I start shooting and he waks off and through a door that leads outside again. I run after him and go through the door (loading screen) and am back outside. We fire at each other but he walks back inside and I follow (loading screen) and I kill him.

It took much more time watching the loading screens than actually killing the super mutant!

Just happened right now! Saw a group of super mutants so I decided to try and take them out at once, sneaked and threw a molotov towards them. Or so I thought, there was this little wall next to me and the cocktail decided to hit the very edge of it!

Instant death before I knew what happened.

Blargh, now to walk all the way back to Diamond City.

There wasn't one to load, unfortunately. The most recent save of any kind was from before I started. Oh well.

I have another little bone to pick with the UI. It manifests as the PC looking like a dork, so it is on-topic.

I have maybe 10 play-throughs in FO3 on XBox, so my brain has dibs on the right bumper to initiate VATS. I have done my best to retrain to the FO4 UI, but at least once an hour, the following happens:

1) The PC sneaks up, quietly lines up a shot.

2) I start VATS

3) A hush falls over the room. Then the PC ...

... screams and swings a sniper rifle in midair at no one. And no one seems to notice the scream or the whiff, either.

4) Apparently I started VATS for the wrong game, yet again.
